have you ever been really popular? i mean really, like the center of attention for a large group of people, the subject of gossip, the bling bling (wo)man?

"she said she wants me/she said she needs me/she said she likes me/cuz i'm the shit."

last year my friend peter went to the pride ball in drag - he was so magnificent, most people thought he was a REAL woman, half his friends didn't even recognise him. and of course everyone in the place just pounced on him and he had everybody talking. i've never been the bling bling woman.

If I was ever the center of attention, they forgot to tell me. Hm, stealth attention, I like that.

Hey man, you had Nedtopia.

This is why I want a big white wedding, so I get to wear a big white frock & have everyone looking at me & all my friends & family coming up to me and saying how wonderful I am.

WHat if you spilt wine down yourself then.

Me, I just like undermining other peoples mass popularity. Ultimate power behind the throne complex.

Emma you have just made me spend about 15 minutes planning my dream wedding to my GRATE NEW POP CRUSH Mike from THE STREETS but then I haf realised that as today I haf NO CLEAN CLOTHES apart from a faded black Joy Division tshirt and black WORK TROUSIS that I am too much of a goth for him and curses all my illusions have crumbled.

I have actually had that a few times Jess, but not all the time. It feels a bit strange as you have to live up to what they think and pretend not to be so rubbidge. I think I may have been gossiped about but because I am lovely I was usually the one being told the gossip rather than being gossiped about which I much prefer.

It's a bit wank to be the first person to say yes, and I always put things so badly I'll come across a cunt whatever I say, but my in- built arrogance and need to answer honestly has overridden my sense of self-preservation.

When I was 15, I went to a party, despite having German measles (the wussiest disease ever, unless you're pregnant). There, I met several new people, mainly girls. At the time I didn't know many girls so it was v nice. The following week, my mate Ben went on a date with this tall Swedish blonde called Hannah; I chaperoned him and this girl called Ella chaperoned her. The date went pretty shit for them, but me and Ella got on like a house on fire. So did me and Hannah.

Anyway, our social circles (very much us boys and them girls) started mingling, and I met more of their friends. Somehow, and I have no idea how, I became the focus for about a dozen girls from Putney High School - Ella, who had rapidly become my best friend, used to tell me about how all the girls would be discussing me, who fancied me, who didn't, who really fancied me but pretended they didn't, etc. etc. It was great, but must have done ridiculous things for my ego. Which, in turn, made me more confident around the girls. So I had an immensely happy year or so being the object of adoration for almost a whole year at Putney High, and pretty much took advantage of the situation. Hard to imagine if you know the bald, pasty me of today.

Brickbats and "what an arrogant twat" comments welcome. I am in no way the same person I was then.

Pete on my wedding day I will be drinking ONLY champagne and will not spill it on myself.

Sarah, Mike is from Birmingham, he probably wuvs gothy bitches. Sorry, 'birds'.

Emma, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

when i was drinking i had lots of friends - at my 18th had over a hundred ppl there...

Now I am lucky if I want to be in the same room as 10 other people, or vice versa...

but I like me a lot better now I'm sober...so there's a moral there somewhere

Queen G, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Large group?

Nope, never been popular.

jel --, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No, not really, only on the interweb ha.

Tom, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wow! Is that Tom Ewing? The Internet Journalist! Blimey! He's GREAT.

A Big Fan, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Of course not. IRL or on the interweb.

Well I don't know if I've ever known a bling bling man or even seen one. I guess I was quite popular at the start of college and there was a sort of buzz where everyone was dead interesting to everyone else, but I've kind of dropped out of things a bit now, and I tend to socialise with people I knew before. Since I've pretty much decided to leave this course in favour of...something else, it's odd that ties are loosening naturally anyway.

I am not surprised Ronan has no friends if he is always repeating himself like that.

Emma, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes I better just say shut up once then.

Ronan, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

er...I probably should have said "shut up" after that actually.

Ronan, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

once again, the "word" on the "street" has passed me by. i am assuming that "thugs" just means yer mates, rather than actual hoodlums. no i am not popular and never have been. it's less hassle that way.

Be realistic - the wedding would have been in a chip shop anyway.

Being on stage is good for making one the centre of attention, but popularity-wise it's pretty meaningless. I'm lucky if anyone comes up to talk to me after a gig, other than g/f
