i know a girl who was (is still?) in the eddie stobart fan club. and went up to a stobart event in carlisle. there are many stobarts on the road, and people count them and stuff. it is popular apparently. there is also norbert dentrassangle, prestons of potto, and the ripponden fudge lorries.

Eddie Spotting = ratings. Celebrity Eddie Spotters include William Hague and Jools Holland.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And Meachers of Southampton! We counted those, and Eddie Stobarts.

Each lorry has got a different girls name on the front and you can get a book that lists them all. Some people try and see them all and break into Mr Stobarts yards to try and see some that are not on the roads, then they get caught and the police get involved.

Adrian Mole was into this in 'The Cappucino Years'. There is an Eddie Stobart biography or businessography or something, is that where the names are listed?

PJ Miller, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does anyone else suspect that the people into this are extremely pleased with their wackiness and sophisticated sense of irony?

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

William Hague has a sense of irony?

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

post-ironic sincerity, surely.

sophisticated sense of irony???

My mate Wayne used to be (still is?) a member of the Eddie Stoabrt fanclub, & he just collect the numbers. You get books of the numbers to underline - just like train spotting. (& plane spotting - he's one of the Kalamata 14)

David, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wasn't trying to imply that Stobart fans have a sophisticated sense of irony, I was trying to suggest that they might think they have, and feel pleased with themselves. Perhaps I'm wrong, and they are an even duller bunch than trainspotters, I don't know.

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Perhaps Eddie Stobart fans fall into both groups - its certainly good marketing of the part of ES themselves.

three years pass...
Celebrity Eddie Spotters also include The Wurzels who did a song called I WANT TO BE AN EDDIE STOBART DRIVER which got into the UK Top 100 about 10 years ago.
Do a google search for the song and you may find it. It may be on iTunes or something similar

Stobarts are well known outside the transport industry, but as far as I can tell don't have a very good reputation inside it.

(having said that, my own view of the road haulage industry is rather limited and one-sided)

I think Jools Holland made up the whole Eddie Stobart thing. BITD the drivers always wore shirts & ties (not sure if they still do) & this impressed his sense of style.

The Wurzels were around as lately as 10 years ago?!

JTS (JTS), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

What do you mean, they're still around! Goldarnit!!!

The one and only time I have ever hitch-hiked (to Glastonbury from Glasgow), our very first lift was in an Eddie Stobart lorry. People were stupidly impressed by this, apparently they aren't supposed to pick up hitch-hikers according to our nice be-shirted-and-be-tied driver, who told us to hide in the back of his cabin in case anyone spotted us and grassed him up to teh authorities.
