Chris Morris vs Armando Iannucci

that ben thompson guy, in his so-so book 'sunshine on putty', compares the 'day today' crew with 'beyond the fringe', and figures that while morris = nu-peter cook, iannucci is the 90s david frost.

this is some nonsense, and was when he published it; but the idea in the book is that iannucci is the industry pro, morris the fearless revolutionary, etc.

arguably they play different roles, and while morris is limited as a performer, iannucci is even more limited. nonetheless, here is a poll.

armando iannucci 9
chris morris 6

Morris is a bit lazy, isn't he?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

Both peaked with The Day Today, both had a 95-98 run with great stuff interspersed by stuff that was really overrated/doesn't stand up to repeat viewing (Jam, Friday Night Armistice) but Armando came back hard at the turn of the decade with The Armando Ianucci Shows and The Thick of It, while CM hasn't done anything of worth for nearly 14 years now.

Mare Street tour guide (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 January 2009 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

I think Morris as Cook and Iannucci as Moore may be a better comparison as Iannucci looks like he might 'break' America if his piece on his movie in todays Guardian is accurate.

Shallow Gravy (Billy Dods), Thursday, 29 January 2009 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

Still, if Morris's movie 'Carry on Suicide Bombers' comes off...

Shallow Gravy (Billy Dods), Thursday, 29 January 2009 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

basically agree w/dom

however, "charm offensive" comes close to erasing all previous gains

Can't see him ever become an "unlikely sex symbol" however, I think he'd make an unlikely unlikely sex symbol

Time Trumpet was fucking dreadful as well. Also the worst thing Stewart Lee's ever done.

this is what thompson meant, i guess. iannucci started out on 6:30 r4 landfill satire, and he still keeps a hand in it.*

got to pay the bills, you know. morris somehow does without.

*even so, time trumpet and charm offensive are still better than the fucking now show.

Not even Time Trumpet can cover up TTOI's brilliance, true say. lol xposts

However, much as it saddens me to have missed that "what are you a stan of" thread, and much as I entirely agree that The Day Today is Chris Morris' televisual highlight, and that Jam is overrated, the equivalent radio series Blue Jam is pretty much my favourite programme ever in any medium. Would hold out for In The Loop before voting but there's no option of that, sadly.

And as for Nathan Barley, I say treat it as a big dumb stupid laff-out-loud slapstick comedy that dares you to consider it as some kind of cutting social satire, knowing that you'll utterly reject it on those terms (unless you're an idiot). It's a very clever bit of very silly self-clowning fun. By no means "great" but certainly entertaining IMO, especially in the context of what we've seen this decade.

Yeah, but Morris started off on BBC local radio:

That film is probably the film I am second-most-stoked-for in all time, just behind the forthcoming Gaspar Noe.

^ There will no doubt be some contrarians/revisionists saying that is the best thing he ever did (xpost)

I'm seeing In the Loop three days after this poll closes. so disregarding that, I would say Iannucci.

Gukbe, Thursday, 29 January 2009 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

Morris. Although I've not really seen enough of the thick of it and I've seen all of the Armando Ianucci shows but that was mainly while "going beta" after a heavy night out round a pal's flat so my recollection of them is blurry.

I did enjoy Nathan Barley, but Morris merely directed that, and there's nothing particularly interesting about the direction, and in fact I think with a better director it might have been a bit more coherent and less all over the place.

Also, although the day today is clearly better than Brass Eye, I still enjoy the latter, including the paedophile special which I must have watched in excess of five times and have laughed each time.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Thursday, 29 January 2009 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

and I don't know why I capitalised Brass Eye but not The Thick of It or The Day Today.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Thursday, 29 January 2009 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

Morris co-wrote Nathan Barley

Gukbe, Thursday, 29 January 2009 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

Brass Eye generally makes me laugh as well, especially episodes Crime, Drugs, Decline and Special (in that order). The others aren't so much kop.

xpost. lol, fail.

Armando is more consistent

The "Armando Ianucci Show" was brilliant.

Herring must have made cake off of Little Britain, surely? Even if he was only third wheel on the writing staff.

lol at that saturday night armistice clip. i've basically forgotten that show entirely but it can't have been all bad. ben thompson is right that the iannucci-schneider-baynham line-up is possibly one of the most untelegenic of our times.

There were a lot of funny bits in Armistice

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

But there was also Al Murray and Mel Giedroyc as a roving reporter double act.

Mare Street tour guide (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 January 2009 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

I've erased that from my brain with mind rubbers

best Armistice bit is OJ's autograph/confession.
