We are tearing ourselves apart.
Twitter is not a "dumb site". Facebook isn't a "dumb site". I've a friend who was diagnosed with PTSD because of all the shit he had to moderate for facebook: decapitations, child-pornography... It's not the sites that are dumb; it's that we've created monsters. We want to say and draw and place photos of everything from nice to vile to criminal and... expect, somehow, these platforms can moderate that. Can moderate "us". People put so much out there, online, who could possibly moderate all that?
There are 19 year olds in Manilla working for Facebook having to press either a 'keep' or 'delete' button, preferably within three to five seconds, deciding on what we can or cannot see on facebook. Can't blame them for making mistakes. We are doing this. Same with twitter. Force-feed our first world shit through a digital medium and eventually someone in the third world will deem it inappropriate. It's how rotten we are.

It's dumb that they exist

Also can someone find me that tweet that was like
You: Actually, Bojack is a gut-wrenching show about depression
Me: Cool
― 5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 17 September 2018 21:40 (five years ago) link
We - 'the west' - outsource our moderation to third world, non-English speaking people, is what I'm trying to say. No way can we expect the biggest online free speech platforms to actually be there for free speech or moderation when needed. We created something but have given it away to underpaid and undereducated people, exploiting them. This is the reality. xxp

What a dumb shite: https://nypost.com/2018/09/14/twitter-ceo-admits-conservative-employees-dont-feel-safe-expressing-opinions/
― nashwan, Monday, 17 September 2018 22:18 (five years ago) link
LBI your argument doesn’t actually hold up, because there is no industry consensus or standard practice on outsourcing moderation work, whether to neural networks, sweatshops in developing countries, or contracted native language speakers. You are right that humans are terrible, because duh, but “the system” is not even close to being as competent as you suggest.
― Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Monday, 17 September 2018 22:34 (five years ago) link
weird how they never seems to say what these opinion conservatives are afraid to express are

Weird how Rosen gives a completely useless interview and recode has no commentary of their own. Tech journalism is so utterly fucking useless
― Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Monday, 17 September 2018 23:27 (five years ago) link
all very disappointing to hear. Rosen has seemed so incisive in his criticism of the media recently
― Dan S, Monday, 17 September 2018 23:35 (five years ago) link
lrb isn't arguing that the system is competent, quite the opposite actually. here's a piece from 2014 on it:

this 'woke brand' thing is pretty tiresome but this got a good laugh out of me
why are so many young people flocking to brands on social media for love, guidance, and attention? I'll tell you why. they're isolated from real communities, working service jobs they hate while barely making ends meat, and are living w/ unchecked personal/mental health problems— Steak-umm (@steak_umm) September 26, 2018

has anyone else noticed far fewer "ICYMIs" and suggested tweets since the latest update? i didn't use any macros, but they've basically disappeared from my feed. which is nice.

Ive been in dozens of bar fights (ask the guys I grew up with) nearly lost an eye in one and that's just one of the injuries (I have the scarred stitch marks to prove the rest) never been black out drunk but I have had to defend myself, which I am still perfectly capable of doing https://t.co/VQSotGWW5g— Charles Gasparino (@CGasparino) October 2, 2018

I haven't been using Twitter lately because it just depresses me, so they keep spamming me with emails saying "You've got 22 new notifications", then you login and you in fact have zero notifications. What is the point of that? I just unsubscribed from the email. Who thought it was a good strategy to just send people lying emails?

BREAKING: Twitter to remove hated "tweeting" functionality from Twitter— Leo Mikłasz (@leomiklasz) October 29, 2018

if you want to RT you should have to copy the tweet then paste it into your own tweet

does this mean i have to add all the tweets i like to my bookmarks instead or else lose track of them
― ciderpress, Monday, 29 October 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link
I think overall for most users it's a useless tool altho I do really like it as a bookmark

Lots of things they *should"* do to make it more functional, they don't want to do any these things for whatever reason, it's getting almost as bad as facebook

they don't want to make things more functional they want to get their house in order for a sale that is never gonna come because what mature enterprise would want to hang that albatross around their neck?
― I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Monday, 29 October 2018 16:08 (five years ago) link
imo in this era if there's no way to silently register some kind of engagement with the content on it the social media website will die probably
which

that "we've removed the hated tweet function" thing is too real. I don't get this at all. the fav (rip) / like button is elemental to twitter.
― flappy bird, Monday, 29 October 2018 16:54 (five years ago) link
all we can do here is FP and it works okay

why is the favorite an essential feature?
― k3vin k., Monday, 29 October 2018 17:00 (five years ago) link
it lets you communicate "yeah" to the tweeter without burdening them with reading your words
― I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Monday, 29 October 2018 17:02 (five years ago) link
it allows u to tell ppl their tweet is your fave
― lag∞n, Monday, 29 October 2018 17:02 (five years ago) link
it also imo motivates people to tweet more
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 29 October 2018 17:05 (five years ago) link
the vast majority of twitter users have small follow counts and don't get replies. without the reassurance that somebody is reading (and enjoying) your ramblings, you're more likely to stop talking or go somewhere else

― flappy bird, Monday, 29 October 2018 17:12 (five years ago) link
i think we can all agree that the feature they shd eliminate is tweets themselves
― lag∞n, Monday, 29 October 2018 17:14 (five years ago) link
I’d be cool with getting rid of both likes and retweets lol
― k3vin k., Monday, 29 October 2018 17:18 (five years ago) link

perhaps, but I’d guess that the twitter overlords have data on this that suggests otherwise or else they wouldn’t consider doing this
twitter is a cesspool tbh anything that encourages engagement and conversation rather than mindless liking and retweeting is fine by me
― k3vin k., Monday, 29 October 2018 17:20 (five years ago) link
you can retweet but you actually should have to say something
