as if to convey something like "do you see what i have to put up with from this other character in the shot?? it's madness, i tell you."

I love it when Woody Allen does this, like in Annie Hall where Diane Keaton Freadian slips life for wife and Woody turns to camera to make sure we heard what she actually said.

All of those are "meaningful" looks, no?

StanM, Sunday, 14 June 2009 09:53 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think they're looking at the audience in the casablanca poster. they're facing the camera, but i think they're looking past us rather than at us.

Yeah Bogey's looking into himself really and Bergman's looking agonisedly away at the dork she's gonna stay with.

Casablanca: I thought she was looking straight at us, but it's indeed not quite true.

Looking at the mirror at us, but we are that boy (or something) :

Norman Bates with an eerily Michael Bloombergian expression in Psycho III. Oh no! It's more ill-conceived commercial development projects!

Almost every gurning face on these posters makes me want to commit violence.

James Morrison, Sunday, 14 June 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

I was musing on the godawful cliche of the movie poster, just the other day. This kind: more often than not a white background and usually 2 main leads gurning/tomfooling/WTF-facing at the camera, always for a romcom or a chickflick type glurgey movie.

And yr action/intense drama flick has the black/dark/night sky background, with 2-4 leads in head shot only, looking intensely and unsmilingly at the viewer.

Every fuckin time.

A little OT, but I'm impressed by the lengths the marketing team has gone to in sidestepping the fact that Chris Brown is in that movie.
