tempting fate - classic or dud

I find myself doing this as ostentatiously as possible lately to wind up people who believe that making confident predictions/observations out loud, with your voice, can cause it to rain, or a child to die at an inconvenient time of the day, or Ashley Young to get injured

Do you find that a certain sort of contradictory dislike of tempting fate creeps into your otherwise rational outlook? I think maybe my penchant for brazen fate-tempting may partially be a sort of irritable overcompensation for this stupid quirk of mah brain

Barack's not gonna get assassinated btw he'll win no probs take it easy

If the kids even suggest Wolves are gonna win mid-game I feel obligated to punch them in the face.

I'm totally against superstition when it leads to any actual action or lack thereof, but when it comes to this sort of thing, it seems to me there's zero opportunity cost to holding one's tongue and the infinitesimal benefit of feeling like you're "doing it right" or whatever.

Also, am a Cubs fan and a Democrat, 2000 was my first election night where I paid close attention, so am SERIOUSLY freaked no matter what.

have this one mate who gets really moody when things start going wrong in football matches, he was convinced Blues would equalise when Villa beat them 2-1 at St Andrew's last year, I was like grabbing his head screaming "BLUES ARE SHIT LOOK THERE IS ONE MINUTE LEFT AND WE HAVE THE BALL AND WE ARE DEFINITELY GOING TO WIN WHY ARE YOU BLIND TO THE TRUTH IT IS MANIFEST BY THE NATURAL LIGHT"

I am completely in favour of holding one's tongue when there is a very real chance that commenting will make you look really stupid later on, eg singing "you're not singing any more" five seconds before the opposition go down the other end and score

Sorry for the excessive soccerball slant to mah examples, but I think this is probably area of my life where this happens most and irritates me most

Got all up in a friend's face when we beat Wednesday in that FA Cup 5th round penalty shootout mentalism in the 90s, felt embarrassed about screaming FUCK YOU, WANKERS afterwards.
