Nicolas Hoult's eyebrows YES YES YES...oh, and his hat,

Hughy is sort of bearable in the first half as the bachelor hedonist, but according to Hollywood conventions guilt sets in very quickly in his brain and afterthat it's nicolas eyebrows and a very tiresome schoolperformance what's supposed to be the film's climax

Hugh plays guitar!!!!!! no no nononono there's no Grant

I thought that was the worst film it has ever been my misfortune to sit through. Where did it all go wrong for Toni Collete?

Woensdag moet ik overdag werken, maar misschien 's avonds? wat ga je doen? oh..DeUs?

Dom: you have been v lucky if that's the worst film you've ever seen. it's not grebt for sure. it has the same awful "Wonder Years" type narrative moment that drives me up the wall, viz: the "At that moment I realised" shit. tho the TV version of Man and Boy had a MUCH funnier moment of the same stripe.

beyond it all, about a boy...and now he's gone

basic cinema reading: voiceover = you are being LIED TO or the speaker = mentalist/unreliable etc

mark s, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Slightly less basic VO reading = the director was crap and the film makes no sense so someone has to narrate and explain the story to you.

Even less basic reading for films with narrators in the last ten years = the lead character is dead. (cf American Beauty)

Hell, you could trace that back to Sunset Boulevard...

Which is why Usual Suspects is a pile of rub. (I know this is a minority opinion -- but the film is in my list of most over-rated films ever.)

Alan T, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine too Alan. 'Usual Suspects' second only to 'Withnail and I' in the overrated stude flick category...

I like the narration on 'Badlands', 'Fight Club' and 'Full Meatl Jacket'. Narration in 'Apocalypse Now' and orig 'Blade Runner', however = rub.

Where did it all go wrong for Toni Collete?

I know! I've never been so disappointed in an actress. It breaks my heart, all the crappy support roles she's taking.

Arthur, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to see it with my mum and dad. I thought it was OK.

PJ Miller, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i really enjoyed the movie, but i'm simple.

keith, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Did Hugh Grant's (character's) father commit suicide?

I haven't read the book, maybe it was dealt with - but everything pointed to it. He flashes on his father in the liquor aisle, he spends Christmas drunk and stoned, cries when he plays his father's song, thematic link with the boy, etc. etc. etc.

Also possible that I'm thinking too much about a movie based on a Nick Hornsby novel.
