i believe that's what it is called, and it was yesterday. How did i live to be 30 with this word/ day never entering my consciousness? i think it's kind of f***ed that i had never heard of it 'til yesterday.

for people clueless (as I was) it is a holiday to remember the abolition of slavery in the US, and june 19 was the day in 1865 when Union solders arrived in Galveston TX and announced the (belated) news of the end of the civil war and the emancipation proclamation. more history

where do you live Ron? I am also surprised you have never heard of this. unless you're a damn yankee. Are you a damn yankee ron?

I only heard about this as a holiday/tradition a few years back, thanks to the publishing of the never-completed novel by Ralph Ellison. I'm not a damnyankee per se but I've also never lived in Texas.

in defense of those poor souls who don't live in Texas I do think it's a Texan holiday in nature.

it is big stuff in denver as well but it seems mainly to be a big street party kinda like cinqo de maio, an excuse to cruise.

Don't feel bad, Ron. It's news to me! Guess that makes me a dam* Yankee.
