i think cls were my brand, rather rich but not overbearing. and about the equal of marlboro in terms of consistency. how does it taste now? more chemically? i don't smoke anymore:|

tremendoid, Saturday, 15 March 2008 07:51 (sixteen years ago) link

how does it taste now? more chemically?

Yeah, like you said, they used to be rich, but not overbearing. Now they taste like cardboard. In other words, just like any other bargain or non-premier brand. Most of the allure of Camels (and Camel Lights) was their distinct taste. Not having ever really researched Turkish tobacco, I can't speak to their authenicity in that regard, but at least Camels were distinct in their own way. Now it's just another plain ol' cigarette that tastes just like every generic brand I could save $1 or more per pack on.

Nice move, RJ Reynolds!

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 15 March 2008 07:58 (sixteen years ago) link

i hated that generic marlboro taste at first (i forget what my first brand was, winston i think) but umpteen lazy days having to smoke what everyone else was smoking drummed that unambiguous marlboro fix into me after a while. winstons was occasionally very good but their quality control was ass, truly bad batches on the regular

There's a couple of old men who cycle around with carrier bags on their handle bars picking up old fag ends around where I live, they must be doing something similar.

i've been being camels for a while, and i kind of like the new pack, even tho the old pack is so great. haven't really noticed a huge taste difference. but yea it does have more of that marlboro taste. still tastes like a Camel though.

i've been smoking their turkish silvers for the last few years, which haven't changed. they don't sell them everywhere, though. even though i'm a long time smoker, i'm tempted to choose the 5th option..

kamel red lights? hmm, they don't really taste like camels. kind of like a more aromatic parliament light? i don't know if that's a good description

Surmounter, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 00:14 (sixteen years ago) link

this most recent pack I can definitely notice the flavor difference. Quite unpleasant tbh. I suppose I'll just have to start getting up a little earlier on the days when I'm short so I can get American Spirits on the way to work. That or just cut back to a pack a week and buy them on Saturday. Ugh, so complicated, having taste.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 00:49 (sixteen years ago) link

i just got a pack of camel lights, and i'm somewhat nervous about it. i mean, if i'm gonna be doing a pack a week, maybe i'll just switch to dunhills.

ILX System, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Camel Lights were my brand for years but I've been smoking American Spirits for a while now. Had to buy CL again at the weekend and really noticed a difference in taste. Gross.

ENBB, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:13 (sixteen years ago) link

the new ones enbb? even so i feel like i notice a slight difference but not nearly enough to change brands, are you sure its not the american spirits vs the lights?? camel lights are really popular around here & a lot of ppl are like "AAACK THEY CHANGED THEM BLURH BLURH BLURH" which kind of confounds me.

deeznuts, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, the CLs I got were the new ones. You're right though, I'm sure some of the difference was down to the fact that I've been smoking American Spirits. I don't think the difference was so marked that I'd switch if I still smoked them though.

ENBB, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:26 (sixteen years ago) link

I wound up with a soft pack of the old school last weekend and then bought a new hard pack this week. I've not been smoking much this week. Because they taste like ass.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:30 (sixteen years ago) link

i smoke the wides when i can, i dunno if that has anything to do with it. i remember a similar thing happening w/ turkish golds years ago when those were the cool cig, i & everyone else switched to lights then. i think to change the packaging/superficial appearance of a cigarette-smokers cigarette speaks to desperation & also that thats probably reflected on the smoker; i dunno how much of this is psychological & how much is an attempt to gain market thru tangible changes.

deeznuts, Thursday, 20 March 2008 00:34 (sixteen years ago) link

ahahahahahaha the results

i'm disappointed.

Surmounter, Thursday, 20 March 2008 01:30 (sixteen years ago) link

surmounter otm but if i was going to do just a pack a week i would do this cigarette i saw that was all-black w/ czarist double-eagled emblem embossed in gold on it. now that is class.

deeznuts, Thursday, 20 March 2008 01:32 (sixteen years ago) link

i smoked way too many of these and now everything probably tastes better but goddamn if these lucky strikes don't taste like kissing someone

strgn, Thursday, 20 March 2008 06:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, if I only smoked a pack a week or so, I'd definitely splurge on something nice like Dunhills. Smoking those is like drinking a milkshake. But because I smoke so much, Camels it is (usually because of the 2-pack specials that used to be buy-one-get-one-free, but are now just buy-one-get-$x.xx-off-the-2nd-pack).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 March 2008 06:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Uh how widespread are these new Camel 'Narurals' (with 100% organic tobacoo, no additives, etc etc)? Cuz I've been smoking these pretty regularly for the last 6 months, instead of my usual Marlboro mediums.

can those be bought in any regular gas station convenience store or do you have to order them specially? ill totally buy them if theyre really as good
as advertised & to make it financially necessary to cut down on my smoking.

wondering the same thing about lucky strikes, which ive def seen but have never ordered, & havent looked for in awhile now.

deeznuts, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:11 (sixteen years ago) link

You know, since I'm already shelling out extra money for American Spirits and trying to cut back while doing so, maybe I should just start smoking Nat Sherman Fantasia Lights. They can't be that much more.

I thought they discontinued the filtered Lucky Strikes, which were typically a dollar more per pack than Camels in NYC. Or are you talking about the unfiltereds?

my only problem with off/expensive brands like dunhills and nat shermans is that they often sit on the shelves for too long and get stale

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link

nat sherms are tasty, but i always end up grabbing gayish colors like purple or pink when i bum.

i def did this when smoking w. felicity @ eagle rock

dunhills are only a buck or buck fifty more than camel lights in chicago. and if you're going to be paying $8.50 or 9 bucks for camel lights you might as well pay 10 bucks for the dunhills.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:32 (sixteen years ago) link

The Nat Sherman store in NY is awesome and I'm sure those are fresh. I'll have to make a point of going in there next time I'm in NY.

but agreed in principal

deeznuts, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:34 (sixteen years ago) link

we stopped to gas up the van somewhere just east of texarkana where the camel lights cost less than the dr. pepper and cup of coffee i bought. it was insane and i probably should have stocked up.

ive had has low as 3.56 for camel lights at specific discount stores. i was in chicago this summer & bought some myself & some girl cigs & i dont remember them being ridiculously expensive

deeznuts, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:37 (sixteen years ago) link

tombot, in the last two years they've raised the city tax, county tax (twice), and state tax on cigarettes. plus they just raised the sales tax again in cook county, it's now at an even 10%.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know if I could afford to smoke if I didn't live in the south. $9 for a pack of Camel Lights? I pay about $3 here, and the B1G1F deals are usually about $4.50.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Camels were like $2.50/pack in Mississippi when I was there last spring.

the tax increases only apply to cigarettes, not to tobacco so a pouch of drum is only like three bucks and lasts way longer.

How much do rolling machines and other supplies cost? I've never been good at rolling anything by hand.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't really roll anything by hand although I'm much better at it now than I used to be.

In college I purchased one of the following as a gag but secretly kind of loved it.
