Summer solstice

It's midsummer's day today. Pagans and Wiccans see it as a day of re-birth, timeto cast off things that have been worrying you and start afresh.

What are you going to leave behind? Go on, cleanse yourselves.

Anna, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New today is the first day of the etc etc answers

anthony, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My toenails need cutting.

This isn't the kind of answer you're looking for, is it?

Graham, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the big brother house

spany stinky spencer, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Spany is a grebt new insult! I am leaving nothing behind I'm afraid.

Emma, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not finishing my book (actually this is genuinely quite a plausible moment to be claiming this)

mark s, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

London, just for the weekend, I'm going surfing in St Ives.

Claire, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

see the hippies go crazy, man!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/england/newsid_2057000/2057440.stm

hm i just want to sort my sorry life out full stop. i have made a start.

katie, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

England.

And knee-jerk grumbling abt Pagan/Wiccan/New Age blahblah hogwash.

Andrew L, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to leave laziness behind. And my job.

jel --, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why St Ives? the surf there's rubbish

Matt, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Claire: grrr. i was gonna be doing that too. off to newquay to watch surf girls. rowr! erm, that's not meant to be a chat up line -- that really was my plan. a couple other of my (girl) friends were going to be surfing too, but the B&Bs were all full.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd also like to stop feeling vaguely pissed off all the time.

jel --, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am leaving behind the age of 20, embarking on the age of 21 and my lifes a ruin. BUT BUT BUT my co-workers got me AFRO KENS!!!! They are grebt!!! (Even if they DO want to take me to Waxy O'Connors after work because the interior is 'a bit Lord of the Rings'????)

Sarah, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are you really only 21? I thought yours was a faux youthfulness.

blimey.

DV, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is true, she's only 21 - we know cos we cut off her leg and counted the rings (crappy joke courtesy Mr P. Baran).

Emma, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would love with all my heart and soul to be going out clubbing tonight, meet my friends, get in for free, dance all night, get the nightbus home as it's getting bright at 5 or so and then sit in the park near my house till 9 or so. Perfect.

Ronan, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean cos it's the longest night of the year, if that seems out of the blue. And swear at me if I use the word "clubbing" again ever.

Ronan, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah! Midsummer joy! We'll be able to watch the midnight drizzle in full daylight!

Gordon, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

football. Cricket's the game now!

Julio Desouza, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Feel ths Solstice Vibe.

Emma, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am clearly leaving behind the ability to spell simple words.

Emma, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, the Radical Faeries have a wild, wild party for the Solstices... maybe I'll go. Everyone's naked!

Sean, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish I could feel the solstice vibe. In Forest Gate there is no vibe, merely a Turkish shop full of beer.

Alternative fantasy: I am 15, I have friends around here, I go drinking on Wanstead Flats.

Ronan, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Solstice in Chicago = time for all-night overstimulating can't-move Summer Solstice party at Museum of Contemporary Art. Very very odd event.

nabisco%%, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of Radical Faeries, how 'bout those Cockettes?

http://grandelusion.com/images/photos/luminous_lg.jpg< p>I want to leave my sunburn behind so I can go back to the beach this weekend.

Arthur, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck this solstice noise.i hate it. take me home.*

*drunk

Dave M., Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Cockettes for me right this second, but I was listening to the Screamers earlier tonight. RIP, Mr. du Plenti.

I shall leave behind certain negative thoughts that had been quietly preying on my mind for a while. No need to go into detail here.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Leaving behind the previous issues that used to frustrate me. Involved parties will just have to look after themselves, for a change.

Nichole Graham, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall leave behind certain negative thoughts that had been quietly preying on my mind for a while.

Very good idea; I'd like to do the same.

In the meantime, as of last night I seem to have put aside my anger regarding an unrequited crush. I saw the guy when I went out; I wasn't inclined to talk to him but could wish him well.

j.lu, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just came back from a parade that would set the mainstream acceptance of hippies back 50 years. (The Fremont Solstice parade in seattle)

p ictures from last year's...

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

queenoftheharpies, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you for more visual horrors, Brian.

Jaq, Thursday, 21 June 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'll sacrifice some basil to make pesto.

Turned 41, got my daughter's birth certificate in an email, going out to dinner, then home to watch the results show of "So You Think You Can Dance." OH YEAH.

Happy birthday!

Jaq, Thursday, 21 June 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

I actually went on the air at 1:06 CDT and announced "The summer solstice has finally passed," and then went straight into the Jim Rome show.

mookieproof, Saturday, 22 June 2013 10:27 (twelve years ago)

First, for a couple of days the length of the day is going to stay basically static. Then it will slowly trickle toward darkness. The shrinking doesn't really get a move on until the end of August.

Aimless, Saturday, 22 June 2013 17:24 (twelve years ago)

tokyo rosemary, Monday, 20 June 2016 23:13 (nine years ago)

Quito going through its winter solstice. Amount of daylight: 12h, 6m, 35s

They'll get their daylight back in December for the summer solstice: 12h, 8m, 15s.

You know, speaking of Quito, they always say that Chimborazo is the closest point on Earth to the Sun.

But what they don't mention is that at night, it's the furthest from the Sun.

The "W" and Odie Trail (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 21 June 2025 04:21 (eleven months ago)

I actually said something to that effect yesterday. I don't hate summer but I hate the fact that it gets light out at 4:30am and the sun doesn't set until almost 10 right now in the UK. It fucks up my circadian rhythm so badly so I'm very happy that the days only get shorter now.
