Downsize yo'self

space issues and (admittedly lessening) landlord worries, meant that i decided to downsize my record and cd pile at the weekend. ie - i took the bulk of it back to my parents house. i am left with one box of records (about 40-50), and about 50 cds. my room feels really odd now, a lot less cluttered thats for sure (it was beginning to overflow). i now seem only to have aphex, suede, piano magic and boc cds, and rave 12"s.

I tried downszing my books the other day, and I managed to get rid of a grand total of 5. And two of them were Michael Crichton (though I kept Jurassic Park). I'm not actually sure where I got them in the first place.

The last time I moved house I downsized my, admittedly stupid and useless, magazine collection. I threw away three bin bag fulls and moved several into work. I was still left with over 200. It's a problem. I should deal with it.

I was going to get rid of some stuff the other day (books etc.) but instead I ended up just moving them to another part of my room. They are now in a precarious position.

i am trying to downsize and have succeeded in getting a large pile of clothes and shoes together for charity shops, but the last time i tried to downsize my books i came up with 6 titles, 2 of which my boyfriend promptly bagged back off me becuase they had pictures in that he wanted to use for compilation tape covers! i ARSK you.

records/cds went home, but i got rid of 2 books, alan sillitoe and garrison keiller. i got rid of them because they were by alan sillitoe and garrison keiller. not to save space

i unpacked a load of comics that have been in the "attic" since I moved in last october and put them on bookshelf, displacing a small pile of wide hardback books that I have no intention of re-reading. good nick too. probs go to nearest charidee shop. i have thought of getting rid of CDs, but I don't think I can bear to part with more than a dozen, so it's hardly the space-saving exercise.

anyone wanting to get rid of pretty much any books at all can ship them my way. i appear to have purchased well over 100 books so far this year and am showing no signs of slowing down yet (esp as am going to be going to galloway and porter in cambridge this w/end and hopefully finally making it to church st books next week).

Galloway and Porter!! when i was there 2 weeks ago i found 2 books by Barbara Comyns that i REALLY wanted and that i haven't been able to find ANYWHERE else! may the magic of G&P shine on you too Toby...

Downsizing re: my collection -- HA HA HA HA! That said, I have cleared out some CDs recently, though mostly because they've either been reissued or are greatest hits sets which are irrelevant in the era of CD burners...

galloway and porter is quite poss my fave shop ever. i always find at least 10 books to buy (last time a load of carver/murakami for £2 each, biography of collette etc etc). the best thing ever ever ever was when they temporarily had a shop at xmas a couple of years ago where everything was £1 and there were tonnes and tonnes of good books...

are there any good remainder bookshops in london btw?

toby, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have expansionist plans. Though, I do have about 150 - 200 CD's I'd like to get rid of, but am just too apathetic to take them to second hand shop.

There's a splendid remainder bookstore in Leather Lane. You must, never, if you value your sanity, go there at lunchtime, though. Also I think it may have some slightly dodgy "titles" downstairs. Stacks of art, photography, travel, MEEJA and all that. And they play good music in there too. All round a pleasant non-lunchtime experience.

mmm, there's something for me to do this week! Man, I've been really bored today and didn't speak to anyone til about 7 o'clock apart from text messages! Still, the house is spotless and I have managed to downsize my wardrobe by about three t-shirts and a pair of knackered trousers, I had much higher ambitions than that though.

I've been progressively selling off vinyl, and the CDs (once I sort them) will be next. I have set myself the goal of reducing 8000 records & CDs to 5000 over the next year. It will be very fucking difficult..

Set aside some for me to look at when I get over to Australia...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

OK. The CD part will be a lot easier, thanks to glorious CDR technologies...

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And there ya go. Hey, those Lucksmiths albums I picked up were good fun, by the way. How come a certain Strathclyde outfit gets all the attention, dammit? I'll take these characters over B&S any day of the week.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Those Luckie boys get plenny of attention, believe me. Oddly enough they're HUGE in Scandinavia, among other places.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Indeed? Then I am happy. And actually not all that surprised, really.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i'm ultradownsized now! NO records. NO CDs. NO PC (and therefore NO audiogalaxy). NO stereo. NO books.

not gone forever though, back to my parents house. things are getting icky at home, in fact, i am approaching the status of NO HOME (for the 2nd time in 2 years! ha, at least i'm not in hospital at the same time this time - heh - hospital was my home last time around!)

gareth, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

gareth - is everything ok?

Queen G, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

apart from the 2 deaths, the pseudo-stalker, the ongoing 'situation of the heart', my dads illness, my parents financial problems, the impending homelessness, the threats from the landlord (ive been charged GBH you know?), and the virus ive downloaded which may have destroyed the last 2 years of my sisters university work, YES!

the above is said bemusedly, not snarkily;)

but not things are ok, my stuff is safe now, and my job is keeping things secure. i just need to find somewhere safe to live before i run out of patience with london altogether and move to manchester!!

gareth, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

well you know, everything doesn't necessarily mean everything...wish I could do something to help, take care ok?

Queen G, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

actually, i'm not completely downsized. i have ONE CD! my flatmate had borrowed it, so my cd collection is comprised entirely of depeche modes music for the masses
