Why do English people drive on the left side?

because the Romans did. Anyway it's not just the English (or British!). All of the Commonwealth countries with the exception of Canada do, as does Ireland, as does Japan. A lot of countries *used* to drive on the left but switched to driving on the right coz the neighbouring country/ies did, e.g. Ghana and Sweden.

english is read from left to write so people should drive starting on the left. perfectly sensible.

Maria took the words right out of my mouth. Left is the start of something. You can hug the side of the pavement in the same way you hug the edge of a page. Is it the Japanese or the Chinese that write books from right (back) to left (front)? Anyway, they've got a right to drive on the right I guess. But they're crazy cause most people are right-handed and writing right to left smudges the page. Maybe they both write top to bottom actually. In which case they should do whee
