Clocky?

calstars, Monday, 26 August 2024 18:29 (two months ago) link

Clocky?

― calstars

oh um. how do i explain this.

to "clock" someone, as a verb, is to look at someone and say "oh, i do believe that person is a transgender woman". except the word dates back to probably at least the 1950s, and in the 1950s, that's not would people would generally say. they'd generally do a double-take and shout "THAT'S A MAN!" "Clocking" is largely dependent on the observer and not on the observed, but in some cases, the appearance or behavior of the observed can have an effect on the number of people who "clock" them, and these people are referred to as "clocky".

it's a complicated term these days. trans women on twitter/x use it a lot. i do personally use the term, but i also, in certain contexts, refer to myself as a "tranny faggot". in other words, "clock" and "clocky" are problematic terms to use, even for a trans woman like myself. i avoid using the term in largely-trans places online, but since this isn't a largely-trans place...

it's largely a transfem term, that i can tell. idk, it's kinda interesting. trans guys tend to get read as "dykes" but the cultural significance of "dyke" is kinda different than that of "faggot". there can definitely be a stigma to it but it's not the _same_ sort of stigma. i had some hesitation about whether or not i could call myself a "dyke", but i had a lot more hesitation about calling myself a "faggot".

this is... this is just wild speculation here, but what i do see, anecdotally, is that it's more common for someone who's transmasc to come out as queer and accept themselves as queer earlier than it is for someone who's transfem to come out as queer pre-transition. it was really important to me, early on, that people not look at me and think i was a gay man. it's not that important to me now, probably in large part because nobody actually does that. being an effeminate man is just way more stigmatized than being a masculine woman is.

and this is where we get to the topic of this thread. gender presentation is not nearly as clear-cut as people seem to think it is. i did have a habit of trying to "clock" people early on, just because it made me feel less isolated, more visible as a trans woman. and what i found was that i wound up doing what a lot of people trying to "clock" women do - i came to false conclusions due to my cultural biases. that lady has a deep voice. that lady is six feet tall. literally i know cis women who get "clocked" as trans more often than i do. that's not a humblebrag, that's me talking about the deeply problematic way "clocking" winds up policing "acceptable" ways of performing womanhood. it's almost like a sort of transvestigation-lite.

but it's important to trans women because it does matter if we pass. trans women get treated better if we pass than if we don't, and a lot of us do value passing very much. so in trans women, i'd say "clocking" does serve that sort of purpose - critically evaluating other trans women to try and increase our own ability to "pass" in a society that often treats non-"passing" trans women very poorly.

pre-transition, i was strongly implicitly encouraged to try and determine someone's gender as soon as possible. i needed to do this so i could figure out if i wanted to fuck them. i don't really understand it. i don't know where i picked up that idea, but i did. i didn't want to fuck _anybody_. even if i say, well, maybe it's about relationships, a lot of the time i did this i was happily in a monogamous relationship. it was just something that felt _necessary_.

maybe there's a bit of that in my clocking trans women. i'm attracted to all kinds of people but particularly to trans women. these days i just... i just don't care about someone's gender. i look at someone and i don't make that determination of gender first. i just notice if i find someone attractive, i don't think about whether i'm _allowed_ to find them attractive. someone i used to know had a meme they loved a lot about someone going up to a trans woman and saying "damn yo ass fat, what's your pronouns?" and to me, that speaks to the same thing, that if people are attracted to me, i'd like them to be attracted to me first and worry about my gender later. a lot of people, when dating, pay a lot of attention to genitals, and when it comes to me personally, i find a lot of that attention undue.

and when i think about the difference in the thread - is this a cis man, or a lesbian? - to me, there's this common implicit assumption of, well, these are people it's not "acceptable" for a cishet man to be sexually attracted to. particularly when you specify _old_ lesbians.

and i'm not a cishet man. i'm a middle-aged woman. i'm attracted to older women, particularly older queer woman. i hope someday to be an old lesbian, and here's this thread full of pictures of men who supposedly look like me?

anyway, circling back around to the notion of kevin shields looking like a trans woman ("clocky" or otherwise) - there is this inherent stigma of, you know, dude looks like a lady. to my understanding, "dude looks like a lady" _isn't_ about a transgender woman, but an effeminate-looking cisgender man. a man who, perhaps, looks like an old lesbian.

it does come down to that for me. i look at that picture of kevin shields, or an earlier picture of matt smith, and in both cases my response is "she's hot. i'd get with her. him. whatever."

-

i guess if i had to boil it down to one complaint it would be this: speaking as a lesbian, a lot of you people have _terrible taste in lesbians_. in fact, i will now tell you which people in this thread post-cut i am attracted to in a lesbian way, based on their pictures

dwight yoakam
craig kilborn
donald j trump jr (look i'm not saying i _don't_ have terrible taste in lesbians.)
the goo goo doll with the neck tat (oh my god those guns, girrrl i want to watch you chop wood)
beck

that's it. those are the only ones.

well, sort of. i do find macaulay culkin in that picture attractive but he doesn't look like a lesbian in that picture. he looks like a burnout hipster nerd dude. i'm attracted to those guys in an entirely different way from the way i'm attracted to lesbians.

Interesting because "to clock" just means to see or notice in UK slang and I would have sworn it was specifically English (probably Cockney) but it seems it was first cited in the US in the 40s. However I've never heard anyone use it in that sense in US film or TV whereas you hear a lot in the UK (specifically again in films or TV programmes set in London).

― Andy the Grasshopper

to be clear i am not roasting the goo goo dolls in any way shape or form. not even spit-roasting. i'm body-positive and don't believe in shaming people for their bodies in any way, shape, or form. i still remember the amount of shit pete burns got for the surgery he had. shaming a femme for having surgery to make his body more feminine? yeah, that hasn't aged well. i haven't heard the goo goo dolls' music in, i don't know, 20 years or so, i don't know anything about them as a band. i find the guy with the neck tat physically attractive.

budo jeru, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 01:45 (two months ago) link

I always thought this was a “cringe” thread tbh … because it presupposes what an “old lesbian” looks like. Unless the “old” refers to historical figures who were known to be lesbians… but … there isn’t just one look. Idk my great great aunt that we used to take to Lyon’s restaurant and have Montecristo sandwiches near the Prunedale shopping center in the 80s was a lesbian. She looked like Estelle Getty as Sofia in the Golden Girls… but Sofia wasn’t a lesbian… just a little old white lady … so …
