what the hell is a cup ?

Does anyone know how to convert American cooking measures into some thing that makes some sort of sense in England . Specifically how much exactly is a cup in ounces ???...i'v already asked a couple of Americans and so far i'v been told to just use the same cup for everything ...this is fine until you have to work out proportions of other non cupped ingredients . It seems that there are no conversion tables that don't involve complicated maths ( all I want to do is a bit of baking not university bloody challenge !!)...so please if anyone can answer this in a way a simple English girl can understand...HELP MEEEEEEEE ..Thankyou : )

acc. the NEW COMPLETE BOOK OF COOKERY, 4 cups of flour = 1 lb of flour, and a cup of (say) milk = 8 fl.oz

1 lb of castor sugar = 2 "good" cups
6 oz of moist brown sugar = 1 cup

what are you cooking?: it has some others, like biscuits crumbs and peanuts

A bell is... until it is struck.

1 *US* cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 8 fluid ounces = 235ml.

1 *British* cup = 10 fluid ounces = 284ml.

Best solution for dishing out solid stuff - buy a set of cheap scales and some measuring cups (1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4-size), and make allowances for the differences in US and Brit cup sizes.

Does this help? " 'If I ever see you again I'm going to kick you in the balls. You better be wearing a cup, motherfucker!'" Eddie Van Halen, quoted in David Lee Roth's 'Crazy From the Heat'

not sure about the bell thing

Brian is being silly. ;-) A Bell is a Cup...Until It Is Struck is the title of an album by Wire.

Random threads, actually. But he deserves some sort of mockery for that abomination, no?

No

1 oz. = 30 ml or 30 cc
1 cup = 240 ml or 240 cc

For cooking purposes, round up to 250 ml or 250 cc and you're golden.
