I like canines the best.

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I chose human dentition bcz we have it. However, I am a big fan of the dentition of the armadillo:

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

c'mon its got to be the canine. they make me feel like i could survive as a vampire or a caveman woman.

don't bite your friends (sunny successor), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the term you're looking for is "cave hermaphrodite."

nabisco, Monday, 3 November 2008 20:11 (sixteen years ago) link

canine for sure! I have one really cool vampire-esque canine...the other one seems to have chipped :(

Autobot Lover (jel --), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:11 (sixteen years ago) link

According to a thing I read, the thing people miss most when brushing (as in they do not adequately brush this area) is the front of the bottom middle two incisors.

This seems improbable!

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I could very easily see that being true! Which would be unfortunate, since that's exactly where most of the tooth-destroying stuff that goes into your mouth winds up.

nabisco, Monday, 3 November 2008 20:14 (sixteen years ago) link

It has made me very conscientious about brushing those teeth. (And all my others.)

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:15 (sixteen years ago) link

i am 24 and i don't have wisdom teeth yet what does it mean

horrible (harbl), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah that works for me, you either start on the right or left, so I guess some could not brush the front...coz their arm is tired.

Autobot Lover (jel --), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:16 (sixteen years ago) link

My wisdom teeth cost me $1200, grrr. In fact every year I spend $300-400 or so on dental work out of pocket for what my insurance doesn't cover (I have 80% coverage on dental, pfft)

Canines, canines, canines...

snoball, Monday, 3 November 2008 20:16 (sixteen years ago) link

My teeth are like my most highly valued thing. Although they are gross and yellow. I have a big revulsion about toothpaste and foamy things and etc etc that means no whitening toothpaste or whitening gels/strips. Consequently, although my teeth are extremely healthy from thorough and regular flossing, brushing (electric toothbrush I love you) and fluoride mouthwash, they are wicked yellow. Nasty yellow.

My one bourgeois dream is porcelain veneers.

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

They are kind of crooked, too.

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Incisors, because mine come together very nicely and allow me to bite through the roast beef in a sandwich without having to gnaw at it sideways.

don't bite your friends (sunny successor), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:20 (sixteen years ago) link

yup, clearly canines, if only for the joy of having a pair of barkin' dogs in your mouth.

The one thing I actually was able to MAKE myself change in my life was learning to floss. That happened overnight and has lasted about a decade. I'm inordinately proud about it.

And how about those teeth-falling-out dreams?

forksclovetofu, Monday, 3 November 2008 20:21 (sixteen years ago) link

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Tooth-falling out dreams have never happened to me, surprisingly, esp given my complex and deep feelings regarding them.

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

my teeth grew in perfectly straight but that caused a big prob because they were so straight and tight it was hard to floss them

don't bite your friends (sunny successor), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

i think the teeth falling out dreams are actually about being a filthy liar.

don't bite your friends (sunny successor), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I highly recommend Dentek floss picks. They are the only ones that can get between my teeth.

I always floss my teeth in movie theaters. Go alone, sit in the back, sneak in a beer, drink it, floss. Nice evening.

Many more than usual.

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I advise strongly against using Dentek floss picks. They are the one floss pick that will never go between my teeth.

I never floss my teeth in movie theaters. I go with friends, sit in the front, buy from the concession, and watch the film. Good morning.

wisdom teeth: yeah I still got 'em.

Pillbox, Monday, 3 November 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link

God, I'd have to take a photo of myself with my mouth open, and I don't think I want to do that. I'm so self conscious about my teeth I'd have to clean and floss them about three times before taking a picture of them.

I have three canines because I was born without one of my adult other side teeth. When that baby tooth on one side dropped, the canine came down in its place, and I've never lost the original baby canine.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Monday, 3 November 2008 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Or maybe just a shark-themed ska band

nabisco, Monday, 3 November 2008 21:06 (sixteen years ago) link

OK! Be prepared, this is gonna be like a horrorshow from the BIG BOOK OF BRITISH SMILES (American dentists really did do the best they could with my teeth, but all my babytooth loss occurred in Britain, and you know what our dentistry is like.)

MY THREE CANINES:

nabisco, Monday, 3 November 2008 23:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I had one tooth to the right of my front teeth that never had an adult tooth behind it, so when I was eighteen and had my wisdom teeth pulled, I also had that one yanked and they put in an implant. I was supposed to wear a "flipper", something that fit to the roof of my mouth with a fake tooth to space it, but i was too-cool-for-school and liked walking around with an Alfred E. Neuman gap for a few months. Anyways, I used to have straight teeth, but my front teeth reshifted during the flipper period and now they're permacrooked. The implant has lasted almost fifteen years with no problems though. I recommend em... but wear your flippers!

forksclovetofu, Monday, 3 November 2008 23:29 (sixteen years ago) link

i know a guy who was born w/a full set of teeth

888 (ice crӕm), Monday, 3 November 2008 23:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Btw: an implant means they drill a hole in your jaw where the tooth should be and put a titanium socket in there. They let that heal for like six months and then they open up the hole and SCREW A BIONIC TOOTH INTO YOUR SKULL, so that's kind of awesome.
On the negative, if I ever get my teeth knocked out, it could really fuck up my face and get super expensive. So don't hit me in the face.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 3 November 2008 23:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I had a neighbor in middle school who had a bunch of teeth knocked out in some kind of bike accident, and was given one of those flipper/spacer things -- almost like a foldable palate-fitted retainer with fake teeth on it. Sometimes he would yawn too big and the whole thing would collapse off the roof of his mouth, so it would look to the casual observer like his entire mouth had crumbled to pieces in the space of a second.

nabisco, Monday, 3 November 2008 23:56 (sixteen years ago) link

("Crumbled" as in 1 of 4 teeth would randomly fall onto his tongue for a moment)

Ha ha, no, it's lodged pretty firmly in there. It's not entirely attached at the top, though, and I have to be really careful not to get food caught in it. But it's not coming out.

I kinda wish it would come out, because I want to get a METAL TOOTH like an pirate when it does fall out.

But that would entail my going to a dentist, which I haven't done in decades coz I am scared of dentists. (Partly because they always used to open up my mouth and go "Holy shit, you have weird teeth!" and then talk about pulling them all out and moving them around - NO NO NO.)

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm also missing an adult tooth (a molar for me) and still have the milk tooth. My incisors don't meet too well and so aren't much good for anything except making me feel bad about my crooked yellow Britisher fangs; my canines are kind of blunt, ruining all my Connor Smedley flesh-tearing fantasies. So, pre-molars for me, then.

My toothbrushing always starts on the bottom right and the other bits always get much less because I'm bored by then. I felt bad about it until I found out that part's in the worst condition anyway. Time to worry about my brushing technique...

device may be used to practice dribbling (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 11:39 (sixteen years ago) link

My incisors don't meet AT ALL and I had several thousand dollars worth of expensive American dentistry to even get them anywhere close (they're a lot better than they used to be!)

I think it actually might be a fairly common Britisher mutation to be born with missing adult teeth.

I spent extra time this morning brushing behind my bottom front teeth. It's bloody hard to reach them properly, actually.
