what if...

are you a what-if? person?

i'm really bad about it. it seems like i'm always asking myself what could possibly go wrong. like What if i completely screw-up my presentation for work? or What if i'm getting arthritis in my hands because I crack my knuckles too much? or What if one day i just lose my voice like what happened to Linda Thompson?

it's tiring. does this happen to anyone?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

no, i just assume all these bad things are going to happen and prepare accordingly

sunny successor, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

what if i reply to this thread and say something stupid?

jhøshea, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

I tend to not think about my future and dwell entirely too much on things I've screwed up in the past

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

awesome trick if you can pull it off

blueski, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

which is probly more thought than anybody has dedicated to trayce's relationships

and what, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

damn dude

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 May 2008 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

anyway, i try not not to do this, it really isn't worth the mental anguish, and i find that usually when i think of "what if..." situations they never happen, so now i usually rule things out if i happen to think of them, which probably is a dumb strategy but it's what i go with nowadays

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 May 2008 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

I feel horrible about that shit but it's just one of 10,000,000 failures to choose from

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

now that JW is on the IR we see E "and what" P stepping up impressively to fill the role of american non-funny Passantino

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

"non-funny Passantino" redundant ;)

it's all good xpost lol @ "no midtown"

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

I have no idea what happened here and should probably not walk into the middle of it, but I do not need to "what if" when I can just assume that any terrible consequences of the action in question are an absolute certainty and not bother with any action ever

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 08:49 (eighteen years ago)

Hah Crut didnt fuck nothin up, my life was on a fast train to smashytown anyway at that point, I think its big lols ppl think there's some kind of drama, so y'all can stop whispering behind yer damn hands about it, we dont care so why should anyone else?

one year passes...

What if I saved all the salt and crumbs from the bottom of the bag of pretzels, like, in a jar?

bamcquern, Sunday, 4 April 2010 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

What do you think would happen?

Maybe I'd salt my food with it. My food would be the most savory food.

bamcquern, Sunday, 4 April 2010 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe it would blow up.

my full government name (WmC), Sunday, 4 April 2010 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

That sounds unlikely, but I won't turn down your thought.

bamcquern, Sunday, 4 April 2010 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

It does seem unlikely.

I am a "hope for the best, prepare for the worst" person, and the preparing for the worst necessarily involves a lot of "what if". My wife calls it borrowing trouble, I call it trying to be observant enough to see the pothole before I drive into it.

What if all of what we call "the universe" is contained within a single atom of a still larger "universe", which is itself contained within another universe, etc - and on the other end, what if each atom in our universe contains other universes, and so on, infinitely regressed in both directions?

that would be something

:: suddenly getting a sense of how annoying I must be to live with ::

I was watching an episode of Cosmos (#10, I think) this morning and Carl Sagan was expanding on that very "what if", with bong smoke nearly visible in the background.

Ted. E. Bear, P.I. (Z S), Sunday, 4 April 2010 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

How is your wife supposed to know that you're being cautious? Because you drive like a granny? That's not as annoying as living with someone with ibs or something.

bamcquern, Sunday, 4 April 2010 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

metaphorical potholes
