Were you a spod (or swot) at school? Did you sit at the front of the class?

MarkH, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or did you sit at the back, where those who skive hang out?

Mark all your threads seem to be about your schooldays!! Do you still dress in shorts too? ;)

We have done this before. Obviously I was a total swot and the only time I ever got in trouble was aged about 10 when I was sent to stand under the clock in the corridor (yes this was a feeble punishment) because I got my poetry book back with my homework marked and I'd got a lower mark than my then arch rival Alexei who made gloating gestures so I smacked him over the head with the book on the way back to my desk. Sadly the punishment taught me nothing and I still react violently in such situations.

For me, it depended on the subject. I was a total swot in Geography and German, which I liked, and the complete opposite in Maths, which I loathed (for much of the time). In Geography, a kid called Tony and I sat at the same two desks at the front of the class for about four years. In Maths, however, there was a row of three of us at the back who used to pass each other notes in a little notebook.

Tom, for the record there are 8 threads in the School category, none of them started by me (2 by Ally, 1 by sundar, 1 by N., 1 by Petra, 1 by anthony, 1 by Ned and 1 by Gareth!).

i've always been shit at actual swotting/revising for exams -- i just never got the hang of it, and don't have the self discipline to put in the time. BUT, i was a swot/spod. i always did the work, i didn't get in much trouble, i ENJOYED learning (maths and science at least), i could string a sentence together, i felt bad for not finishing homework (twat). i can only remember getting in trouble a few times.

I was preceived as a swot...but really I wasn't putting any effort into my homework. Worst of both worlds.

The only times I can think of when I wasn't sitting at the back were when I was thrown out of class.

"Swotting away for teacher like a total SPAZMO?!"
