My soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend took fairy-loving walrus-face woman to prom.

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

So I never did promenade.

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Do they have "prom" or its equiv. outside the United States?

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes.

jim, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:00 (sixteen years ago) link

i got drunk at my friends place instead.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to a Christian school that didn't allow dancing (or swimming in the same pool with the opposite sex). We had an awful "banquet", which me and my friend totally ditched about halfway through, leaving our girlfriends behind.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:03 (sixteen years ago) link

LOL christians

i think i went to see the queers at the rat?

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:04 (sixteen years ago) link

My school had an "american-style" prom at the end of sixth form. Me and my lightweight buddies got so pissed at our little pre-party that we turned up too late and wrecked to get in. There was a good house party afterwards though.

Bodrick III, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:06 (sixteen years ago) link

my friends mom ran a limo company so she hooked us up with one and we just rolled around hollywood getting drunk.

I went to 4 PROMS.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:09 (sixteen years ago) link

The only reason I didn't go to four is because the girl who asked me to go my freshman year had a racist father.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Holy shit elmo.

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Our prom was for 5 smaller local schools and included both juniors and seniors. I went to the prom as a sophomore because I was dating a junior girl (lol); as I junior I had my lesbian friend escort my boyfriend. I don't recall my senior prom very well, I don't think I had a date.

I even attended prom one year after I graduated; one of my closest high-school friends, who was a year younger, asked me to attend with her.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to two proms. The second one pretty much ended with my prom date and me drinking Miller Lite in someone's backseat behind Denny's.

Of all things to miss in your teen years, missing your prom really isn't as big of a deal as you think it's going to be.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I took elmo's date to prom (rip)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:23 (sixteen years ago) link

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Apparently this thread is for me but I am not sure about the social expectations required for my participation. For example, what sort of attire is appropriate for this thread and should I bring a corsage?

Aimless, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:31 (sixteen years ago) link

the only thing I still recall with true fondness about all my prom attendance was going bowling all dressed up, in lieu of dinner

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

uhhhhhh i thought this was the thread for people who attended 0 proms

La Lechera, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah.

jaymc, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Our non-prom-going superiority at reading comprehension again makes itself felt!

Aimless, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link

while they were off fornicating we were learning to read.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

actually i was off getting drunk and high as balls in kenmore square.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:39 (sixteen years ago) link

so for those of you who did NOT attend prom (not even someone else's -- no proms at all) why didn't you go?

me: i didn't have a boyfriend, no one asked me, sure as hell not interested in going alone and watching people slow dance to eric clapton. went to olive garden with bff and watched movies at her house.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh my god "Wonderful Tonight" is the fucking funniest song in the world.

It's time to go home now
I've got an aching head,
So I give her the car keys
And she helps me to bed.

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

oh - i went to my g/f's with her two years after i skpped out on mine. i took "prom" to mean "your shitty high school's prom".

Here's what the date stealer is up to today:

This year will be University of Idaho's junior Jill A1man’s second year performing in the show.

“I have really loved it on the basis of having a great community to go to,” Aiman said. “It’s the sort of environment that a lot of women don’t get to experience until they go to college.”

This year, Aiman will perform the piece, “Reclaiming Cunt.”

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link

that was some pointless google proofing.

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:51 (sixteen years ago) link

CURRENT PROJECT:

What I plan to do is read books by women such as Audre Lorde, Chrystos, Gloria Anzaldua, Carolyn Forche, and Sonia Sanchez.

PLAN FOR THE NEXT TWO MONTHS:

I’d like to write a piece of non-fiction about my experience as a woman based off my readings. I want to write in epistolary form, because it is a form I have become more familiar with recently.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:55 (sixteen years ago) link

J1ll A1man, who has been a friend of Duke for four years, said Duke has a lot of soul. “Milo is just a dude with an acoustic guitar who likes to rock,” A1man said.

jaymc, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh my god motherjumping Mil0 Duke was such a fucking meanie to me in high school.

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:58 (sixteen years ago) link

libcrypt, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 21:00 (sixteen years ago) link

“I wish I could play more, and live off beer and Co-op food,” Duke said. “The difficult thing about John’s Alley is I would get there and not play for an hour or so, and so I once got drunk and sloppy with my fingers when I did go on. So I have to remember to keep the drinking in moderation.”

“I play covers and depressing love songs or anti-love songs,” Duke said.

He was in a band called ORACLE HOUSE.

Abbott, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link

He was soon-to-be-ex because he took 'reclaiming cunt' to thee prom (which he thought was The Man or whatevs until she talked him into it) and not his girlfriend of 1.5 years (me).

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link

senior prom: we were at jer's first?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to a "freshman formal" with someone. There was another girl who had a crush on me, (and vice-versa) but amidst the confused social worlds taking place at the time, I was slightly oblivious (or maybe just plain shy) to have been properly cognizant regarding any of that. We respectively ended up going out with some duddish consolation prizes (yeah, that sounds harsh, but, whatevah). Actually, it was a fun evening. Riding in a limousine with friends; eating what at the time seemed like a positively decadent dinner...classic innocent 14-year old John Hughes-worthy stuff.

I think I spent junior prom night literally wandering around "the mall" with a similarly disaffected friend of mine. On senior prom night I hung out with my girlfriend at the time, who was a year ahead of me, and who was taking a year off before going to college. Given our respective temperaments and so forth, I think it would have put us through all manner of unnecessary manner of torture to have brung her to the prom experience. I definitely have no regrets whatsoever. Wull, maybe I should have asked the crushy girl to the thing when I was in the ninth grade, but, hey, it's important to have some mediocrity scattered among one's formative experiences... I'm thinking, anyway...

dell, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link

An ex of mine didnt go to his prom (in Mtl) because, in classic and sad Ducky from Pretty in Pink stylee, some chick told him she'd take him, he got all awed and hyped for it, and she bailed on him and went with someone else. So ;_;

LAST CALL, JORDIN SPARKS, OR I'LL ASK NATASHA.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I didn't go to prom because the girl I had crushed on for months (years? jeeeezus) turned me down on someone's front porch at a party and went with a good friend of mine instead. I decided to show everyone in the world how traumatizing it was by not going. Turns out nobody really noticed. I'm pretty sure I ended up playing playstation by myself all night, and I'm 100% sure I went through a whole bag of Doritos. Pathetic.

Z S, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to my prom but only because my boyfriend at the time lived in DE and it was a good excuse for him to come and visit for a long weekend. I didn't dance to a single song and we sat outside smoking the whole time. The limo driver confiscated our alcohol and made us hide it in some park. Prom sucked but I did have sex for the first time that weekend so it wasn't all bad.

ENBB, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:47 (sixteen years ago) link

xp to Z S ^^ that's what i'm talkin bout

we need more video games, soggy pasta and doritos

La Lechera, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Abbott, I also thought you meant that you and your current beau were splitting up and I was all alarmed. I'm glad that's not the case.

ENBB, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:48 (sixteen years ago) link

The limo driver confiscated our alcohol and made us hide it in some park.

whaaaaa? First of all, what kind of asshole limo driver confiscates alcohol on PROM NIGHT from kids that aren't driving, and secondly, why did he make you hide it in a park? Why not throw it away, or better yet, take it home and drink it himself/herself?

Z S, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:49 (sixteen years ago) link

http://www.fakenews.net/update/i/1997_05_10_b.jpg

note to self: Drop out of school. Become limo driver. Confiscate prom alcohol and drink it at home.

Z S, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link

HA! I KNOW!! He searched our bags and made the park pit stop on the way to the venue becuase he said they'd search the limo but that we could get it afterwards. Of course, he later changed his mind and said we couldn't. I'm pretty sure he just went back and stole it while we were inside not dancing.

ENBB, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:53 (sixteen years ago) link

The limo driver confiscated our alcohol

i and many friends shared this experience-- it's just a way for the limo companies to make sure that in no way can john's dad sue them after john drinks all night during prom and then falls off a balcony at a hotel after party

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:54 (sixteen years ago) link

it's bullshit when you are 17 and drinking like there is no tomorrow with no worries about who is going to drive and if your parents are going to catch you when you come home, but it's pretty sticky for the companies/hotels/schools

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:55 (sixteen years ago) link

When I was in high school (1968-1972), despite the many helpful hints from the sitcoms of the day about how one was supposed to go about it, the thought of dating was hopelessly off-putting for me. I stayed as far from it as I was able.

Communal dating was not popular then. I was without a vehicle or the means to borrow one. I was broke as a joke most of the time. If there had seemed to be much of a chance to score some sex out of the proposition, I might have leaped over these obstacles with alacrity, but alas that outcome was not one with a prayer of a chance, at least not without some serious preliminary effort.

For me, not going to the prom was just the logical culmination of 4 years of not dating whatsoever.

Come to think, I never really did 'date' my girlfriends at any time in my life. Yet somehow I managed to lose my virginity, marry and not ruin my life. I still wonder at how I pulled this off.

Aimless, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 01:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Having gone to school in aus the drinking age here is 18 and by prom time (or "formal night" as we call it) a lot of the year 12 kids are 18 so, they had a legal bar at my formal. You had to show ID to buy a drink but how fucking stupid, everyone just bought drinks for everyone else!

Oh and also, we could smoke in the ballroom! Days before smoke bans even in restaurants, which seems so weird now. I smoked some kind of wanky slim cigs, and shocked everyone because they'd all assumed I was some nicey mousey do-gooder but I turned up in a wicked black gothy dress and mega-high black stilettos and drank and smoked and bitched about everyone else.

And then left early.

Uh, we had a Sixth Form Leavers Ball which is more or less the same thing... bunch of people in tuxes in a hotel function rooms. No date, however was molested by girl whose name I didn't know. Then proceeded to get me and my friend exceedingly drunk on rum shots and was very glad the thing ended early because I would have passed out on the dancefloor otherwise.

Why wouldn't it be feasible? I went to my 10th a couple of years ago. Basically, the organizers got in touch with people by simple six-degrees networking: contact all the people you're still in touch with, they'll contact the people they're in touch with, etc. And then obviously MySpace and Facebook help with the rest.

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Unless you're saying 800 people is too many to organize a reunion for, but even with all that networking, we still had only about 1/6 of our graduating class turn up.

No prom, due to all girls boarding school. There were girls who had boyfriends, but not in the area (or if they were in the area, they weren't supposed to be dating them.)
there are TWO adult proms out here in the happy valley. One is GLBT, naturally (straights allowed), and the other is brand new for anyone who didn't go the first time, or hated it, or just wants to go to an adult prom. I don't really get the second one - I think the guy who is sponsoring it has a lot of friends and just wanted to throw a semi-formal party in a private room and play lots of '80's music. (because all proms forever after have to have lots of '80's music?)

Also, I remember being in charge of the prom junior year - (some student council thing) - so I planned something on campus (it was a senior prom), and the seniors didn't want to have it on campus so they had their own prom at the Marriot and had their parents pay for it and so this fun d.j. came to campus and it was just a bunch of girls dressed up like Cyndi Lauper (probably 12 of us, at most) dancing around.
it was awesome ! So maybe I did go to a prom of my own designing....

Also, I get very annoyed when people say "Are you going to prom?" because it neds a modifier. (I mean, i'm not annoyed at ABBOTT or anything, it's more like when did THE prom become "going to prom, what are you wearing to prom.") I'm really uptight in weird ways.
Are you going to formal dance? No I'm going to THE formal dance. it's really stupid and probably comes from some deep seated resentment that started at all girls boarding school.
