GEETA MUST GO

On vacation, that is, before I lose my life to grad school. Just for a few days. I haven't got much money so trips to Uzbekistan, etc are out of the question.

Any suggestions?

Geeta, where are you starting from, and when do you want to go?

Iceland is surprisingly cheap and very very beautiful, esp. if you make a day trip to Thingvellir.

Iceland is only surprisingly cheap if a) you are a millionaire or b) you are referring to the dodgy supermarket chain not the country. But it is lovely.

Emma, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

departing from boston's illustrious logan airport

iceland is way expensive to fly to tho, no? never been there. what is with ppl randomly running into bjork there?! (ok i only knew one person who did - but he ended up being invited to bjork's family holiday party CREEPY i would have run for the hills etc etc)

geeta, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well the population is something ridiculously wee like 250,000 so the likelihood of bumping into a relative of Bjork is fairly high I suppose. I was lucky that work paid for the trip but beer at £5 a go is not exactly cheap.

haha i saw a great doc abt a man who hitch-hiked round iceland in the freezing rain courtesy insane supa-drunk viking mentalists => a high point wz where he tried to eat icelandic junk food viz half a sheep's head on a small polystyrene tray num num

mark s, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw this too! And so did my mum! We were both fairly horrified. I steered clear of the sheep heads when I was there.

Watch the paper for specials on Icelandair--they often offer cheap combo trips to Reykjavik and somewhere else--a year or so ago Lisa & I went to Reykjavik and Amsterdam for something like $280 apiece round- trip.

Douglas, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Go rollerblading.

Graham, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never been on a real vacation in my life! I'm trying to figure out where to go (by myself) too. Amsterdam? Thailand? I've gotta go somewhere.

Sean, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean, either be a drugs tourist or a sex tourist, it seems terribly greedy and self-indulgent to want to be both.

Emma, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, you can do the whole sex and drugs tourism in one go! The two go hand in hand after all

Reykjavik I'm still not sure I'll have the money for. But if I do maybe I can engineer a stop through London to annoy you ILM/ILE peeps again. (This time I'll give more than 45 min notice before the pub meetup)

geeta, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, there's always LA.

Arthur, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You should go to BILLERICA! Hahahahahaha!

Dan Perry, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw yeah! Or "Berlin, Massachusetts" (call it Ber-LIN around the locals and they'll have your head; it's BERL-in in the boonies out there - don't tell them 'bout no Germany, they'll kick yer ass - "You one of them city folk? Or - (suspiciously) one of them Euro-peans?")

geeta, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and don't go looking for Thames St in Newport by asking for "tims street" it's THAIMS thankyouverymuch. (geeta don't go to Newport)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's like Houston St. in NYC, which is pronounced "HOW-ston" instead of "HUE-ston".

Dan Perry, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Go to Thailand, in particular a little island called Ko Tao, where you can stay in a cabin for about 3 pounds a night, and it's absolutely beautiful. Mind you , don't go mad before you leave with your money or you'll run out very soon after you get back, oops :o(

chris, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, cheap and cheerful? How about a cardboard box;>? Really, you could try going to France, India or Italy. (It's not as expensive as you'd think! If you're a student, go through a student travel agency. I've done it regularly, and there are great deals available. If you're in NYC, already, try STA Travel (any location.)

Nichole Graham, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

either be a drugs tourist or a sex tourist

A friend of mine went to Thailand and said gorgeous 20-year-old boys practically throw themselves into your arms when you walk down certain streets. I asked if they were just hustling you for money, and he said yes, but only like 5 bucks. I'm not some old troll who needs to pay for sex (neither is my friend), but if they're that young and cute, and it's that little money, I would seriously be tempted. Of course, this would NOT be the primary reason I'd be going to Thailand.

if you want to go somewhere warm and where your US dollar goes an extraordinarily long way, i reccomend vancouver. lovely city, lots to do, nice parks and good bars. hippies, but you can kill them. it's legal.

Dave M., Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Skem.

Matt, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It may well be an utterly horrific post-apocalyptic wasteland, but it's always "a bit entertaining".
