Anyone ever fancied someone who worked at a record store?

Blimey, and she's more into British guys!

Oh no. Wait. She's fictional. Damn.

Anyway, seriously? No. Urban myth.

I didn't know Ryan Giggs was so old, or a TV repairman!...

Yes, I bought something like 300+ CDs from said record store just to go in and talk to him. I'm pretty sure he was interested in me too, but he had a woman at the time, who always wore this same Oasis t- shirt every time I saw her, wtf? Anyhow I didn't find out they had broken up until way too late and I was seeing someone else. Missed opportunities and all. The guys in that store all liked me though, I was one of the few women in there, and I knew all the Britpop they listened to, one of 'em called me "Manicsanpulp" all the time and then would grin like an idiot, it was pretty funny at the time but now it vaguely annoys me.

Nah. Never fancied boys who worked at record stores. (even though Other Music in NYC used to have the cutest staff in the Western World...) Me, I always get crushes on boys who work in rehearsal studios. But I expect if I say one more thing about Dan or Ollie, the collective internet will rise up and gag me. Damn, they're cute, tho. ::happy bounce::

Oh and one time, me and a friend were at Rough Trade and they were filming a Helen Love video, we hid in the corner...but it did get awfully crowded, so that's almost a crush! :)

When I lived off Byres Rd. in Glasgow I kind of had a crush on Stephen Pastel, who worked at the John Smith's (?) record shop. But maybe that's more of a popstar thing.

I was stunned by how many ILM touchstones were mentioned in that article. Favorite passage: "I wanted to get the first Modern Lovers album, but I didn't want her to know I didn't already own it," said Jody Osbourne of San Diego. "To cover up, I told her some big, long story about how my friend is such a jerk because he borrowed it a long time ago and never gave it back. When I was done with this four-minute spiel, she just said, 'I hate Jonathan Richman.' I wanted to curl up in a ball and die."

I have actually crushed an employee at a Tower Reccords in Boston. He had the usual "I'm too cool to work here although I do" attitude and would't help me find a price in some minidiscs. He is now flat. The courts ruled it was self defense. I was a hero.

I used to have a crush on this guy that worked at Free Being records on Second Ave. and St. Mark's Place in NY in the Eighties. He was always really sweet and enthusiastic, unlike the hideous aging punker Bleecker Bob wannabe that ran the store. I'd see him out at catch-as-catch-can clubs like the Pyramid and I'd think, "Hey, maybe he's one of those experimental, bi-curious indie rockers I hear about from time to time?" But nothing ever happened, we'd just nod hello.

His name was Mark and he went on to become the bass player in Pavement. And, sadly, Free Kitten.

No, but I've often thought they were supreme dorks!

Nude Spock, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wait a minute - Arthur - are you talking about Pavement's first bass player or 2nd? Cause in the Famous People thread I just mentioned that their 2nd one works at Jones Diner. He has a mean jukebox technique.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hmmm, I don't know Tracer. Mark Ibold, was he the first one or the second one? I was wondering what he'd been up to since Pavement split. Actually, last time I saw him was about 8 years ago. I was DJing and he came up to me and gushed about some semi-obscure Pat Smear song I played, sweet as ever. I guess being an indie kingpin and hanging out those lovely, lovely gals in Free Kitten hadn't gone to his head.

When I worked at a record store I had a little goth girl who had a crush on me. She was very sweet: she used to come into the store and bring me drawings of myself and stuff, and she always wanted my opinion on Joy Division, Marilyn Manson and the like. I even persuaded her to buy a Belle and Sebastian CD once. Anyway, when I left the store, on my last day she brought me a little silver ankh symbol, like the one Death wears in those Neil Gaiman comics, to remind me of her.

I thought she was very sweet, but it did get a bit out of hand eventually and I had to stop her. Ah well.

Used to get weird DJ groupies when I was DJing too. But I've never personally had a crush on a record store employee. Maybe because I've been one...

Paul Strange, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You never have time for DJ groupies, cause you're always too busy trying to pull the *bands*! mwah hah hah!

masonic boom, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't know... I always find the bands are trying to pull the promoter... ;)

There's this gal I've fancied for quite some time and when I found out she used to work in a record store I nearly creamed my jeans...

one month passes...
His name was Robert. He was short and sweet and had good taste. He worked at a bookstore in the mornings and a record store in the evenings. He was my sainted knigt at 17.

I used to have a BIG crush on a girl who worked in my local record store. But since I knew her before she worked there, and had a big crush on her from the minute I first met her, this may not count.

alex thomson, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

God, I only DJ'd ONCE, and I had DJ groupies. Hooray! What a racket this is, why did I ever bother to learn how to play guitar? Playing guitar is difficult, ANYONE can be a DJ.

Kate the Saint, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Answer is YES!!!! But NOT because she worked at a record store - not at all. Because of Other Things.

the pinefox, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Because she had eyes that could drown a man's soul, yes?

JM, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

there's a girl working at tower next to tottenham court rd tube station that is quite cute

gareth, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

duh, i meant virgin not tower

gareth, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

hello, i think this is my turf, for once. to answer the question: yes yes yes. but strangely, not in the locale of the article. although everyone around here knows that thing. the guy who owns low yo-yo (record store, duh) said when that onion came out he got more emails in one hour than he ever had in a week, and that some other guy who worked at another record store was trying to find out if the store in the article existed. question: why is the girl in the picture, um, not cute? the girl i had a crush on was way prettier.

ethan, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Okay, when I click on the link to check (cos I forget what she looked like but I do remember her being distinctly not nearly as cute as anyone I know), it just brought me to the Onion main page. So apropos of nothing I'd like to point out that the Hitler Anne Geddes in the sidebar is the funniest thing I've seen in ages.

A friend of mine had such a crush. He introduced me to her, and praised my taste. I proceeded to expound on the virtures of the Mel. C solo album. Poor guy.
