Theme Park Rides: Search And Destroy

Search: Space Mountain at Eurodisney the best one I've ever been on. The Magic Mill at Thorpe Park for previously-told reasons of childhood bliss. All Dodgems.

Destroy: WHERE TO BEGIN? The thing at Chessington W.O. Adventures that hits you in the stomach. The Phantom Phantasia at Thorpe Park. All Tea Cup Rides. The really racist Chessington one with its greasy cowardly Arab. And most of all the Fifth Dimension (now defunct) where you went inside the TV Set and fought the Gorg.

Also - general theme park experiences. Start forming the 45-minute queue to post now...

Tom, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, a timely thread - I'm going to Chessington World Of Adventures next week.

Actually, it's because of Fifth Dimension that we're going. I went to a Ricky Spontane/eX-Girl gig a while ago with my brother and said that eX-Girl scare me in the same way that Fifth Dimension scared me (and yes, it did make me cry when I went on it the first time but it WAS scary)

But Search: Professor Burp's Bubble Works(CWoA), Dragon River(CWoA), the corkscrew thing at Alton Towers, Nemesis(AT). Wait, the best thing at Alton Towers is the crazy bus ride from the station to the park itself, does that count?

Destroy: that Galleon thing at CWoA which was definitely a death trap and all my friends all insisted that we all had to sit at the back with our hands in the air - this time, I'm not being bullied because nowadays, I only make friends with wusses.

Apparantly, the other week at CWoA, loads of people got stuck on Rameses Revenge for about half an hour. They had to keep giving them water so they didn't get heat exhaustion. They gave them all free passes afterwards, which is like the worst compensation ever. Or maybe it's the best, gotta get right back on that horse (isn't there an Ardal O'Hanlon joke about that - he broke his arm as a child and his father said "Son, you've just got to get right back up that pylon")

jamesmichaelward, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: This great one in Toronto where you stood up and were clamped in. Vertical drops, head missing steel bars by a whisker, that sort of thing.

Destroy: The queue to quality ratio of the Gorg experience. But good conversation mileage was had from the Gorg, so I don't hate him that much.

He's Not Here, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, admittedly taking the piss out of the Gorg is now in its 8th Glorious Year making it the Mousetrap of in-jokes, and the stomach punching machine was worse.

Tom, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'stomach-punching machine' shurely = the new puff daddy video.

I have read today that Brooklyn Cyclones caps now outsell every major- or minor-league baseball cap besides the Yankees (relevance: The Cyclone is the famous old wooden coaster out on Coney Island).

Sub-thred: What ride was so shaky/old that fear factor was multiplied by suspicion it would actually fall apart?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nagashima spaland's steel dragon 2000. the best.

junichiro, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ride of death-fear - old Rollercoaster at Margate. It's very slow. It's also made entirely of wood and rust.

Tom, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cedar point in ohio is the best theme park in the world and the only reason anyone would want to go to ohio. they have about 12 roller coasters now and the magnum, especially, is thrilling.

my memories of eurodisney consist of everyone cutting in line in front of me and my friend ruth, and here we thought that we, as americans, were supposed to be the ugly ones.

keith, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cedar point in ohio is the best theme park in the world and the only reason anyone would want to go to ohio.

isn't that snobby? i want 2 see every street corner in the world, the world ist beautiful. with no ohio no ohio players so that ist wrong.

junichiro, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it isn't snobby. there really is nothing of note in ohio otherwise, unless you want to see the rock and roll hall of fame but why would you. it might become more interesting in the future should the cuyahoga catch fire once more.

keith, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

every place has worth. i don't know where u live but how can u judge?

junichiro, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, the trees were nice and the sky was a deeper shade of blue than here in California. I don't know why that is. So the sunsets were always awesome. Maybe I just spent more time walking there. When I used to live in German Village and took the bus to school it was nice to ride through downtown when different people came on. But High St. was always dirty, and the smell of hot dogs hanging in the air around football season wasn't so great. And the crowds that would force you off the pavement, stop traffic, and leave broken beer bottles in the street.

Uh, theme parks - Magic Mountain has the best rides. Knott's Berry Farm is good around Halloween when they have - surprise! - Knott's Scary Farm. I like the dragon swing and the ride that's like a bunch of swing seats that rotate.

youn, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, the Magnum! I rode that one. I like the Gemini, too. I'm talking about going back, because there's a new one at Cedar Point, with an 80 degree (or something) drop. Cedar Point *is* the best.

Waiting in lines - my grandfather, rest his soul, knew so many people that once when we were waiting in a 2 hr. line for Space Mountain, he *knew* the people in front of us. And those weren't the only friends he'd bumped into in Disney.

I stuck my leg in the air on Space Mountain, and they shut the ride down and turned all the lights on. I felt so guilty that I cried for days and it ruined my vacation.

Kerry Keane, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like tilt a whirls and ferris wheels and those pirate ships. I have never gone on a theme park but for a week in the summer DAvid and i go to small town carnivals . We eat minidonuts, cotton candy and meat on sticks. It is sickening.

anthony, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am very deprived as I have not been to a theme park since we went to Alton Towers for a joint Emma's 15th / brother's 13th birthday party and my mum was scared all the kids would vom having scoffed too many egg sarnies and millionaire's shortbread. But it was great. I especially like the Black Hole.

I am not allowed to go to fairgrounds either, when we lived in Turnpike Lane there was always a fair in the park by the station but noone would go with me so I didn't get to go on the waltzers which I luv. Last time I went to the funfair was aged 17 on a cringe inducing double date to Thame Fair with a couple who are now married. Ted won me a vile bear with blue shiny ears in a balloon and I had to feign great girlie admiration and gratitude. Ick.

Emma, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma, you were still having super-uncool mum-organised birthday parties at the age of 15! That's so cool.

Nick, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, sadly the kids of leafy Buckinghamshire weren't into twocking (sp??) so we were unable to make our own way to Alton Towers. Buckinghamshire is bereft of similar theme park fun and nearby Woburn Safari Park is rubbish.

Emma, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have no idea what you're on about.

Nick, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was merely making the point that if you and a bunch of 15 year old chums want to go to a theme park that is a good 2-3 hours' drive away then the presence of parents is a necessity. Do you understand?

Emma, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I see. But round our way 15 year olds were far too embarassed to go to theme parks as a birthday treat. I don't think retro-kiddishness kicked in for a couple more years.

What the hell is twocking? Joy-riding?

Nick, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best rollercoaster I've been in in recent years is Superman: Ride Of Steel at Six Flags New England. My folks grew up in Akron, so I've heard for years about the amazing wonderment that is Cedar Point but I've never actually been there. I think this is a mild form of child abuse.

Dan Perry, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Taking With Out Consent i.e. nicking cars. I was taught it by a friend from Leeds. I think it is very popular up there.

It was not retro-kiddish, I was a late developer (but am now making up for it).

Emma, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Destroy and destroy again: Indiana Jones at disney. ugh. especially when they decide to make it go backwards - why? to make it worse, they tell you to hold your head back against the seat, which actually increases the neck and head bruising you incur on the damn thing. never, ever again. space mountain, on the other hand, is ludicrously great!

I found this page through Google. Anyway, I'm sure you found out that The 5th Dimension has been GONE since the end of 1993, and the ride with the greasy tour guide (Forbidden Tomb) took its place. Really they just ripped all the sets out and put new ones in. The most important thing I have to say is, go to http://www.reride.net/parks/chessington/5thdimension and relive those memories!!

Thomas Payne, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cedar Point! Cedar Point! Cedar Point!

It was totally spooky the way almost *everyone* there was wearing (Abercrombie and Fitch/Old Navy/American Eagle) blatant logo clothing though. It was like stepping into 1987 again.

Kim, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
odd timeing for a renewal of thread: Rotunda and Dreamland in this website's nation of origin have recently announced their closing. I'm rather happy then that I visited them this year. Also, Cedar Point announced their new attraction for next year is a 420 ft, 120mph coaster.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

HUMAN ROULETTE WHEEL! I lived quite close to Southport for several years and consciously avoided visiting the place (even though I was told there was a decent record shop). But had I known there was a human roulette wheel I would have been all over the gaff like a rash.

D: Back To The Future at Universal Florida. Me was 8 year old boy, 4 foot tall and skinnier than I am now. She was a blimpwoman, and we were sat next to each other. Back To The Future is one of those simulator rides (see: Star Tours), but has not seatbelts. No, it has a safety bar that goes down over the row. Thus, I am pinging forward and backward like an eight year old boy-shaped metronome that goes "OW!" instead of "Tick!" for three and a half minutes and harbouring very violent feelings towards Christopher Lloyd and his fucking dog for a very long time afterwards.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: Splash Mountain at Disneyworld. It's a rather extreme flume ride but inside the mountain, bizzarely, as you ascend, there are little animatronic dioramas of the animals from Song of the South, you know, Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby and all that. Then they take your picture as you go down the big drop and try to sell it to you on the way out of the ride.

I've heard there's a web site called something like "Flash Mountain" that has photos of people pulling up their tops and flashing the camera but I have not verified it.

In less than a week from now, I'm about to go to Cedar Point for the 1st time since 1983. Any tips?

holy shit

Now I'm really fucking jealous.

Really Fucking Jealous Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

I rode MaxAir last week - it was pretty cool, except it's the one ridfe that made me a little queasy. I think since it's repetitive motion.
Cedar Point-

Search: Millenium Force - oh fuck yes, search.
Raptor, Magnum - because it's pretty decent and the line is really short (sit in back - it's smoother, the front will kill your back.)
Wicket Twister - you MUST sit in the front row - you think you're going to fly off the track (the line is usually pretty short there too), Mean streak (rickety, but great), Gemini, Blue Streak, Power Tower (never a line & pretty fun), Mantis

Destory: all round rides, Top Thrill Dragster - just isn't worth the wait, destory at all costs: Corkscrew, Iron Dragon (unless you have kids or something), Demon Drop, Disaster Transport,

DAVE's secret to fortu-Oh look! Shiny! (dave225.3), Monday, 24 July 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

Disaster Transport

that's the name of a ride? bizarre

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 24 July 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

when i was there last, Demon Drop was THE new hot ride. I didn't ride it as the line was too long and I was possibly too young. The Gemeni was legendary then.

I rode that piece of crap Demon Drop/Freefall at Six Flags over Georgia later in life. It's become kind of a running joke now amongst friends...going out of our way to ride the worst ride still in operation.

Sadly my memroes of Cedar Point in 83 are merged with my memories of King's Island in 79/80, so it's all a blur now.

Thanks for the tips Dave!!

Now only if this thread could guide me on the rest of my vcacation (R&R Hall of Fame, Greenfield Village & Henry Ford Museum, and Motown)

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

The Corkscrew was broke the fear of rollercoasters i had at age 15.

One of the unfortunate results of leaving michigan is that Cedar Point is no longer just a 2-3 hour car ride away.

D: that stand-up ride(the Mantis?). that ride will beat you up, and I pulled a calf muscle just before I had to walk alla way back to the parking lot

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Disaster Transport - some irony in that name too - because it was the worst fucking ride in the history of theme parks - a "disaster" so to speak... So in order to make it better, they built a building around it and now you ride the worst fucking ride ever, in the dark.

DAVE's secret to fortu-Oh look! Shiny! (dave225.3), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Disaster Transport can be great on the days when there's nobody around, and you ride it in bulk. Hiding from the rain and the extreme sun by running thru the turnstiles repeatedly was a good way to kill an hour.

Don't know about the Indians. I can only fruitlessly pray to God that they serve Indian food in the park...

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Monday, 24 July 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

I don't remember if it still has Indians shooting at you. It has skeletons shooting at you throughout though.

mmm, amusement park curry.. ? Clean-up with rice, just outside of the tilt-a-whirl!

another tip - the food sucks everywhere, but if you go out the gate by the beach (behind the diving show) there is a TGI Friday's and a hotel with a restaurant on the beach, that you can walk to. Not much better than park food, but you can sit in a clean, air-conditioned place and get a beer and vegetables and things that aren't fried. There's another place on the other side exit called Famous Dave's - never been there, but that's where the marina-goers eat.
