Ned Raggett: Ned or Raggett?

Raggett is reminiscent of being "ragged", or "raggo", as we used to say in our school, a slang term for being "played" or "cut". So it wins.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like calling ppl I 'know' by their surname, or anyone calling me by my surname. It smacks of English public schools - 'Raggett minor'! - or boot camp or something.

Why is it that 'Lou' (Reed) and 'Miles' (Davis) don't sound (too) silly, but you'd never call Bowie 'David'?

Andrew L, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because there are loads of Davids around, but far fewer Lous and Mileses. It shows what a great figure he was that in the context of basketball, one can get away with just saying 'Michael'.

And there are people in our circle who do call me Skidmore, because there is another Martin, predating or prioritised above* me with these friends.

*Not a complaint: the main person who calls me Skidmore used to live with the other Martin. And she is rather public school.

Martin Skidmore, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I realised that was the answer as I soon as posted my stoopid question.

Don't fancy Boredoms then Martin?

Andrew L, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He said he prefered Ned

I usto be called by my middle name cos there was another victor in class until like 4th or 5th grade. And then i was talking to some people that knew from them and kinda drifted away adn they still call me by the middle name. Feking hilarious

Chupa-Cabras, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Ned indeed, it being my name. And it's not short for anything either in my case (it is a nickname by original derivation, but 'Ned' itself is the name on my birth certificate and all).

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned is an excellent name. Ned. That's just simple and great.

Lindsey B, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

short for Nedwick?

gabe, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nesbitt, Neduardo...more seriously, Ed and Edward -- it involves a shift of the 'n' sound ('mine Ed' to 'my Ned' -- ref. 'nuncle' as an equivalent to uncle, which Tolkien fans might recognize).

And thanks, Lindsey. :-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to have a great-nuncle Ned, who was quite possibly the coolest guy I ever knew. He used to sneak us ciggies and look after us when we were drunk (and afraid to go home). So ALL Ned's are pretty darn cool in my book :-)

Rhia, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett is neither Ned nor Raggett -- discuss amongst yaselves.

Michael Daddino, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's clearly more than the sum of his parts.

Graham, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(even if those parts are being thought of cf. members of Atomic Kitten)

Graham, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

WELL, Graham. I do like your story, Rhia. :-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Ned is both....and neither. Just chew on that for a while, why don't you?;>

Nichole Graham, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hanle y has answered: NED IS NEBBYBONES!!!

Ron, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Heavens!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't call David Bowie "Bowie" to his face cos it isn't his name. (On a similar tip Paul Daniels will always be Ted to me).

Pete, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's your middle name, Ned? Maybe we'll call you that.

Christine "Green Leafy" Indigo, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Andrew. But I like Ned better. :-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha, Sundar is also a nickname/truncation by derivation but is what appears on my birth certificate. If only my name were Sundararaman Subramanian I'd surely have a lock on the longest-ILx-name prize.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eight years pass...

On the Roadfood eating tour I was on this past weekend, one of the participants looked so much like Ned that I'm still not sure it wasn't some elaborate level designed to mess with my head. I didn't have the nerve to say "can I take your picture? I need photographic evidence of your existence to show the rest of the internet." But I did get some blurry shots of him riding a mechanical bull at the NM State Fair -- coming soon to this space.

What color was his tie?

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

No tie, but I'm sure that was just to ease my suspicions.

Surprisingly stringy.

(¬_¬) (Nicole), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

OK, so it was Ned + 40 lbs. judging from his WDYLL photos, but the resemblance was still uncanny.

Funny how the only thing he's got resembling Ned is long hair and a zest for life.
