yes, yes i do.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

(does anyone really drink them frozen? is frozen even a real margarita? it's like a lime slushy with tequila.)

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

anyway, on the rocks WITH SALT.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

I sure used to. Not as much these days, though.

Oilyrags, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

are there any actually-good storebought mixes? i resort to them out of laziness but most of them are crap.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Some purists insist on drinking it neat and guffaw at a salted rim. But yeah I'm a rocks+salt guy too.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Margaritas roxor. Tequila + tangy fruit is always a winner. I will be having one (w/ tamarind) in approximately 90 minutes.

Mark C, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i like the salt (lightly salted -- some places rly overdo it).

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

"do you just hate hangovers?" thread in t minus 8 hours...

Oilyrags, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

i've had a tamarind-a-rita, at this place. it's good.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

i'm ready for one of these with an avocado salad situation

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Zing Zang makes a good Bloody Mary mix -- I would like to give their Marg mix a try. Making margaritas in small quantities, it's easy enough to avoid mixes.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't really touch hard liquor unless it's in a gin and tonic or a margarita. Really looking forward to sitting outside on a patio with a margarita (rocks, salt) this summer. There's a Guatemalan place not too far from me that makes a good one.

jaymc, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

margaritas are really the greatest patio drink. (preferably with some fresh chips and good salsa kicking around the table.)

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

YES

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

omg Surmounter you reminded me of this Avocado margarita in dallas that that sooooo good. It might not endure for anyone as a fave drink over time but the one I had was awesome.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

are there any actually-good storebought mixes?

Tommy's is pretty good, actually.

Michael White, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

avocado margarita! iiinteresting

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

so on the tequila...does it really matter how good it is? i use plain old jose cuervo because it seems stupid to spend money on good tequila as a mixer.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

I kind of agree. Even with really good mixer, there's so much fruit and sugar covering the liquor it doesn't make THAT much difference. Your hangover will be enhanced, however.

What's the name of the refreshing drink that they drink in Mexico, far more than Margaritas I'm told?

Michael White, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

i know they are kind of foul, but i love using the concentrated frozen bacardi mixers, throwing a banana or something in, and using double the booze. this is about the only thing my blender is used for.

bell_labs, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

m.w. - micheladas?

lauren, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

micheladas A++

elmo argonaut, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Lauren, what are they?

Michael White, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

The worst margarita I've ever had was in Peru, and it's partially my fault, since I didn't stop the waitress when I saw her consulting with a co-worker and paging through a book behind the bar. It tasted like artificial lemon juice with a hint of alcohol.

jaymc, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

awful

artificial lemon juice in general is pretty dire

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

michael, the micheladas i've had are beer + some manner of tomato / clamato juice, lime juice + chili pepper / hot sauce over ice

really really tasty

elmo argonaut, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

i'll be make love to some margaritas before the night is through.

carne asada, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

little margaret

elmo argonaut, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I've had Micheladas - not a big fan, but I've definitely had them. My 'understanding' was that there was was some kind of soda/tequila thing or something along those lines.

I always thought it would be kind of messed up to name three daughters Margaret, Pearl and Daisy, elmo.

Michael White, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

the ones i've had have been tomato/clamato-free, but there are many variations. as elmo says - a++. very refreshing.

lauren, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

tequila mixed with fresh lime juice and topped up with soda is great. if you omit the soda, it's called a crazy eddie (by me, anyway).

lauren, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

Michael, get out of my braine! I was just looking at wikipedia trying to understand how in the world Daisy is considered a form of Margaret.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

Maragarita's auntie, Porkos.

Michael White, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

bell_labs, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

i always think the two people in that song are horrible and incompetent enough to deserve each other, they can't even get infidelity right

elmo argonaut, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

It just makes me think of watery Pina Coladas in some sub-Sandals resort in the off-season.

bell_labs, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

do we need a thread for rum drinks? i have been all about them so far this summer

elmo argonaut, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

There is nothing more disappointing than ordering a margarita and finding it less than perfect.

This thread is making me very unhappy with my cup of tea.

ljubljana, Friday, 30 May 2008 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha

Surmounter, Friday, 30 May 2008 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

Elmo, are most rum drinks sweetish like daiquiris?

ljubljana, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

yes to rum drinks! i prefer dark rum. dark n stormies...mmmm.

bell_labs, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

dark rum + cream soda = holiday drink. this is like my new gospel i tell everyone. it's good.

yes, really addicted the last couple months

who has really good recipes/recs re: which tequila to use?

buzza, Monday, 15 November 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

i use david wondrich's recipe in his book killer cocktails

2 oz. tequila
1 oz. cointreau
1 oz. lime juice

rim the glass with a lemon or lime wedge, roll it in coarse salt and chill. shake the liquids w/ice and strain into a chilled glass. when i make them i make them up but you could strain over fresh rocks too.

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 November 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

for tequila i just use whatever 100% agave blanco is on sale in the store--don't think you need to overthink it for margaritas

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 November 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)

i'm a fiend for mojitos.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 15 November 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)

margaritas and I are going through a whole thing since summer, hope it lasts

honkin' on joey kramer (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 15 November 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

i've been rockinn' the milagro 100% agave silver, cointreau (when i can afford it, shit is pricey), and fresh lime

buzza, Monday, 15 November 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

patron's citronage is kinda nasty but ok if you only use a few drops, but cointreau really is the key to a great marg. imo

buzza, Monday, 15 November 2010 03:13 (fifteen years ago)

totally agree.

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 November 2010 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

btw if i can complain for a sec--i was looking at the menu of some high-end bar/restaurant in cali, their "margarita" was tequila, fresh lime, agave nectar, no salt--they were calling this like a purist margarita. wanted to write them and say 1) that is more properly called a tequila sour and 2) fuck you.

all i want right now is a nice-looking shallow dish with a lid that i could put on my bar and dump a whole bunch of salt in for margaritas. apparently this does not exist.

yeah i generally make them up when it's just cocktail time, but for meals on the rocks makes more sense to me. certainly don't begrudge ppl their frozen drinks but am highly suspicious of the mixes that are used in making them.

For your salt container couldn't you use a sugar dish?

mc souleye (brownie), Thursday, 2 December 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

sugar bowls tend to be smaller and deeper--need something where you can sit the entire rim of the glass in a shallower pool of salt.

i guess it's possible that there are sugar dishes that would work tho!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 2 December 2010 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

oh and all i was saying is that ime blended margs tend to be made with mixes--i haven't encountered many cases of ppl using fresh juice and blending! but that would be cool if it was happening.
