Hi everyone.

I don't normally post here much these days, but there's a new Strange Fruit club night launching on 4 July that might interest some of you. Maybe not because of the bands, but because as part of the night The Freelance Hellraiser (the chap behind all those bootlegs) is playing a primetime DJ slot from midnight. Some of you might remember Freelance Hellraiser from the Bootylicious night a while back. He was the one who didn't have songs about pork chops and wasn't wearing a white jumpsuit and 'thimbletron'.

Anyway... the full press release is below. Oh, and RickyT is DJing too. More details (including Pong emulator and mp3s) from www.strange-fruit.co.uk

In the mid-1980s, BBC 2's television programme 'Rockschool' featured mullet-sporting session musicians telling the kids how to use a DX7 and why mastering the Dorian submodes of A sharp minor was better than all that blues. In the future, Rockschool said, keyboards would talk to each other using wires.

That future is now. Strange Fruit is proud to present 'We Flunked Rockschool', a new one-off club night of leftfield noise and danceable electronic pop, dedicated to those people who weren't good enough to graduate from rock-school, but who want to listen to electronic pop, want to dance until dawn, and want to show Top of the Pops how it's done. Two eclectic and enthralling electronic bands are joined by experimental electronic DJs.

Baxendale are Tim, Alex and Senay, a British pop group specialising in smart electro-disco songs for the international youth of last night and the morning after. Having achieved a worldwide legion of fans following the release of their album 'You Will Have Your Revenge' Baxendale have been spending their time touring the world, and perfecting the Pulp-esque wit of their lyrics, the Pet Shop Boys-esque electro-throb of their music, and ensuring singles such as 'An American Friend' and 'Tina Dreams' have sold out within days of release. Their song 'Music For Girls', a celebration of proper pop that might not be cool but remains good to dance to, has become an indie dancefloor anthem, and they're about to release their eagerly-anticipated new single.

With music from fantastic electro DJ Disastronaut, and vocals from Miss Romy Medine (of Lolita Storm and Digital Hardcore) and the aptly-named Ketamine Kerry, Joan Of Ass have all the subtlety of a shotgun blast to the face. Like Peaches on amphetamines, or Chicks On Speed in a brothel, they are filthy, extravangant, and brilliant. They are certainly not for the morally indignacious, uptight or the fragile.

Electronic, cut-up, and screeching, their debut mini-LP features songs about the many uses of cocaine, double penetration, cheating boyfriends and fake debutantes. They take inspiration from the likes of Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Tracy + The Plastics and Peaches, melding harsh and funky electronica with stern vocals, uncompromising lyrics and an anti-cool edge. Their recent performance at the ICA as part of the Sonic Mook Experiment saw them play a wild set to rapt a rapt audience.

Of the band, Sleazenation wrote: "So are new UK trio, Joan of Ass, the filthiest pop group in the world?...In the way they behave, write, and perform, Joan of Ass come on like the cranked-up bastard child of Soft Cell and 2 Live Crew. They're cheeky, visceral, profane and could be just whats needed in a world that persists in stripping the fun and filth from sex and pop music" Expect a show unlike anything you've seen before.

Purveyor of bastard pop, The Freelance Hellraiser is the DJ at the very centre of the recent bootleg craze. Responsible for the critically acclaimed Strokes vs. Christina Aguilera bootleg, The Freelance Hellraiser's live DJ sets see him create incredible bootleg remixes on the fly, mixing, splicing and looping tracks to give worn-out commercial tracks and classics an new edge you could never have imagined. Having DJed all over the world he'll be playing a late-nite blend of the most eclectic and uncool/cool to keep the everyone dancing into the small hours.

Experimental DJ instrumental in Sean McClusky's Sonic Mook Experiment, and responsible for a number of exciting and experimental club nights throughout London and further afield, Disastronaut will be playing an early DJ set of electronic pop-noise and eclectica. Fresh from DJ sets at the ICA in London, and sets in Tokyo, the US and Europe, Distronaut will be setting the mood for Rockschool dropouts as the evening's festivities begin.

The 'We Flunked Rockschool' club takes place on Thursday 4th July at 93 Feet East, 150 Brick Lane, London. Doors open, and the evening begins, at 8pm, running all the way until 2am. Entry costs £7, or just £5 with a flyer, Time Out pass, or any other sort of concession.

i may go to this

gareth, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I was kind of interested aswell. I was going to rain on the parade by saying Freelance Hellraiser plays drum and bass and can't really mix but I'm not sure cos I was a bit drunk when I saw him.

And it was all worth it for Craig David Vs Fischerspooner.

Well, we're trying to do something new. There are loads of Strange Fruit people who are into music other than obvious twee indie, and we're trying to open things up a bit and maybe broaden people's tastes. But we need all the support we can get, so it'd be ace if we can get a decent crowd in, if only to cover 93 Feet East's astronomical hire fee...

Paul, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will come when Baxendale are not playing, a pox on their houses!!!

chris, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone going to this then? i'm vaguely tempted, but it is a school nite and also i have no idea how to get home afterwards...

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SPAM. Sheesh. How many times have I seen this now? Book Joan of Arse, then I might give a monkey chew. I'm not going as I can't afford to waste valuable minutes of my life on Baxendale (although the other stuff looks good). But £7 *bah*

Sarah, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also the notion of Strange Fruit 'broadening peoples taste' is the most hilarious thing I have heard EVAH.

Sarah, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would very much like to attend. hope to see peeps there.

Alan T, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hm i shall not be there as prior engagement plus b*xend*le... howevah i'm sure i'll make it along one night! have a top time all you people who are going!

katie, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not going because I fear that Baxendale will throw rocks at my head (at the last Baxengig - which I only went to because my girlfriend's band were also playing - Senay came up to me and said "What did you think NOW THAT YOU DON'T LIKE US ANYMORE!") I think all this came from a message I posted on ILM where I basically said "Baxendale are a band I used to love but now I hate"

jamesmichaelward, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am really curious about baxendale now. i've heard so much about them, yet not actually them. i know i will disappoint you all. again

Alan T, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you are coming, get a flyer from our website at www.strange- fruit.co.uk - it's only £5 then.

And yes, we are trying to broaden people's tastes. This is not an indie disco.

Paul, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hooray for the all neu public service Strange Fruit. Oh educate us!!

I think the fact that Baxenuphilldowndale are playing means that it could never be anything else apart from an indie disco...

Sarah, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to hate Baxendale but now I simply despise them ;o)

chris, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah, what's your problem? You were at Strange Fruit last month, I spoke to you...

Mark C, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
