Last night I stuck a free HMV playlist CD into my discman when I went to brave the Forest Gate streets and go to the cash machine. It was indie. I found by about the second song I was feeling immensely gloomy so I flicked ahead a track. The next track seemed horrible too. I turned it off.

It now occurs to me that I am one of those people who says of all guitar music "oh it's depressing turn it off". Well not quite yet, but it all seems depressing. My point is, is it possible to become addicted to uplifting music? I can't think of listening to something that wouldn't make me want to dance.

Does this happen any of you with films or books? Is all guitar music depressing? Should I stop this or just revel in my voracious appetite for the music I am listening to. This thread is so asking for feel the vibe mockery but anyway.

Not all music with guitars in it is depressing. Not at all. Essentially, I find the music I listen to uplifting.

What was on the CD Ronan? If it was Starsailor et al. then I can fully understand you finding it depressing.

Oh it was a fairly grim collection. Names I remember, alkaline trio, josh rouse.

I didn't find indie depressing when I used to listen to it, so what is it that makes it seem so now I've stopped?

If you think the Undertones, Buzzcocks, Rezillos, Monkees, T.Rex and Pulp are all always depressing you are a mentalist.

However, most modern indie guitar music is depressing on many levels. Passionless, witless, lacking imagination, droning, whining crap - how much more depressing do you want, and that's before considering depressing subject matter.

I am often uplifted by other people's misery (eg the third Big Star alb blah blah)

The new Christina Milian single is great! I think she probably fancies me.

Oh jesus I was just listening to a Jon Carter Breezeblock Set thing and it's just ending and My Sweet Lord came on and I realised it must have been recorded the day George Harrison died. I didn't even like the Beatles but this is just too tragic for 10.28 in the morning.
