anyway, it actually depends if the Desplechin film is actullay good (though chances are low that it isnt a good one), while Eastwood will probably win weather he made a good movie or a mediocre one

uhhh... I believe Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is debuting at Cannes. Surely this is the hands-down favorite to win, no?

looks like it's a sort of a Kings and queen sort of a movie yet again, which is great.

Yeah, the Desplechin film is supposed to be good. Will be seeing it in the next few days as it opens wed. I'm willing to bet that no French movies get the Palme d'or. Or if one does, then I hope it's Desplechin and not Garrel whose movies I cannot stand.

Stevie T, i may give Desplechin a look based on that alone. i will actually have a chance to see the Terence Davies at the edinburgh film festival next month. really excited for that and the arthur russell doc.

Holy shit, I want to see this! The Saramago book is one my favourite novels ever.

i can't imagine i'd be excited to see a film of one of my favourite novels. especially not if it was directed by Fernando Meirelles.

I never had much interest in reading the book, since I'm allergic to allegories, but I was excited about the movie since it seemed it could work on a purely showy, suspenseful basis. Then I read the Manohla Dargis pan.

I don't know who he is, to be honest. But I think the book's premise could make for a great film, like a philosophical post-apocalypse movie. Don't know how a movie could capture Saramago's unique narrative tone though.

Dargis was funny on Meirelles ... City of God had "lots of bullets and no brains."

(I actually thot it was a good Dead End Kids movie, nothing more)

I could see Jia Zhangkhe win the Palme. He's a festival favourite everytime by now and his film appears to good from what I've heard.
Another festival favourite who you hear might win every time, the Dardenne bros. who've already won twice in less than ten years (can't remember the exact date when Rosetta won, 1999?) but the one right now is not rumoured to be very good and it'd be awkward to see them win 3 times in 10 years. The Waltz with Bachir movie is apparently quite good. And after last year's cartoon favorite, Persepolis, who knows it might just happen...

yes, i'm really surprised it's not in competition. i wonder why?

any word on the egoyan film? he's one of my favorite filmmakers but his last one got panned so badly it seems like it kind of set back his career

(in fact, it got panned so badly, I never bothered watching it; I did buy the dvd for $3 though, and still haven't watched it)

Laurent Cantet's "Entre Les Murs" won the Palme d'Or as the Cannes Film Festival came to a close tonight in France.

Haven't read a thing about it.

interesting choice. one of the only comedies amongst the doom and gloom.

i think it was the last film screened in competition.

i guess this is the thread where i talk about "the class"? i spent a long time trying to find a suitable thread, and in the process found a note from the good sir dr. morbius in which he said that "the class" was the same-old while "time out" and something else were fresh. and i think that is true. like it was v. good but ultimately kind of dull? even now, i remember nothing.
