I would check out his films for curiosity's sake, but they seem to fill a similar niche to Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes (only sometimes with drag), and I've never seen those movies either.

TEMPTATION looks hilarious but most of all i love the implication of the title "Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor," which is that tyler perry is tempted by the confessions of a marriage counselor. it reads like a tabloid headline.

The fact that ads for this are running endlessly on RuPaul's Drag Race seems...apt. (Also, apparently Perry and Ru are neighbors in the Hollywood Hills.)

i do have this memory of describing tyler perry to a white liberal friend of a friend years ago -- i think right when diary came out on film, and getting this look of 'who are you and why are you telling me about this strange thing of no interest to me.'

How true is the assertion that Tyler Perry was the only guy making Classy Black Films for the last 8 years? I can't think of many, but then I don't do Classy by and large :)

i mean if the Madea movies are 'classy' then the bar is low enough that it'd be pretty easy to name lots of classy black movies

A lot of the reviews seemed to suggest that one of most perplexing things about them was that they were Serious and About The State of Black Middle-Class Life, and had this cartoonish drag act with a completely different tone dropped on top (and I think in some of the later ones existing in a completely separate track from a lot of the film) - but again I haven't really seen any.

I don't think anyone believes Tyler Perry movies to be Classy. I can't think of anyone making black Chamber Dramas besides him tho. To my shame, the only black "American" movie of the last decade I can think of that isn't an Eddie Murphy joint is Dreamgirls

and yeah you have to criticize him with some understanding of the tradition he's working in and i think a fair amount of people were clueless or didn't want to bother, so threw up their hands.

but the approach of the article is so weird, by focusing on race-as-such.

The real problem is that this punch never had to be pulled and you could have ALWAYS objected to TP movies on content grounds. A companion issue (and I don't know critics' faces...) is the lack of authoritative urban voice in criticism

The article mentions Just Wright and Jumping The Broom and there's The Perfect Holiday too - but yeah I think there's an element of "He makes terrible movies but he is a machine, and he gives a lot of good actors solid leading roles that Hollywood won't"

Like, people reference AV Club or Pfork or whatever (in our generation) and Rolling Stone etc in the older generation. No one cites The Source or BET or Essence in marketing except in a sea of other posi reviews

As a consumer and someone who feels himself reasonably aware of the artistic process I would contest the roles in Tyler Perry movies as being particularly meaty or valuable to culture as a whole but yeah it's p great that he has whole casts of aa actors who aren't playing gangsters or criminals.

i haven't really gotten the sense that anyone's been holding their tongue on Tyler Perry since his 3rd or 4th blockbuster -- it's been open season for like 5 years

before that there was kind of a confusion/unawareness about his success or an assumption that he was a flash in the pan who'd soon fall back into a smaller niche level of popularity

When I was a kid, church felt like a Tyler Perry stage play. There was some really good singing bracketed by pious repetition. Church always seemed like a re-run I was trapped in. They told me the same thing every week. The same woman got the Holy Spirit every single week. The same gossipy, hat wearing nosy bitches violated Matthew 7:1. The deacons passed around the collection plate and the preacher’s wardrobe got fancier and his garage got fuller. They gave us grape juice and matzoh and said it was de Lawd.

the dvd trailer for Good Deeds features the same shot of him half-smiling at a restaurant table twice

he's so bad in alex cross but honestly i wish every director who likes to think he's an actor was forced to play the lead in a generic action cop movie - i would see every one

though assuming the movies in question are helmed by action hacks, not the directors starring

SPOILER at the end of Cross, he's seated watching a skype of Jean Reno being arrested in some unnamed Latin American country, and he says something to the screen (even though Reno has dropped his phone pre-handcuffs) like "you have taken a life and now I have destroyed yours." Honestly, I don't know how any actor could pull that off. Also calls someone a "maggot" twice.

at first I was excited that Craig Robinson had gotten his own movie made. and then I saw Tyler Perry's name and I was not excited anymore. should I be ashamed.

apparently Perry only contributed money and had nothing to do with the script or direction

as such, it seems to be a much more benign vehicle than the avg Tyler Perry movie

I read the AV Club review this morning which basically said "this is a harmless, formulaic comedy, which by default makes it far and away the best movie ever made attached to Tyler Perry's name"
