I rarely wear the leather coat and jackets I already have. Leather plus fur means this coat would have to be cleaned by a furrier. Just because I'm getting a nice-sized tax refund doesn't mean I should spend it. At the store this weekend I did admire several women in fur-trimmed coats, but they were old enough to be my mother.

the wispy trim is going to get matted, dirty, and caught in everything.

Lauren: Excellent point.
am0n: *smirk* (although I would probably get the coat in red or black)
― j.lu, Monday, 28 January 2008 15:26 (eighteen years ago)
that IS a good point lauren. but it is kind of a hot coat
― Surmounter, Monday, 28 January 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)
Because it's...hideous?
― Laurel, Monday, 28 January 2008 15:42 (eighteen years ago)
I thought there was something kind of funky about it. But I live in NW Washington, D.C.; no one here does "funky." I should just give up and start saving my money to buy a Volvo.
― j.lu, Monday, 28 January 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)
the 1st thing i thought was grimace.jpg too
― jhøshea, Monday, 28 January 2008 15:48 (eighteen years ago)
but srsly that coat is fucking horrible dont get it
I'm sure there are lots of funky options that will be less annoying than a coat that's too expensive to clean and will wear badly (in the fringe)!!

this is true
Even if its appealing to you in a funky way you'll grow tired of it quickly. Funky is not something you want to spend a lot of cash on.

Is this from Spiegel?
― wanko ergo sum, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:02 (eighteen years ago)
It does have a Eurotrash vibe a la Spiegel...tacky Russian mistress?
― Laurel, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:03 (eighteen years ago)
that coat somehow seems perfect for NW DC
― Mr. Que, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:04 (eighteen years ago)
it's not funky though it's a hideous purple disaster
― Mr. Que, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:05 (eighteen years ago)
To me it says "funky high-style black woman who doesn't own any shoes with less than 4" heels, and whose hair is permed to the same consistency as the fringe and cut short in a wedge, the better to show off her dangly, artsy earrings." So if that's you, then you have my blessing!!
― Laurel, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:07 (eighteen years ago)
To me it says, "Fuck it, I give up, I'm joining the circus."
― Mr. Que, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:07 (eighteen years ago)
"I'm wearing my pimp's fur coat"
― StanM, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:09 (eighteen years ago)
the fringe is passable I think... it's the vast plain of blah suede that ruins it.
― wanko ergo sum, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:09 (eighteen years ago)
the fringe is still kinda lol Michael Stipe

YES! Do not get coat. It reminds me of a shaggy dog.
― ENBB, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)
Is this poodle fur
― mh, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:16 (eighteen years ago)
tacky Russian mistress?
Ah-HAH! That's why it appealed to me despite my better reasoning--I still haven't resolved my secret wish to be a flashy trophy wife. And those of you who have met me know that I'm not terribly likely to achieve that goal. Thanks, all!
It's curly lamb--one-half step up from rabbit fur in tackiness.
― j.lu, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)
laurel: "black women dress like THIS"
― am0n, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:24 (eighteen years ago)
ugly as shit.
― Lolpez, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
Did someone mention Prince yet? Or Roy Wood from Wizzard?
― snoball, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)
Actually that last post was a bit unhelpful. What I mean is that buying this coat isn't a good idea, because of the combination of a) it's expensive, and b) you're not going to be able to wear it in a lot of situations - unless you're Bootsy Collins or Noel Fielding.
― snoball, Monday, 28 January 2008 17:01 (eighteen years ago)
Everything's different in the world of Noel Fielding.
― Laurel, Monday, 28 January 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)
Or even if you're Noel Collins! http://bp3.blogger.com/_AzT5pruwnbg/RsSyeeUwhVI/AAAAAAAAB38/mHVgE-i74Pg/s400/juilet8.jpg

i feel bad we all dissed the coat so bad.
heres what i do when i want something i suspect might be a bad idea to buy for money/maintenance/practical etc reasons: wait a week and if im still thinking about wanting it a week later i go ahead and get it. 9 out of 10 times i'll forget about the thing until much later or I turn off the whole idea. Either way im relieved i didnt spend the cash.

My wife needs you as a life coach.
― Rock Hardy, Monday, 28 January 2008 17:10 (eighteen years ago)
it looks like i need a vocab coach. maybe we can swap services.
― sunny successor, Monday, 28 January 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)
I really can't imagine desiring to spend my tax refund on that, but hey...
― emilys., Monday, 28 January 2008 22:52 (eighteen years ago)
The SPCF (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Fraggles) counsels j.lu to forego this purchase.
― Michael White, Monday, 28 January 2008 23:29 (eighteen years ago)
I was going to say it looked like something from The Great Gonzo's wardrobe. Note to self: bad idea to GIS "gonzo"
― snoball, Monday, 28 January 2008 23:37 (eighteen years ago)
Unless you are attempting to augment your Macy Gray costume, I suggest to not buy this.
Also, it is, effectively, February. Rain will be in the forecast for the next three to four months, followed by three months of the Potomac Dank Stank. That coat lends itself to neither of these.
Take the tax refund and purchase other funky, yet more easily mixed and matched, items.
The time to buy a coat like that is September.

― Abbott, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 00:38 (eighteen years ago)
Oh dammit I didn't mean to submit that.
― Abbott, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 00:39 (eighteen years ago)
you will regret this lapse in judgment if you buy the coat
i see these coats around all the time though but that don't make it right
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 01:58 (eighteen years ago)
last fall someone gave my mom a crazy srsly crazy coat like this one but huuge and with even more fur and shoulderpads and obv from the 80s - i don't know why they gave it to her, maybe they thought she needed something warm and comical. anyway, it came to be hers - and she wore it as part of a wookie costume for halloween. apparently it was both frightening and awesome. at christmas time i saw the coat and we all took turns trying it on. it made me bounce up and down like this guy: http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/2729993.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF1934A2752006EF5F0EDC8362B69F986F9B05A5397277B4DC33E which is pretty fun to do so i guess this could be an entertaining coat
