yeah it's Helsinki

That was interesting - I've never been to Helsinki and I imagined it as a modernist / International Style wonderland; although it looks nice I'm a bit disappointed to see quite a lot of neoclassical / 19th century gothicish architecture.

My experience w Helsinki and Finland in general is that the interfacing of of old and new architecture is spectacular. Tallinn, too
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 11 January 2021 13:47 (three years ago) link
I've visited once, and there's a lot of monumental Hanseatic architecture, redolent of Hamburg or Copenhagen, along with some excellent modernism. The huge central station marries the two.

doesn't feel like Lisbon to me, couldn't exactly tell you why though

First thought was Corsica or Sardinia. Going by the geography (with Sardinia to the south) is it Bonifacio?
― Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Monday, 11 January 2021 14:51 (three years ago) link
Stop sign in English, though? Gibraltar?
― Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Monday, 11 January 2021 14:52 (three years ago) link
there is what looks like a French blue/white street sign on the right side, though it's perhaps too low down to be a street sign.
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 11 January 2021 15:04 (three years ago) link
yeah looks like provincial France to me, no idea where though
― All cars are bad (Euler), Monday, 11 January 2021 15:07 (three years ago) link
Stop signs in France say "Stop" in English, no? I hope that is true as it's one of my favorite things about Quebec (where they stubbornly say "Arrêt")
― rob, Monday, 11 January 2021 15:10 (three years ago) link
yes, they say stop in English here!

I've been looking at some streets in Ajaccio on Google Maps and it looks kind of right, all the streets seem to be in a better state of repair though.
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 11 January 2021 15:15 (three years ago) link
It does look a little raggedy for Corsica to be honest (at least the parts I've seen).
― Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Monday, 11 January 2021 15:16 (three years ago) link
xp though I can't remember having seen one in ages, could it be that there aren't stop signs in Paris? I've barely been out of my quartier since 2019, between strikes & lockdowns, and I don't think there are any around here.
― All cars are bad (Euler), Monday, 11 January 2021 15:16 (three years ago) link
xp yes, raggedy is the word, this isn't a big tourist spot

I lived for more than a year in Marseille & have spent time in numerous other cities in the south of France, like for example Narbonne, and that decrepit vibe is par for the course, even in Marseille's city center. I'm not guessing Marseille though, the sky is wrong.

Both pics look south of France to me, and the first pic has a very typical French house number on the left hand side (although do they have those same blue house numbers in Spain/Italy? I don't know).

I'd actually guess Northern Africa... Melilla or Nador
― flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 00:43 (three years ago) link
Still think it looks French, but I also wonder about the terraced houses in pic 1 - not so common in France, old quarters tend to have small apartment blocks not houses. Also the window shutters are green, which is more common in Italy than France, although still perfectly possible for France.

Actually, is it Naples? That glass arcade in the foreground looks a lot like the 19th century glass mall there.

huh yes the church does make it look like Messina, and that's consistent with it seemingly being on a strait. I've not been there!

The big McDonalds sign at the bottom left in the second pic (if you zoom in) had me googling branches of McD's that would match up with the geography but needed the third pic with the proximity of what looks like mainland over the water and the shape of the docks to really narrow that down.
― nashwan, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 16:45 (three years ago) link
