Do you like to draw? I like to draw. Let's draw!
― Oilyrags, Thursday, 8 May 2008 17:27 (eighteen years ago)
After reading on Stuart Immanoneneoenonen's site a few days ago that he likes to ink with Pentel color brushes, I got one, and it's really cool. Much better than the Steadler Pigment Liner B that I used to use for simulated brush action.

I want to get a great big scanner, like tabloid size, so I can draw bigger and still scan it easily.
I want to see some of your pics, Mr. Rags!

If I actually HAD a scanner, I'd update a lot more.

I think you should post some draws too, Abbott (and lurkers.)

Here's what I did at "The Draw" DJ sketch night in Downtown LA last night:

I am sooo out of practice in life drawing but it was soooo fun.
― felicity, Thursday, 8 May 2008 19:40 (eighteen years ago)
Also, what materials do you use? I use a 2B, sometimes HB pencil and Strathmore pad.
― felicity, Thursday, 8 May 2008 19:41 (eighteen years ago)
Most of my life drawing happens on the bus. There's a Dr. Sketchy thing once a month, though, and I'm thinking of checking it out.
I nearly always have two or three hand-sized sketchbooks with me in my man-bag. I like the moleskine plains, the Miquelrius graph-paper, and just recently got a kind of horse-hide bound one that doesn't have a manufacturer's stamp. Lately for pencils I've been using a 2h mechanical pencil or a 6b wooden pencil. I also have a papermate 'tough stuff' eraser stick for working negatively. Lastly, I gotta chunk of soft charcoal that I've been carrying around for ages, but I'm scared to unwrap it 'cause of the mess. I talked a little about my inking tools upstairs, although I misspelled 'Staedler.'
― Oilyrags, Thursday, 8 May 2008 19:49 (eighteen years ago)
I went to a Dr. Sketchy thing on Saturday. It was fun, and three of the short sketches I made weren't totally shaming. I'll scan and post them on my drawblog after work.
I also drew the sickest thing I've ever made, called "Freudian Nightmare" which I will post on my blog and in the monster manual livejournal community. It is not safe. Not safe for work, not safe for home, not safe for school, not safe for pregnant or nursing women, not safe for men age 25 and older, not safe for children, just plain NOT SAFE. I am simultaneously repelled and delighted by it.
― Oilyrags, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:55 (eighteen years ago)
Cool, I alway wanted to go to Dr. Sketchy when I lived in Brooklyn. I did not know they had Dr. Sketchy's in other cities including L.A. Thanks!
The Draw is happening again this Wednesday, too. If I make it, I'll put more sketches up.
― felicity, Monday, 19 May 2008 18:38 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, they're like the McDonald's of burlesque themed live-drawing nights at places with a liquor liscense now.

I think the one with the fan was 10 minutes and the other two were 15 minutes. Drawn fairly large (11"x17" pretty much) so I had to scan 'em in pieces and stitch 'em together in PS.

The first is like Dan Lacey. kind of.
― Abbott, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

Freak me out they do!
― not_goodwin, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 01:13 (eighteen years ago)
Wow, so many cool draws posted overnight!
I love "I want to eat this bone" and "thumbprinty outline of a squid or something maybe" and "various animals riding bikes" especially.

I love drawing!!!
― ken c, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 12:34 (eighteen years ago)
I was at the student bookstore at lunchtime, and I saw a brand of pen filled with correction fluid I haven't seen before. A good way to apply white marks is my Holy Grail of drawing tools, so I got it. It sucks, just like all the others I've found.
Anybody know a good way to do this?

Oh yeah - I forgot to post this horror earlier. It's NSFW, as I said. I don't know if I reached the heights (?) of asian-shitting-cumming-dicknipples.jpg, but if you click, I think you'll agree I gave it my best shot.

Kerm + Abbott == King + Queen of ILX drawers.
― libcrypt, Friday, 23 May 2008 04:49 (eighteen years ago)
OTM they's awesome!
― wilter, Friday, 23 May 2008 04:51 (eighteen years ago)
Are those last two you posted finished, Kerm? They look kinda work-in-progressy, with the inconsistent use of tone and so on.
― Oilyrags, Friday, 23 May 2008 12:33 (eighteen years ago)
(And I should have mentioned that it is indeed very fine work.)
― Oilyrags, Friday, 23 May 2008 12:42 (eighteen years ago)
Hey, you've identified my signature style!
They're doodles, about as finished as they'll probably ever be. I'm working harder on standalone finished pieces that aren't smudged to death and aren't drawn on surplus tractor feed printer paper.
Also, thanks everybody. You'll only encourage me.
― Kerm, Friday, 23 May 2008 12:47 (eighteen years ago)
I'm the same, most of my work is found on lined office paper. If I try to re implement the ideas onto finished higher standard paper I always lose something in the translation.
― Ste, Friday, 23 May 2008 12:59 (eighteen years ago)
Just wow, Kerm. Are you using this talent in any professional way?
― Autumn Almanac, Friday, 23 May 2008 23:48 (eighteen years ago)
(not to undermine everyone else's efforts in this thread; it's all tremendous work)

Mr Jelly Roll.
Started as just for fun, but my friend Jeff liked it so much it's going to be his birthday present as soon as I remember to frame it.
― Oilyrags, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 00:08 (eighteen years ago)
the shading around the right eye should prob. be darker.
Some excellent stuff on this thread.

This Sunday afternoon I will attend my third meeting of the Austin Sketch Group. It turns out that Sam Hurt of Eyebeam and Peaches, Queen of the Universe is a regular. This is very exciting to me, although it probably means nothing to anyone else in the entire universe.
