It's got my brother's first ever published comics work in! Go and buy it! (He writes a five-page "Terror Tale")

Tom, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The regular stories in 2000AD currently seem to be a load of utter rub so hopefully he'll get more gigs off them.

Tom, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yay al

mitch lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

erm is there not a problem with the title of this comic these days? (in 1985 it was like "ooh the dystopian near future *pleasurable shudder*", now it is "ooh two years ago *shudder of baffled indifference*")

mark s, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It still sounds futuristic to me; the '2000s' carry too much conotative weight for the mundane denotation to matter much? Maybe it's just the 'AD'?

Ellie, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh heh that's branding for you.

Tom, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

right then. my annual purchase of 2000AD.

Alan T, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So, Al is now one of Tharg's droids is he?

MarkH, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That reminds me, I found the "occasional series" of portraits of Tharg's droids in my recent excavations -- think i'll scan some in and put em on me website.

Alan T, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

let me guess who's there: Kev O'Neill, Belardinelli, Carlos Ezquerra, Brett Ewins, "Psmith", Ian Gibson, McMahon, Tom Frame???

MarkH, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

def Kev o'neill and t frame. also alan moore! others i forget. i'll be sure to tell you if/when i get that done :-)

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

do you remember when Alan Moore was hiding in the Slop Tanks so Tharg couldn't find him, so he could tell us the inspiration behind his story "Skizz"? (the Slop Tanks being the place where all the coffee which was thrown away whenever Tharg ate a plastic cup was stored, prior to being converted into Plasm Fuel).

MarkH, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really think we have to look much further than 'ET' to find out the 'inspiration' for 'Skizz' - or wuz that the gag?

Congrats Tom's brother.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, yes...I remember someone writing in to Tharg's Nerve Centre saying something to that effect and Tharg replying that Skizz had far more Thrill Power than a mere film.

MarkH, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they were pretty open about the ET inspiration. i mean the whole bloody comic was basically inspired by star wars weren't it, so no prizes for seeing some ET influence. however skizz remains one of the best stories i ever read in 2000AD. burned on my memory is the penultimate episode ending on the centre colour spread. it made me cry. this is true.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, it's greatness was just as much due to Baikie's superb artwork as Moore's writing. Not only the characterisation (Skizz himself, Van Owen the evil police chief, Roxy and her family) but the Birmingham backdrop as well. Baikie didn't do much work for 2000AD apart from that which was a real shame. I only remember one other story he drew...a Judge Dredd one concerning judges being sentenced to 20 years on Titan, where they "sewed up their mouths and noses, adapting their bodies to work in a vacuum."

MarkH, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes good old Jim Baikie. He went on to do a semi-terrible DC series w/ Doug Moench called 'Electric Warrior'.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats to your bro, Tom! It's great to see that opportunity exists for those people with a dark sense of fun....

Is there a site we can see more of his stuff?

Nichole Graham, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, is it actually out now, or on the weekend?

(I am scanning posters as i write this)

Alan T, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its out! Or at least there is a copy of 2000AD resting on the Dad Chair in our living room/lounge (which is posher??). I did not see a huge "by AL EWING SUPERSTAR COMIC WRITxx0R" byline though, or in fact read the comic as I was running very late anyway, chiz chiz.

Sarah, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ta starry. oh, and Jim Baikie also drew The New Statesmen in crisis.

Alan T, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah, it's living room. Lounge is appalling.

Emma, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tharg's Droids. well most of em

Alan T, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"drwaing room", surely.

Graham, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a little affected, unless you live in a mansion or something. Sitting room is a bit of a no-no as well.

Emma, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i always say front room, regardless of the location of the room in question, and it bugs some people (including me on occasion)

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I always say 'front room' too, despite our 'living room' being at the back of the house!!! ARGH!

Sarah, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I have been using front room since I went out with someone whose family called it that. Theirs was at the back too. However I would only the expression with my mates and not in polite company.

Emma, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway, back to 2000AD.

I liked Al's story but was disappointed that he didn't do the art in full Funny Folk stylee.

DV, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fifteen years pass...

Is anybody still reading this and enjoying Grey Suit by Pat Mills?
Am I missing something or has he just become overly stiff. Just wondering if he's supposed to be parodic cos it just seems a bit heavy handed.

Stevolende, Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:03 (eight years ago)

I don't have the upkeep to follow 2000AD by the week here in the states but if I was a megalomaniac billionaire, I would fund a B-movie version of Zombo.
