Eh? Hey, nobody ranked the squad and we went down fighting, could have been much worse. Results to build on! :-)

I've just spent 90 minutes cheering the Germans. Jeez....

Coming tomorrow: "TAKE THAT YOU SENEGALESE FUCKS!!!"

I attempted to parse this thread question and was filled with fear over a misplaced comma.

I caught the first half before work. It seems to me that we played better than them—that is, we had the ball most of the time and had more shots on goal—but we still lost (it sounds like. what was it, 1-0?). I was very impressed with one of our defenders, name escapes me, black guy, Sonne or something like that? Anyway it was fun to watch, which surprised me because usually I think soccer is kind of boring. I guess any kind of emotional investment helps, no matter how oblique.

I've an awful feeling about the German side. They've got that 1990 Argentina 'crap team really, but held together and propelled into the final on the bac of one man performance' feel about them.

Curses. Oliver Kahn must die.

Sanneh I think you mean, he was probably man of the match, absolutely everywhere, but not the man to finish off those headers.

The US needed to convert one of the first half chances - it became difficult once Germany went ahead as they closed the space that the US had been exploiting so well in the first half. Also Jeremies coming on to shadow Reyna didn't help.

If they'd have got their noses in front, I think they'd have got more on the break, given their pace. Shame.

Nathan Barley, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oliver Kahn saved them really (and the ref/assitant who didn't see the handball, it wasn't inetentional but the ball would've got in so he should've ahd a penalty). For once a European team holds on till the very end.

Let's go South Korea!

Yikes, I saw that part. 1/2 the ball was over the line already and it just kind of lightly bonks the German defender on the hand and bounces away. Tough. Emma came upstairs just after and I'm kind of passionately describing this (very Red Sockian!) play, to her sleepy bemusement, and my roomie tells me to keep it the fuck down he's trying to sleep. Well close your door then, guy.

I was watching the US match with a german work colleague (had a 'world cup' breakfast!). He was just shaking his head at my suggestion that YES!THAT WAS A BLOODY PENALTY.

But it's always like this with Germany. This is the worst german team but you know, they are just really good at tournament play. I really hope spain stop brazil.

Coming back from Homelands I remember being completely off my tits and I was spouting football cliches, one I remember was "YOU CAN'T WRITE THEM OFF, THE GERMANS, NOT SO MUCH MEN AS FOOTBALL PLAYING MACHINES". Jesus I laughed so much, it was a great day.
