OK what was really obvious watching it time is that the hook is the idea of the perfect loving family (as fashioned by Vito) and that the target is the family that got totally fucked up (as created by Michael), but that the movie says that the first CAUSED the second. The moment of disaster — the road taken to grisly tragedy — is nothing Michael does, but rather when Vito agrees to help the widow who is his wife's friend to keep from being thrown out of her flat, and doesn't use harsh or vicious threatening tactics at all, which seems noble, except when the landlord — a very komikal figure — realises and runs in and grovels, Vito just lets the scene play out, becaue it's funny, instead of putting things right and not having fun at this frightened greedy idiot's expense.

Goodfellas is a very good comparison, where the choice is finally made (and not outside of the family unit) to stick with the family instead of The Family.
