Thank you. My horrified brain had somehow managed to block all memory of Chimp & Frog, but it's all come rushing back now. Thanks again.

I keep getting alt-right and other stupid shit recommendations and I've seen other people getting them. Is everyone getting this crap? How am I getting this stuff?

It's always something like "Milo DESTROYS a feminist" (did all that stuff start with Hitchslap videos?) or "SJW fail compilation".

One of my latest recommendations is "Bill Hicks Destroys the Illuminati".

I don't create youtube videos, but do you tag videos? Are they using every keyword to make sure everyone sees these? If so wouldn't there be all sorts of other propaganda videos in my recommendations?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 31 July 2016 09:30 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I get those for some reason though all I look at on yt is music stuff and game glitches for cheap lols. There's always some knobhead calling himself the amazing atheist on the side bar (or whatever it's called) and it irks me. I only signed up for yt way back so I could make private playlists, I wish it gave you more options for content. Namely, I'd love to be able to hide comments on every video and to make sure MRA/alt-right shit gets filtered out of my recommendations.

social justice youtuber is baffled that sexual orientations are based on sex and that lesbians aren't generally into penises; encourages them to 'unlearn their prejudices'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X-PgHSZh6U

(tbf as strongly as I disagree with her arguments, she definitely doesn't deserve the torrent of hate comments beneath the video)

memories of a cruller (unregistered), Sunday, 18 December 2016 02:08 (seven years ago) link

social justice youtuber deserves some slack, being both young and in a difficult demographic in which to find a sexual partner.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Sunday, 18 December 2016 02:28 (seven years ago) link

I agree with you to a point -- it's likely that a lot of the rejection she's faced has been tinged with overt hatred (rather than a simple lack of interest/attraction) and that her experiences with dating have been more fraught than most people's. but I think I can empathize with her experiences even as I acknowledge that her rhetoric comes uncomfortably close to dismissing other people's sexual boundaries/autonomy to the point of defeating whatever positive message she's trying to convey (as an admittedly well meaning 20-something activist).

memories of a cruller (unregistered), Sunday, 18 December 2016 03:45 (seven years ago) link

social justice youtuber is trying to work difficult things out, while trying to sound knowing and self-assured, in the face of what must feel like a rejection of her personhood, as opposed to autonomous and legitimate choices made by others regarding their sexual orientation. the fact that the arguments she uses have an ulterior element of special pleading for the world to not just recognize her needs, but fill them, is probably is masked by the depth of those same desires for acceptance.

Or so I'm guessing.

for what it's worth, Riley Dennis is a regular contributor to Everyday Feminism (which published that particular video), so she really should be held to a higher standard than the average self-made youtube soapboxer. I'm not sure if it's the dodgiest piece I've seen on a feminist site, but it's definitely up there.

memories of a cruller (unregistered), Sunday, 18 December 2016 16:28 (seven years ago) link

also fwiw the worst all-around youtuber is Onision (aka OnisionSpeaks, aka UhOhBro, whose achievements include soliciting photos of underage girls so he can rate them on youtube, publicly calling out his exes as sluts, bragging about cheating on his wife with her girlfriend, mocking suicidal abuse victims, filming his girlfriend having a mental breakdown, uploading seemingly dozens of body shaming 'reaction' videos, killing his pet tortoise, jumping on the trypophobia bandwagon about 3 years too late, and so on, and so on (though his biggest claim to fame is still dancing in a banana suit in 2009). I'm pretty sure he's a clinical sociopath and future lifetime incarceree, and I'm not proud of myself for finding him so fascinating.

memories of a cruller (unregistered), Sunday, 18 December 2016 16:52 (seven years ago) link

My recommendations are being taken over by middle age grouchy guy comedians who I'm quite fond of but I'm sick of being bombarded by them. I used to refrain from clicking "not interested" because I'm fond enough of them but now I'm too sick of it.
But Family Guy recommendations still keep coming back eventually. Fuck off.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 30 December 2016 16:38 (seven years ago) link

There are so many accounts that isolate Louis CK bits into little videos for easy views. Same with Bill Burr. I'm not sure why they're flooding my recommendations.

Evan, Friday, 30 December 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

Perhaps if I watch more dog and cat videos I can steer things a bit.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 30 December 2016 17:44 (seven years ago) link

Maybe there's some angry guys working at youtube who're influencing things.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 30 December 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

ha ha, i'm guessing none of you folks like videogames. i had to install custom code in my browser to disable youtube's recommendation engine because it's being gamed so hard by fascists. i watch a metroid speedrun and all of a sudden it's giving all sorts of videos about why women are horrible. at the same time google's modus operandi is apparently to become more and more intrusive into its users lives, apparently completely blind to the fact that its algorithms are a profoundly effective method for spreading hatred or that there might be something, uh, wrong with its algorithms at all.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Tuesday, 3 January 2017 15:26 (seven years ago) link

I've got a NowTV streaming box and somehow the YouTube app is far more varied with its recommendations and better reflects what I've been watching than youtube on a computer.

I think something worse than Google is going on, I just wonder when it's going to be fixed or when other groups will learn to do whatever the anti-feminists are doing.

That custom code sounds good because I really miss youtube's older recommendation habits, but I'm shit with computers. It's as if they wanted to narrow down everyone's world. How on earth is the current model going to benefit them or big businesses?

I watch some videogame stuff.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 15:49 (seven years ago) link

I've watched a share of Metroid speedruns myself and I'm not necessarily having the same problem. However the men's rights anti-feminazi anti-SJW content does appeal to certain demographics that might also be fans of grinding single player games in the rooms for hours and hours. Not that it would be fair to assume that of anyone by default.

Evan, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 15:51 (seven years ago) link

hell, maybe it's not the metroid. that's what kills me- there's no fucking transparency, i don't ever know why it's suddenly decided i'm into fascism. today it doesn't think i'm a fascist and is recommending me a noam chomsky video. and i probably don't even notice being recommended a noam chomsky video because it doesn't bother me, even though i'm still not going to watch it. because i don't watch a lot of political shit on youtube. why is it recommending me a noam chomsky video? i don't know. i look at my history and it's got "giant bat-eating centipede". maybe that's why. maybe it's the video of ned doheny's "get it up for love". who can tell?

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Tuesday, 3 January 2017 16:34 (seven years ago) link

"It's as if they wanted to narrow down everyone's world. How on earth is the current model going to benefit them or big businesses?"

I was referring to google/youtube here, should have noted. You'd think they'd show me more film and music stuff which might actually make me buy more things.

Now that I've mostly got rid of the grouchy guy comedy, I'm left with mostly chat show stuff, mixtures of comedy, Ted talks, Mark Kermode, Zero Punctuation and Big Think. I consider it a success when I get a Trailers From Hell recommendation because I've watched loads of them. I've never subscribed to anything, maybe I should start and it might influence my recommendations.

I get that Noam Chomsky stuff too.

for the past couple months the yt algorithm has been recommending me this clown who calls himself THE STREET CONSERVATIVE (formerly known as THE MASCULINE SEQUITUR). afaict his shtick is that he's an alpha MRA/Trumpy who speaks bitter truths to intellectually inferior MRAs/Trumpies:

The best way to describe The Angryman is a force of nature. Since 2015 Angryman hit the public square on YouTube and various social media platforms and has been growing ever since. A well-traveled man with a wide diversity of life experiences, The Angryman has dedicated himself to helping frustrated men all of the globe achieve their goals and become better, stronger men. As a content creator and influencer, The Angryman has help to change dozens of lives. Regardless of how much his celebrity grows he continues to remain humble and stay the course.
His mission to build a platform for male media has afforded him the privilege of rubbing elbows with some of the biggest names in the Manosphere. It’s also afforded him quite a few enemies. Either way, hate him or love him, The Angryman here to stay.

he mostly just sits in his car smoking cigars and livestreaming his rants, and he hasa surprisingly wide range of merch for a small youtuber. sadly he's been forced to put the MRA stuff on the back burner in order to deliver true facts about the stolen election. like an idiot I'll click on one of his streams to rubberneck from time to time, which only encourages the algorithm to recommend more of his content :-/
