Stargate Universe (SG·U) arrives October 2009

SG·1 was a guilty pleasure of mine for 10 years, Stargate Atlantis started off alright but tanked fast. Still, I'm not surprised Wright and Cooper want to try again a third time.

Premise and themes

Stargate Universe will be set on the fictional Ancient ship Destiny, which was part of an Ancient experiment to seed the galaxies with Stargates millions of years ago. While a first ship was sent to seed the galaxies with Stargates, the Destiny was to follow a pre-programmed mission to explore these galaxies until the Ancients ascended and left the ship unmanned. In order to reach this ship, an address would have to be dialed consisting of nine chevrons, a possibility that had been unknown in the previous Stargate series.

The series begins when a team of soldiers and scientists from present-day Earth step through the Stargate to find the Destiny after their base is attacked. They are unable to maneuver the ship or even return to Earth, but they can use the Stargate to visit planets when the Destiny comes into the range of another Stargate and stops for brief periods of time. Life support including air supply is also a problem at first. There will be three major deaths in the pilot episode and one suicide by episode six. The writers have discussed the possibility that each season represents a voyage of the Destiny through a different galaxy.

Stargate Universe is written to appeal to both veteran fans and newcomers. It will be firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology without relying on it too often. Although it will still have the familiar Stargate themes of adventure and exploration, the show will focus mostly on the people aboard the ship. SGU will be more serialized than its predecessors, but the writers attempt to resolve each character story within the episode. The industry describes the show with the buzz words "dark and edgy". According to Robert C. Cooper, the essence of the story is "that sort of fear and terror of a tragedy combined with the sense that there is hope for us in the basic ways in which human beings survive". The increased levels of drama will still be balanced with humor to avoid pretentiousness. The differences between good and evil will be less apparent, as the ship will be populated with flawed and unprepared characters who were not supposed to go here. According to Brad Wright, the show will "hopefully explore the truly alien, and [avoid] the rubber faced English-speaking one". There will be aliens, but not a single dominant villain race like on SG-1 and Atlantis.

The whole trapped on a ship with no way home sounds a little bit Battlestar Galactica to me, and Lou Diamond Phillips' presence is a definite negative, but I'm still sorta excited about this right now.

Meh, SG-1 was all about the characters.

Still I suppose you could say the same about Star Trek, and that succesfully regenerated more than once.

The big reason why I never got into most sci-fi, including Star Trek, is that it never really had any ties to Earth. And if it did, it was always in the distant future. The cool thing about Stargate -- SG·1 at least -- is that it was both set in the present and had as much action on Earth as off.

I think that's also part of the reason I didn't feel as enthusiastic about Atlantis, and probably what will lead me to tire of this one as well.

The last couple of sentences in that spiel sound intriguing tho'. Fingers xed it really does manage to be "dark and edgy" and "truly alien".

Those trailers look decent, the drama one more than the action one anyway. It's all dark and grimey and claustrophobic like BSG, though, which is a drag.

No! Really? <--- LOL

Stargate University would probably be better served by airing on The CW. But I'd definitely watch!

Started tonight. I forgot to watch. Anyone else see it?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 3 October 2009 04:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Just seen the first couple. Patchy. Starts off with rather confusingly, with flashbacks inside flashbacks, trying to do too much. All of the characters seem dislikeable in some way - but Carlyle's character is no Begbie. But characters develop, of course, mustn't judge them too soon - and I'm not expecting it to be a chummy ensemble piece like the original SG anyway.

Having been stuck on a ship, they're stepping out on to a planet for the next episode so we might see how "truly alien" it manages to be.

Cool, I'm going to catch up on hulu in the next couple days and then try to watch the new one live on Friday night.

Song at the end of #3 nearly made me give up on the show, and life.

Ha, my other half has just finished watching that episode about two minutes ago, and it made me want to kick the telly in. Carlyle's accent is dreadful (I am no fan, this is just general observation from it being on in a room I just happened to be in, and me giving it a couple of cursory glances)

Finally a decent episode! Rush being a conniving bastard for a reason, instead of just at random. And the communication stones are a great emotion-wringing plot device. The jumping back and forth in the middle was lol.

I still haven't watched this. I almost feel bad for starting the thread now, because I can't even drum up any interest in watching it.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 November 2009 20:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I wouldn't worry. It hasn't approached even Terminator:SCC levels of quality yet.

George Mucus (ledge), Monday, 9 November 2009 21:13 (fourteen years ago) link

lol what a low bar.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 November 2009 21:19 (fourteen years ago) link
