Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly comic strips - Search/Destroy

There were some great Wagner/Mills/Gibbons Doctor Who strips - like the one with robot Roman Legions serving some malevolent indestructible deity. Or "City of the Damned", which had to be retitled in America because Americans are mad. A personal favourite would be that one about Beep The Meep - the cute cuddly alien who was actually a galactic dictator and maniac. Or maybe the one which had BOTH werewolves AND the Daleks.

but the backup strips, many of them written by Alan Moore, were top too. Business As Usual, the one with the Autons, now that was top. As was that one about The Deathsmiths of Goth and their ultimate weapon. I'd love to see them reprinted.

Who wrote the Absalom Daak stories? Steve Moore I'll wager?

anyone else?

I think my vintage is a bit later - I remember The Tides Of Time with all sorts of cod-hippie nonsense with a Peter Davidson and a giant cosmic rubber duck - can anyone remember the actual plot? There was a poor one about a Japanese soldier which tried to be poignant rather too hard.

Business as Usual fantastic. I'm pretty sure I have that lying around somewhere still. Also the one where the Tardis is stuck in a time- eating jellyfish thing, and the doctor gives it heartburn by using the rapid return thingy (as used in Edge of Destruction/Inside the Spaceship?) which sends time back and he regresses through regenerations after watching K9 revert to molten metal.

Destroy that fucking penguin.

Didn't the indestructible deity thing behind the Roman Legion turn out to be Gog, Magog and TheOtherOne (Dave?), at least ten years ahead of the pish-poor McCoy story about the circus.

I've never read any of these. I just wanted to say, though, that Alan is the first person I've ever encountered who has said anything the slightest bit negative about Frobisher.

sorry. i never liked him.

I stopped reading the magazine because of him.

I liked Frobisher because I like the idea of a shape changer who likes being a penguin. I was reminded of him the other day when looking at Doctor Who books in the shop, because some turbofreak has tried to join Dr Who comics continuity with Dr Who TV continuity.

That is sad.

That Astrolabus character in late Dr Who comic was interesting. That's when it was drawn by... oh, whatsisname, carn't remember, bollocks. Who wrote it then?

Remember as well those weird Timelord stories they had - like the first appearence of future Marvel UK character War Dog. That "4D Vistas" story - in which the Timelords are attacked by enemies of theirs from the future - RoXoR. Cancell Lllorex, didn't someone say that?

Gibbons did it for a bit.

Continuity mentalists - classic or dud.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Heh. I avoided the strips because someone described Frobisher to me and I thought the entire idea was a really misconceived Douglas Adams rip-off.

I thought the Iron Legion was written by Moore...

Abslom Daak! yeah! everybody's favourite comic Who character!

Continuity Mentalists = classic as long as it's feasible. The kind of lengths DC went to to try and reconcile a universe with Swampthing in it and a Universe with Krypto the Superdog in it just aren't worth it.

The Iron Legion was deffo written by Mills & Wagner.

The Frobisher/Astrolabus stuff was drawn by Paul Ridgway. Well, Ridg (e)way was the surname. I have a feeling Steve Parkhouse might have written it.

here is a question the good woman asked me yesterday: to what extent were the classic Mills/Wagner Dr Who comic strips just 2000AD stories with the Doctor tacked on?

Have you ever read the Outcasts, DC 12-shot from way back when, by grant/Wagner and Cam Kennedy. It's basically just dredd from the mutants perpes point of view.

one year passes...
There is nothing to add to this thread I feel. Sorry Alan.

does anyone remember the one drawn by Mike McMahon about these intergalactic salvagers who stumbled across a Tenth Planet style Cyberman, with hilarious consequences?
