I got a panini-maker- well, not maker, but 'toaster', or griddle, or something -for my birthday, and have had at least one toasted sandwich-esque construct every day since. I just had a pancetta and brie toasted sandwich for breakfast.
What do you like in a toasted sandwich?

I like toast but I don't like toasted sandwiches, I think you lose something special when you stick one piece of toast on top of another

I am always mocked for ordering what is referred to as a Toasted Bowl Clogger. A toasted sandwich with cheese, ham AND chicken (yes AND) and onion.
But it's sooooooo good.

tuna + sweetcorn, with a bit of mayo mixed in, cheddar grated on top, that's always a winner with a bowl of soup (tomato or veg)

never really understood the brie and cranberry myself but different strokes different folks i guess.
bit of an oddball suggestion this but I would 'recommend' you try nutella and lemon curd. i say 'recommend' because you WILL fuck your panini press with the resultant goo and bring the hate on ilx.

Nick: if you have panettone that's going slightly stale, you can toast it, drizzle with Nutella and honey, some fresh fruit, and ice cream, and have that as a king of sandwiches
― The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:02 (seventeen years ago)
Fuck yeah.
Sadly I have no panettone.
Ramsay did something with strawberries fried in balsamic vinegar with cream & custard on the F Word the other night that looked AMAZING.

I've got a Slater book and like his writing, but have never really seen him on TV. he is boss, though - sweet potato with chili butter is a staple lunch for me at work now.
― Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)
Slater's books are amazing...he has about 10 fucking unbelievable curries.

Marco Pierre-White's tip: cook bacon in the microwave for a couple of minutes. anyone tried this?
― blueski, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)
I saw this last night too, and it looked well cooked to me. I am going to try it, although I don't know what rating of oven was being used. (I know he has previously said he only does tomato sauces in the microwave any more, as the results are so good.)
― aldo, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)
We've got a little plastic tray, kind of like a griddle, for doing bacon in the microwave. It's great, pretty much the only way I cook it now. You can even slice a mushroom or two and cook it on there.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)
problem with sandwich-makers is that you can't just use bread straight from the freezer like i do when i make toast

My dad insists on bacon being done in the microwave nowadays. It seems to work, but I don't eat bacon so I have no idea.
― ailsa, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)
i really dont kno about that. i like my bacon so so crispy
― Surmounter, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)
You can get it crispy in a microwave.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)
Hang on I'll just go and post myself in the "out of context" thread.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)
microwave bacon = fucking ace.
not sure about getting it crispy, though. what's the trick?
― grimly fiendish, Thursday, 10 July 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)
don't cook it in the microwave
― Mr. Que, Thursday, 10 July 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)
It seems to go crispy if you microwave for long enough? I don't usually eat really crispy bacon on sandwiches tho, maybe I'm misremembering.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 10 July 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)
i had no idea everyone was so into this bacon in the microwave thing
― Surmounter, Thursday, 10 July 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
Saves a bit of time in the morning when everybody's trying to get ready for school/work.

also doesn't set my smoke detector alarm off.
― ailsa, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)
got it, yes, smoke alarms are awful sensitive. but i have to tell you, i had bacon today that was done like the regular way, and i was really really into it.

2 Sainsburys Butcher's Choice Cumberland sausages, cooked in the over the night before, and halved lengthways so they cover 1 slice of bread. Smear of sundried tomato paste. Three slices of mature cheddar cheese. Plenty of black pepper. The sandwich toaster in the little workshop / recording room / den thing behind my desk in my office. Fucking awesome.
Portabella mushrooms and brie might be an idea for tomorrow. Tuna and cheese for Thursday.
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 12:22 (seventeen years ago)
With cheese (and ham). My mum used to slatter loads of butter on the outsides. Cardiac arrest for sure but also XLLL EXTREMELY tasty.
I also love toast with nutella.
Inside me hides a fattie.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 12:39 (seventeen years ago)
Parma ham, parmesan, lots of herbs (oregano, basil, Italian herb mix, it's all good). Ordinary white bread. Grilled for ages on low heat so it goes all dry.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 12:43 (seventeen years ago)
Honey, banana, cinnamon, granary bread.
(on a Sunday)
