'70s road movies: a (no doubt incomplete) poll

watching grand theft auto on tcm right now, just thinking about the whole wave of these movies. when the interstates were still new enough to seem kind of wild-west, i guess. and maybe more crucially when hollywood car-chase technology improved enough to really convey the rhythms of a high-speed chase. sorry for any omissions, feel free to write in. (there were obvious '60s precursors to this -- bonnie and clyde and easy rider -- but the '70s seems like the golden era, with '71 in particular a spectacular year.) using a loose and subjective definition of "road movie," and i haven't even seen all of these (including the wenders ones), but they seem to fit the general parameters.

it's interesting how the genre sort of progresses or regresses from angst and terror (the road as existential landscape) through romantic/family comedy/drama (the road as bonding experience) to the early '80s pratfalls of blues brothers and cannonball run (the road as one big vaudeville stage).

tossup between two lane blacktop and badlands, out of the ones i've seen

Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (1974)
The Gumball Rally (1976)
Damnation Alley (sort of, 1977)
High-Ballin' (1978)

Depending on how flexible your definition of "road" you have White Lightning (1973) and Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) plus others.. what about the Herbie movies?

Josefa, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 04:52 (seventeen years ago)

herbie for sure. the kiddie variation.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 04:59 (seventeen years ago)

I was gonna say Melvin and Howard, but turns out that's '80.

Eazy, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

I've seen every single movie in the list. Couple more to add...

Harry And Tonto (1974) Sort of a proto-version of The Straight Story

Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia (1974)

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 30 December 2008 05:18 (seventeen years ago)

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot with Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges directed by Michael Cimino fit in this. Five Easy Pieces doesn't seem to fit, but I guess the beginning and end (from what I remember) are about as road as it gets.

These movies are bleak.

james k polk, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

yeah five easy pieces is the most marginal one, but the waitress scene is totally a road-movie classic.

I wish Vanishing Point had impressed me a little more. The music didn't help.

Two Spielbergs in your original list, and his production company is called Amblin'. Dude likes him some road movies.

Yeah, five easy pieces is only like 1/3 to 1/2 a road movie. But it's one of my favorite films so I voted for it. It does have some classic road movie stuff in it -- the diner scene, the depressive hitchhiker, the motel, the ending, etc. I guess you could even count the traffic jam with the piano on the truck. I really like the way it feels like different genres at different times actually -- it kind of mirrors the character.

Bless the Beasts and Children should be on here. Not the best but pretty good for what it is. (And has a post-Lost In Space Billy Mumy.)

Wow this is a tough choice. Badlands vs. Two Lane Blacktop maybe? Five Easy Pieces?

The Great 70s Car-Chase Movies Battle

ah, missed that thread. but these aren't just chase movies. it's those plus these sort of quirky picaresque and/or doomy road-to-nowhere pictures.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

From this list, Death Race 2000. An endless stream of great lines in that film.

But overall, MAD MAX (the original).

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Of the movies that didn't get a vote, the Last Detail is much better than the other two.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

I thought I voted for Last Detail

caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

You really think it's better than Five Easy Pieces? It's good but. . .

Duel beat Deathrace 2000 and Vanishing Point? Huh/what?

Nate Carson, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

Sure, why not?

Alex in SF, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe I need to watch it again. I did not recall it being remotely in that caliber.
