Ready for Indiana Jones number 5?

It says here:

Harrison Ford said Friday that momentum is building for a fifth movie in the "Indiana Jones" Jones franchise and that George Lucas is already cooking up a suitable plot for a heroic senior citizen with a penchant for whips and fedoras.

"It's crazy but great," the 66-year-old Ford said. "George is in think mode right now."

...

"It's automatic, really, we did well with the last one and with that having done well and been a positive experience, it's not surprising that some people want to do it again," Ford said.

I asked Ford who specifically is stirring up the idea of another revival, whether it was Lucas, Spielberg or the star himself? "Really, it comes from the ethos, from the ether. It's natural. It's a way of nature, of course, success breed opportunities ... also we don't stay as closely in contact as have in the last year, that's part of it."

...

The iconic star said he had some doubts that his long-gone archeologist hero would be an automatic 21st century sensation.

"It was never a lead-pipe cinch," Ford said. "It was a calculated business risk but i believe it paid off. I was somewhat surprised gratififed to see it did the business that it did. It was successful in almost every market. The first time we showed it a disinterested outside audience was at Cannes. That's a crap shoot of the first order. Not only is that audience sophisticated and film-knowledgae, it's French! And It's their country and their festival and we somewhat expected to be seriously slapped around. But we were not, we were embraced...it was very gratifying."

"George is in think mode right now."
frightening mental image

mizzell, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:38 (fifteen years ago) link

how about a prequel this time with no ford

CaptainLorax, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:39 (fifteen years ago) link

that whip is primarily for flogging dead horses then?

i still haven't seen the 4th one. maybe this one will be good and i can just pretend that one doesn't exist.

crystal skull is stupid, sometimes REALLY stupid, but it's got some good parts, mostly involving man eating ants or nuclear explosions. it would have been about twice as good without shia labeouf

omar little, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:53 (fifteen years ago) link

On the bright side, this would mean more Karen Allen from the start, I hope.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:53 (fifteen years ago) link

there was no real impending danger or mystery in Crystal Skull. that's what killed it.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

and what, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link

OOOOOOOOOO

and what, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I really don't get why everyone hated #4 so much. Only the first one could be called a good movie; the others are fluffy mood pieces with a lot of ridiculous nonsense in them.

i am the small cat (HI DERE), Friday, 3 October 2008 19:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i get why people think the others are good movies, i don't get the people who think anything other than the first is the best film though (i.e. people thinking temple of doom is best because it sticks to the awkward lol racism of the films that inspired it, yay for authenticity)

omar little, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:58 (fifteen years ago) link

The second two pale in comparison to the Ark, obviously, but Crystal Skull made them look like Aparajito and Apur Sansar by comparison.

polyphonic, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Eh, not really! Shia TheCow wasn't as embarrassing as Kate Capshaw.

i'm not gonna argue about this but last crusade has the most lols

I say "We named the dog Indiana" approximately twice a week, I think.

kate capshaw screeching @ bugs >>>> shia swinging from the trees

So, so true.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 October 2008 20:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I still find it funny that so many people react to that scene as if the movie stepped off the screen and shat in their laps.

I wouldn't necessarily say Last Crusade is better than Raiders, but I think I love it more. (nb: first movie I remember seeing in a theater, so my judgement is totally clouded)

it basically did

metametadata (n/a), Friday, 3 October 2008 20:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Biggest flaw in 4 for me was the CGI. Beating a dead horse and all, but a big part of the charm of the series for me was the look and feel of old-school technique (even when cheesy). No likey wall to wall green screen.

I would have totally forgiven Shia swinging and a big part of the warehouse action if it had been shot like Raiders.

sad man in him room (milo z), Friday, 3 October 2008 20:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I should have mailed it to the Marx brothers!

Adam Bruneau, Friday, 3 October 2008 20:14 (fifteen years ago) link

The biggest flaw in 4 was the entire film. Did they CGI the plot as well? It almost reached the stage where I thought it was parodying 30s films, with its continuity errors and , and what was with the crystal skull? A plastic head with baking foil in? Or that bit where his son is riding on a motorbike next to the train departing the station and the next second they're sitting in a bar? What about the flip-flopping Ray Winstone character? So strange, so inept. The scenes appeared to be blue tacked together. The chase through the jungle was about the only thing of any worth in the whole thing. Utterly absurd.

I only hope the fifth takes it to even further levels - missing scenes, bad dubbing, back projection etc and a roomful of monkeys as scriptwriters.

i really hope in this one they bring the nazis back.

cameron carr, Friday, 3 October 2008 21:28 (fifteen years ago) link

they make the best villains.

cameron carr, Friday, 3 October 2008 21:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought the whole point of 4 was to set up Mutt Jones: Greasemonkey Adventurer as a franchise.

There is no Grodd but Mallah and Congorilla is His Prophet. (Oilyrags), Friday, 3 October 2008 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

crystal skull is stupid, sometimes REALLY stupid, but it's got some good parts, mostly involving man eating ants or nuclear explosions. it would have been about twice as good without shia labeouf

would have been five times as good without george lucas.

Indiana Jones 5, as directed by David Lynch

Life Begins at Death (Bo Jackson Overdrive), Friday, 3 October 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

David Lynch's Indiana Jones and the Lost Highway

omar little, Friday, 3 October 2008 22:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Biggest flaw of 4 I thought was no jokes. Like at all. Indy says a couple really stupid jokes in the beginning and then for the rest of the movie you're glad he's shut up.

I really wish George Lucas's desire to have Lynch direct Return of the Jedi had gone through!

Adam Bruneau, Friday, 3 October 2008 23:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Basically, Dune with Ewoks. Which surely would have prevented 9/11.

No CGI and no fridge shelters and I'm in.

people thinking temple of doom is best because it sticks to the awkward lol racism of the films that inspired it, yay for authenticity

I think it's the best in spite of that.

I think it's uber lame.

fourteen years pass...

I can't believe how many people Indy has killed over time
