Er, that's 7. and 8.
Kylie Minogue, in the UK.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 09:10 (eighteen years ago)
But she had "Where the Wild Roses Grow" and "Confide in Me" in the 90s, didn't she?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 09:11 (eighteen years ago)
Nobody bought those!
(This is pretty much everyone who was popular or cool in the 80s except maybe The Smiths and Sonic Youth and REM, isn't it?)
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 09:12 (eighteen years ago)
(Yes I am aware I nixxed Kylie and then mentioned Sonic Youth but its all relative levels of popularity innit?)
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 09:15 (eighteen years ago)
Er, according to Wikipedia "Confide in Me" was number 2 and "Where the Wild Roses Grow" number 11 on the British charts.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 09:16 (eighteen years ago)
Also, Kylie Minogue was number 4 on the UK album chart.

Okay Tuomas my point is that there was still a significant dip in Kylie's popularity in the 90s, especially by the time of that 1997 album.
Anyway:

'The Red Shoes' was 1993.

yes, and?
― blueski, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:10 (eighteen years ago)
it's just 'less popular' as opposed to 'not popular' i guess, as with Kylie
― blueski, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:12 (eighteen years ago)
Soulja Boy
― Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:13 (eighteen years ago)
I think The Red Shoes actually did better in the charts than Aerial.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:18 (eighteen years ago)
And certainly Aerial didn't have a hit song like "Rubberband Girl" was in 1993. So it oculd be said that among non-fans like me, Kate Bush was more popular in the 90s than in the 00s.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:22 (eighteen years ago)
dude stop, you are wrong
― blueski, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:24 (eighteen years ago)
'king of the mountain' was a #2 hit, probably only sold as many as 'rubberband girl' and the albums they were from probably sold around the same too in the end.
maybe it's all based on the fact that indie bands weren't covering her songs then like they are now.
― blueski, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:27 (eighteen years ago)
sorry make that #4 hit. now ONWARDS.
12 Kate Bush Rubberband Girl Sep 1993 4 Kate Bush King Of The Mountain Nov 2005
I think that's that "argument" settled.
Kylie was extremely popular in the first half of the nineties.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:27 (eighteen years ago)
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you (blueski) in the main part. (But then I would contend that distinctions like 80s and 90s aren't necessarily split on the basis of being 198* or 199*)
― aldo, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:31 (eighteen years ago)
Considering the number the singles sold today, it could easily be that "Rubberband Girl" actually sold more copies than "The King of the Mountain". Also, according to Wikipedia The Red Shoes sold more than 3 million copies worlwide. I can't find the current sales for Aerial (according to Wikipedia it sold 1,1 million worlwide during the first five months after its release), but I doubt they're much higher than the 3 million of the previous album.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:48 (eighteen years ago)
I wonder if Kylie will have a #1 in the 10s (as in next decade). Re-issue of 'Word Is Out' perhaps.
― blueski, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:50 (eighteen years ago)
tuomas you don't need to keep quoting wikipedia as if we're somehow not aware or capable of doing it ourselves.
also bear in mind people couldn't download albums for free 15 years ago.
― blueski, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:52 (eighteen years ago)
I think downloads are now counted as sales, are they not?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:53 (eighteen years ago)
what, even the huge number of illegal ones? enough already!
― blueski, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:54 (eighteen years ago)
I guess you're right, my point was just that I can't see any obvious jump in popularity between The Red Shoes and Aerial.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:55 (eighteen years ago)
She's certainly more name-dropped/credible in the 00s than the 90s though.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:57 (eighteen years ago)
I think most of the people who bought Aerial were long-time Kate Bush fans, most of whom probably bought The Red Shoes as well. I doubt she gained a much bigger new audience in the 00s.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 12:59 (eighteen years ago)
