Stair Hole in LULworth

Just the name Lulworth makes me crack up every time.

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Monday, 23 November 2009 14:48 (fourteen years ago) link

I've done the walk over the hill from Lulworth to see Durdle Door, only to get there so see two noisy twats on jet skis just zooming in and out of it for the whole time we were there. So annoying.

x-post WOW THAT IS AN AWESOME ONE - looks like a Yes album cover. I love when they have trees and things on them.

Durdle Door, Lulworth, Chesil Bank and Portland Bill make that whole bit of Dorset completely brilliant.

Wait! Lulworth appears to be near(ish) (at least on the other side of the penninsula from) Minehead. Do you think we can drive over while we are at ATP?

(or are distances in that part of the country further than they appear?)

Do they have, erm, ROADS in Dorset? Is it really that uncivilised? I've never been further West than Exeter!

(OK, not counting family holidays in Cornwall as a kid, but that was a long long time ago, we didn't even have the M25 in London then)

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Monday, 23 November 2009 15:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I really loved doing O-level Geography. I might need to start a Roche Moutonee thread when I get home as a counterpoint.

xpost I'm not thinking of the quality of the surface but if you get a single lane twisty A road it can slow you right down and you have to factor that into estimates of how long it takes to get somewhere.

Herman G. Neuname is the first European president (Noodle Vague), Monday, 23 November 2009 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I have just been shouted at by some friends of mine I didn't know were from Dorset for implying that Dorset didn't have roads. IT'S YOUR FAULT.

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Monday, 23 November 2009 15:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Minehead to Lulworth would take about 90 mins or so, then you have to walk for 20-25 minutes to Durdle Door. Round trip would take 5 hours or something?

That French one was Etretat. They went there on Coast.

I am still fuming over Coast leaving our shores and going to France. I was willing to put up with their occasional Irish nonsense but France and Norway is just TOO. MUCH. They can have their own coastal programmes and stop stealing ours.

I lived quite near Etretat for a bit and visited it quite a lot. That was a while ago and I daren't check to see if the arch is still standing - it seems to delicate to survive without my constantly checking up on it. I think there was other stuff to do there too, but to be honest every time I just went and looked at that arch.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 17:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah the one I posted (twice) is in Natural Bridges State Beach, but in spite of the name there's only one intact bridge today. It used to be joined by a larger bridge to the main cliff (visible at the left of both pictures) but that went down in the 1989 earthquake.

So, yeah, Orkney, magical land of sea arches, in fact they had these amazing double sea-arches called gloops or gloups that are caused by collapsed sea caves and they are the best thing ever! I visited all of these and climbed all over them:

OK so I do not even know if the Bullers of Buchan is a sea arch or a gloup (or indeed if the latter is an actual word in Scotland outside Orkney, as it's derivation is Norn not Gaelic) but wow, the Bullers of Buchan. What a rock!

There are all these intensely local words for "holy shit, lookit that thing the sea has done to those rocks" and I have no idea how far phrases like "Geo" and "Gloop" go, or if it would incorrect to just apply non-local terms like "Zawn" or even "Vugga" to things that look like zawns but are in other countries?

Sea arch and stack destroyed by recent weather

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25639777

Rotating prince game (I am using your worlds), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:09 (ten years ago) link

Oh god that's awful. But actually Cornish sea arches are created and destroyed at a phenomenally fast rate: was walking with a native around Porthtowan, pointing out where sea arches had been and were no more. Those waves are *enourmous* at the moment - seen a lot of pictures of waves the size of Pend Men Du basically washing over the tops of Cornish Villages. Pics of Sennen are just freaking scary. They're just going right over the top of harbour walls:

https://twitter.com/Ajax_Hake/status/420247901491953664/photo/1

This one's from Scilly. The thing in the distance, taller than the castle, that looks like a headland? That is a wave.

https://twitter.com/martinhesp/status/419795460644020224/photo/1

Portreath Harbour has been totally fucked:

https://twitter.com/ScottJames1979/status/419217601437655040/photo/1

I can't even tell you how many times I've stood on that bit that's just not there any more. Kinda scared to see what's left of Lamorna harbour, which had had a hole in it for a while. Scared it will be reduced to a pile of rock like St Agnes harbour if this winter goes on like this.

Branwell Bell, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 17:19 (ten years ago) link

Ach, I heard about the sea arch destruction and meant to post it here, but totally forgot.

(Important contribution, I know.)

emil.y, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 17:26 (ten years ago) link

This is not even a sea arch, it is a forty foot wave that looks like a giant white horse leaping over a harbour wall:

http://www.westernmorningnews.co.uk/white-horse-jumping-wall-Astonishing-picture/story-20410232-detail/story.html?000#ixzz2pjft9jqL

(I think this is an acceptable derail for a short time, though I will try to return to sea arches soon.)
