Ian Lafferty (Josh Zuckerman) is an 18-year-old recent high school graduate. He searches for a girl online making it look as if he's buff and suave, although he's sweet and unassuming. He soon meets "Ms. Tasty" (Katrina Bowden) and agrees to meet her in person. She lives in Knoxville, while he lives in Brookfield. With his best friends Lance (Clark Duke) and Felicia (Amanda Crew), they go in a Pontiac GTO borrowed without permission from Ian's arrogant homophobic older brother Rex (James Marsden). On the way the car is damaged. It is repaired for free by Amish people, while they join a Rumspringa party at which Fall Out Boy is playing a concert. The three promise to come again on the way back to do some work in return. Lance falls in love with Amish girl Mary (Alice Greczyn). They go to jail for accidentally damaging a police car, and are released after Mary pays the bail. They find a hotel that sports a wide variety of role playing rooms. Rex arrives angrily and insists that they go back and that Ian cannot visit Ms. Tasty. After Ian pretends to be gay, Rex allows him to see Ms. Tasty, hoping this encounter will change Ian's mind. However, they are scammed by Ms. Tasty and her psychotic boyfriend, who apparently do this to steal cars for chop shops. Ian saves the day, Ms. Tasty and her boyfriend are arrested, and Ian and Felicia realize they love each other. Lance refuses to go back home at the end of the trip and stays behind to marry Mary. Ian gives his virginity to Felicia, who both reveal their love for each other at the end of the film. Also we learn Rex's latent homophobia has a root cause as he turns out to be gay himself. At the end of the film, a picture is shown of Lance and Mary being married, accompanied by Ian and Felicia. He's shown sporting a beard much like Ezekiel (Seth Green), one of the Amish people. During the credits there is a clip of Ezekiel and Fall Out Boy arguing over the fact that the Amish fixed Fall Out Boy's tour bus and all that they got in return was "a five song set."

Being as this film grossed a stunning 11mill domestic in America, why is it being launched in the UK with the kind of promotional blitz more commonly associated with a new X-Man movie?

Because it grossed a stunning 11 million in America?

how facile does a teen comedy plot have to be before greenlight

So this is basically "40 18 Year Old Virgin" crossed with "Road Trip"?I guess that they are trying to make money after a dismal return in the US, by promoting it at a time of year when there are very few other releases and people are sitting around with nothing to do.

I also suppose that, in the same way that crap UK TV comedy shows are sent to the US, crap US comedy movies are sent here...

Well, what with the release of Star Trek being delayed until May 2009, where else are Pegg fans going to go?
― snoball, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)
Why to Knoxville of course

What's the name of the company that do all those straight-to-DVD sex comedies? Something Monkey?

Someone needs to do a study on the percentage of American comedy movies that would be lost if the Amish had never existed.

I thought this was a pretty good movie...unlike most of the other stupid teen-or-sex-or-teen-sex comedies, this actually captures a little bit of how it feels to live in a teen-sex-comedy world (ie ours)...the plot was watertight, the jokes seemed a little fresher than usual (the posting things on the Internet running gag always pulled laughs), the characters were not exactly three-dimensional, but more well developed than usual. Also, Seth Green was hilarious. I liked it more than American Pie, thought it was funnier, and if not exactly smarter, than more true to life than other modern genre-defining sex comedies like Wedding Crashers and The 40-Year Old Virgin...

Some of it was great - the guy's friend was great, also the huge fight at the end, and Seth was great as always...something about it fell a little flat for me overall. I had read so many great reviews about how good it was, I got my hopes up I guess.
