sports night is the only thing on here worth watching. i guess a few good men was ok

akm, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

oh wow i was going to post that i would be the only one voting for sports night. it doesn't hold up completely well, but i have a lot of affection for it. i wish felicity huffman got work like that more regularly.

horseshoe, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i might go for sports night. really what i want to vote for is a "greatest hits" of west wing but theres too much dud even in the four seasons sorkin wrote to wholeheartedly go for it

max, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

studio 60 is the worst show

max, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

never seen it, but i'm voting malice, based on the 'god' quote that gets c+p's on here all the time. i don't really like aaron sorkin. he's no dick wolf.

gff, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

A Few Good Men has so many awesome-terrible lines suitable for any occasion.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Sorkin is very good at making me hate actors I like.

HI DERE, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

did everybody hate Charlie Wilson's War? Sure, there was the what's-her-cunt factor, but otherwise I really kind of liked it. Sunset Strip was utter shit.

will, Friday, 23 May 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

Julia Roberts.

Also, Sports Night might've been ok except for the fact that my ex and her two annoying room mates banged on & on about how great it was and couldn't wait for DVD release and omigod it's here. Ugh.

will, Friday, 23 May 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

you forgot about his broadway show 'the farnsworth invention'

tehresa, Friday, 23 May 2008 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

sports night is the only one i've watched & enjoyed, although i bet it hasn't aged well.

Jordan, Friday, 23 May 2008 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

it's aged much, much better than West Wing

milo z, Friday, 23 May 2008 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

Well, considering that West Wing was fucking awful even when it first came out, that's not a huge surprise!

two years pass...

"Again, it was a matter of opportunity: Julia [by that time his wife] was away, and I had a window where I could fly to Vegas on a Friday, get high all night, and then return to L.A. the next day. I'd do this three times a year, and it was amazing I never got caught. I was the worst criminal. I had a four-dollar pipe, and the bowl was made of metal. It showed up on the monitor at Burbank airport and they asked to search my bag." The authorities found a carefully packed bundle of hallucinogenic mushrooms and rock cocaine. "I fainted," Sorkin said. "When I came to, I was in handcuffs. I was lucky--there are guys serving time in prison for doing less than I did."

'studio 60' sucked deep

but i f/w everything else. kinda surprised 'sports night' beat 'the west wing', which is, you know, way better.

Sorkin is a fairly good comp for Paddy Chayefsky; similar entertainer's gifts, similar blowhardiness

I saw the preview for this last night, I will probably watch it but it looks very Studio 60-level awkward.

With one look into the steel arrogance behind Sorkin’s eyes, I am sure he considers his life’s tragedy that, in 50 years, there will be no Sorkin to write about him.

Haven't read article yet. Was basing his crankiness on the first ep of Newsroom, his most personal work.

not the three scenes thing (he might as well embrace his staginess), but making them backstage at the launches of the mac, nextcube, ipod. it doesn't seem to speak to a v interesting take on the idea of jobs tbh

That jobs film was so bad

Hahaha I just looked at the synopsis for molly's game & saw that it's about poker, that's perfect - sadly tho I think not even a bad poker movie will get me out in the cold at 9pm on a weeknight at this point in my life :-(

sonnet by a wite kid, "On Æolian Grief" (wins), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 20:45 (eight years ago)

I vaguely recall watching Sports Night maybe five or six times. It definitely had that sorkiny quality about it, but that's a quality that wears out its welcome in a short time. The Social Network was just about the right length for the sorkiny waters not to rise too high by the end.

Molly's Game opens with five minutes of breathless voice-over, related to the main story tangentially, but mostly there for the sake of a clunky punchline. The best things the rest of the way are the hopelessly crummy poker player (clueless even when he wins) and the space cadet who declares his love for Molly. Passable diversion overall.

I independently had this thought last night! like amongst all the fans of dick wolf shows I know, nobody thinks "this is exactly how the criminal justice system works" or "this is how the criminal justice system should work" and people acknowledge it as a spin on the real world

a lot of Sorkin fans -- and Sorkin himself -- seem to think he's scripting an ideal of how things should go and it's incredibly weird

the Sorkin adap of To Kill a Mockingbird didn't get nominated for the best play Tony, and ever since its huge ads in the NYT have featured praise from... Obama, Bill Clinton, Pelosi, and James Comey.

Malice! So great; so sleazy and trashy and daft, moves like a runaway train. Not quite in the Erotic Thriller genre, hard to say wtf it is. There are about five Oscar winners in it too. All the 20-somethings on Twitter and Letterboxd seem to love it, Sorkin hates it of course it goes without saying.

I've been listening to a podcast go through The Newsroom, and as someone who has consumed a lot of terrible entertainment for irony poisoned reasons I still find it almost unbearable to get through the little excerpts they put in, despite enjoying their takedowns. The combination of a totally clueless vision of what politics and journalism are coupled with this immense self confidence that the material is Important, it's just unbearable.
