Sorry kids I don't do the whole HTML thing. What do you people think about this. I'm sort of ashamed to be from Arkansas but that's probably justified.

"83 percent of young Britons want to quit the country"

So did I, once. I am more objective now. I have more hope for this country than I can ever remember having.

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, I can't say I've ever wanted to quit Britain.

I like living here. I always vote.

jel --, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All job offers in New York gratefully accepted.

Although I'd miss Britain. On the whole I love a lot of things about our island, a whole wide range taking northern mill towns and out of season south coast resorts, Marmite, Morrissey, Mary Quant, the British Museum and Tate Modern and works within both, 'Abigail's Party' and Monty Python and Virginia Wolfe, salad cream, Shropshire, Shakespeare, drum 'n' bass. I could go on.

BUT

In other countries when faced with a crowd of football fans, cross of St George draped around sunburned shoulders, shouting 'let's go fucking mental!' I have pretended to others that I am from Ireland or Canada.

Anna, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Morrissey

Just come to LA. He lives here and it seems like every other person is a fan.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But in LA I would feel small and pale and clumsy and too British I suppose.

(Also, no salad cream!)

Anna, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(NB: I am quite small with very fair skin, but I don't usually see this as a bad thing, but bronzed California babes put the fear of God into me. Actually, same goes for the ones in Miami. I think I'm just working on regional stereotypes here Ned. Sorry.)

Anna, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Each time I return to Engald from abroad the country seems a little more run down than when I went away; its streets a little shabbier; its railway carriages and restaurants a little dingier; the editorial pretensions of its newspapers a little emptier; and the vainglorious rhetoric of its politicians a little more fatuous.

Malcolm Muggeridge 'England whose England' 1963

I left in 1995. Muggeridge is still on the money.

stevo, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mysterious land 'Engald' = England

stevo, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread should be good trollbait. Come on then!

DG, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As I told you in a private mail, Stevo, I would have left the UK if I had the opportunity in 1995/96. But not now.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i suppose young britons would be the people who would know, but i quite liked england when i visited and would move there in a second if i was offered a job there after graduation. also my sister lives in islington and thinks it's fantastic. i don't understand what's so great about america, really.

Dave M., Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Britain (i. e. the United Kingdom) must be the only country in the world where its flag is associated with racist thugs more than anything else... and for most Britons, a bonus: England must be the only country in the world where its flag is associated with football thugs more than anything else...

Tim Bateman, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Redbridge council speaks!

DG, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Flag associated with racist thugs versus flag associated with IRA, FITE.

Ronan, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is the Irish tricolore really all that associated with the IRA?

RickyT, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Britain (i. e. the United Kingdom) must be the only country in the world where its flag is associated with racist thugs more than anything else.

As opposed to those southern U.S. states that are still clinging to the Confederate flag?

j.lu, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No but it's definitely as associated with them as the Union Jack is with thugs etc.

It's not so bad anymore I suppose but when the IRA were more active the only time you ever saw the flag was on the news on some mural or something. And outside of schools the Irish language is mostly a strong strong republican thing which is a little saddening. This is backed up by organisations like Cumann na Bhfiann having members arrested for gun running and such.

Ronan, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But in LA I would feel small and pale and clumsy and too British I suppose.

Bah, nonsense. There are about 100,000 ex-pats around LA anyway, at last count. To heck with regional stereotypes! Find your own way!

(Also, no salad cream!)

Trust me, this is a benefit.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yea the Confederate flag has got it bad. Of course the people who fly it down here ARE racist so I guess it works for them. I'm talking about individuals-not states, I think states with the flag have a different perspective on history and are trying to keep the redneck vote. Jesus, the South is a whole other thread. I guess I'm the only one from the South here.

WHAT'S SALAD CREAM?!?!

Lindsey B, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You so don't want to know. Imagine a mayonaise for salads.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lindsey there are several Southerners here, including myself. (Samantha Dead Girl is one;;;;;;)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm married to a Southerner. (BTW, "salad creme" = Miracle Whip).

Britain (i. e. the United Kingdom) must be the only country in the world where its flag is associated with racist thugs more than anything else...

Actually, I associate waving the American flag with racist thugs. My life became a paranoid living hell after 9/11 for pretty much the opposite reasons of everyone else in the country.

Dan Perry, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone else = anyone who doesn't have good reason to fear racist reaction?

Sterling Clover, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Sterl. I mean, obviously I'm not the only person who felt that way; my wife and I used to have daily conversations about it.

Dan Perry, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"two out of three young americans are too scared to say they're ashamed to be american, so they wave flags instead." people tend to be either scarily fanatic or completely disaffected, but the latter group is very quiet lately....

Maria, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

why are there so few young british ILXors, and how do we go about training a few more up? this saturday will be my 2nd anniversary here, and I can't think of a single young (sub-25) british poster who's joined since then.
