i cant even tell what country that is. the pointy orange thing and two church steeples make me think europe somewhere but that bridge and some of those apartment buildings seem america? wait. is that an amusement park?

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:28 (twelve years ago) link

god it looks horrible. bad shot maybe?

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:28 (twelve years ago) link

Ant Attack |=| (Ste), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:29 (twelve years ago) link

lil yawne (harbl), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:38 (twelve years ago) link

actually we could do this much more easily by working out which eastern european country's dictator-controlled national media outlets have orange as their signature colour

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:40 (twelve years ago) link

Some bored googling of "cantilever bridge" and "amusement park" has given me the answer, you are all way off.

ailsa, Monday, 13 October 2008 13:40 (twelve years ago) link

doubt it's in the midwest, since there's appears to be a hill off to the right.

Granny Dainger, Monday, 13 October 2008 13:41 (twelve years ago) link

Actually, I think I'm wrong. Never mind.

ailsa, Monday, 13 October 2008 13:42 (twelve years ago) link

ah got it,

I googled "green cantilever bridge" and then got bored of this approach after one fruitless page

No, I was right after all. Hurrah! Shall let the rest of you guess away though. Am assuming Ste got the same result as me. Not Europe.

Invercargill is possibly the ugliest place name I've ever heard in my life.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:47 (one week ago) link

Truly hope the Maori take over again and call it by its rightful name, Waihōpai

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:47 (one week ago) link

The Inver- part is nice, the -Cargill part not so much.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:53 (one week ago) link

Also it doesn't make sense unless it stands on the River Cargill, which it doesn't.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:56 (one week ago) link

I mean, it should be called Waihōpai anyway.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:57 (one week ago) link

Invercargill's second appearance on the thread, also appearing last April

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:59 (one week ago) link

What are the chances!

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:24 (one week ago) link

Apologies for the thread faux pas.

I guess the ugliness of the name suggests some sort of context of aesthetics thing because coming from the north of England where gill means stream and living in Scotland where Inver, as Tom D. has acknowledged, Inver means river mouth, the name doesn't read badly but without that I can certainly see how it would

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:29 (one week ago) link

I mean, it should be called Waihōpai anyway

Notwithstanding this of course

No reason a city can't make a repeat appearance!

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:49 (one week ago) link

It's interesting, Philadelphia has a LOT of Lenape (aka indigenous) names and a LOT of Welsh and Dutch names, so I'm used to some somewhat off-kilter naming situations— for example, I had many friends who went to Bala Cynwyd middle school, and I live near the Schuylkill River. I think that the residue of the Cargill corporation sort of rubs off on Invercargill and makes it more ugly than it actually is, to my eyes and ears.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 18:05 (one week ago) link

the actual pictures don't make it seem very appealing either tbh

How'd you get Finland?

a (waterface), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:02 (one week ago) link

It was obviously (Central or Northern) Europe. Found an identical Finnish traffic sign for bus + taxi lane. Then found that bus: part of the Vainion Liikenne fleet. checked the company’s Finnish Wikipedia page: active in quite a large section of the country, but I decided to try Turku first, as it was mentioned a lot (and I was guessing it wasn’t going to be Helsinki again, because we had it not too long ago), and yes, the church tower matched Turku Cathedral, so then it was off to Google Maps – found the spot quite quickly.

textbook case, I think. this thread taught me well.

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:14 (one week ago) link

bravo. this thread, even as a mostly lurker, is wonderful

a (waterface), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:19 (one week ago) link

Good job. I thought it might be Finland from the signs but either https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_European_road_signs or Turku's end of speed limit signs need updating.

I took drugs recently and why doesn't the UK? (ledge), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:20 (one week ago) link

impressive!

and I was guessing it wasn’t going to be Helsinki again, because we had it not too long ago

Did we? I know we had Tampere but I don't recall Helsinki!

cherry blossom, Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:21 (one week ago) link

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:26 (one week ago) link

Somewhere in Nevada? Bakersfield? I see those black tanker cars on road trips all the time.
(Wherever it is, doesn't look very city-like!)

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:28 (one week ago) link

That hovering thing in the front is scaffolding, so maybe somebody climbed up there for the shot?

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:29 (one week ago) link

There's a sign in the distance between the scaffolding uprights that I thought said "Mia" on the top left, but really it's too indistinct to be sure.

Billings Montana?

If it was petrochemical, it would likely be a much more secure facility - but something is definitely either filling or pumping out those tanker cars on the tracks. And it's pretty green, not dried out like West Texas.
