because i just recently watched inland empire again, and then last night i saw her in recount doing a great katherine harris.
she's got a weird face, which may be why lynch loves her. it gives her an exaggerated rubbery emotionalism. but man is she gutsy. (thinking citizen ruth as well as inland empire.)
anyway ... laura dern!

My ex's father is a post-op transexual who looks A LOT like Laura Dern. It's totally a shame because any great Dern weirdness is replaced by a completely different and unwelcome weirdness whenever I see her movies now.

Run with it. SOMETIMES, WHEN THE STAKES ARE DOWN, AND WE'RE PUSHED TO THE LIMIT, WE JUST MAY FIND OUT WHAT KIND OF STUFF WE ARE MADE OUT OF. THIS IS THE STORY OF ONE YOUNG MAN, POSTING ON AN INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD, WHO GAVE HIS ALL WHEN PUSH CAME TO SHOVE. THE REST IS CINEMATIC HISTORY. IF YOU LIKE MUPPETS, THEN YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO MISS THE MOST MOVING STORY OF THE DECADE.

it's sort of cartoony, but so is katherine harris. she doesn't make harris seem calculating, exactly -- she doesn't quite understand enough of what's going on to be really calculating -- just totally self-absorbed and self-satisfied. there's a great moment where james baker first sees her on tv and says, with dismay, "who is that?"

I totally didn't even realize this show existed until yesterday when I found out it was one of the only things HBO renewed. Anyone watch it? I just watched all 10 episodes of season 1. It's certainly uneven at the start (the first episode kind of sucks actually) but it improves with almost every episode; it's more like Nurse Jackie than anything else I could compare it to (as in, it's only slightly funny and a lot tragic). Mike White kind of steals every scene he is in.

(sorry, show in question being Enlightened)
Hey, I forgot I started this thread. But my thread title was otm.
Anyway I revived it because I watched the first 2 eps of Enlightened on an airplane flight the other day. Thought it was interesting, sort of promising, I'd like to see more. She's so good at playing unstable, and Mike White is a good match for her as a writer. Anyone else besides akm see any of it?

I have no idea what the consensus is on Inland Empire but it's easily in my top 5 of the 21st Century, and a sizable % of my love/awe is due to Dern's performance.
Also Enlightened is very likely my favorite show of the century thus far for similar reasons.
