Taking sides: Tims vs Pauls

On the latest BB3 thread, Tim Hopkins MBE was lamenting the low standard of Tims in popular culture over the last 20 years. My bugbear has always been PAULS. They're awful! All of them. Which is worse?

I have only ever known once nice Paul in real life.

Jades have been extremely rubbish lately.

No one in Scotland is called Tim so Tim is the only Tim I know. I think. What I can't think of is any decent Pauls. So I suppose Tims win by default. No, I mean because Tim is lovely, hem hem.

One of my best friends is a Tim and none are Pauls. I have books by Tims Binding, Mo, Parks and Willocks, and Pauls Auster and Theroux. Musical Tims include Mel And, Buckley, Hardin, Love Lee, Rice, Rose, baland, o Maas. Musical Pauls include Anka, Johnson, McCartney, Oakenfold, Billy, Frankie, Tall, Robeson, Prince (note some of these have the Paul second), Revere & the Raiders, Simon, Van Dyk, Weller. I make that about even in coolness, personally.

Timothy McVeigh was something of a badass, no?

The Ghastly Fop, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oi! wotcher, mate...

Paul, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have had crushes on three boys named Tim while I have never had a crush on a boy named Paul.

rosemary, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My score is 50-50 on Pauls. One dearest friend cancels out several wankers. Rarely met a Tim I didn't despise though (My apologies, Mr Hopkins).

Matt, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's OK, you make my point beautifully. I feel the same way. (Edge Hill people never seemed to like me much anyway, sob).

There have been lots of good, cool footballers called Paul (Madeley Reaney Power Cooper spring to mind immediately) and none called Tim. The list of Tims Sir Martin posted above was almost uniformly disastrous.

I like Tims better but Matts are my favourite, and not just because they can be walked all over. Matt Day especially.

toraneko, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a very good friend called Paul! He is lovely! And I know some other people called Paul who are OK too.I am not sure how they compare to Tims, I think Ourtim is the only Tim I know. Mind you looking at it from a BB perspective you have Timmustgo vs. Paul Clarke in which case Pauls win for sheer comedy value.

Emma, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fair play to you, emma

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, isn't Tim an unpleasant term of sectarian abuse in Scotland?

Tim, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is a form of abuse in some circles but is also claimed by Celtic supporters as a descriptive term too. 'Taigs' is the really offensive one.

Nathan Barley, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Tadhgs I think, presuming it comes from the Irish word for Tim.

Ronan, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why isn't the irish word for tim "tim"? or is this a silly question?

mark s, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some people's perception of Tims is undoubtedly shaped by the complete oaf in Jean Adamson's Topsy and Tim books- Topsy always saves the day whilst Tim is always getting locked in barns/ suggesting they drink bleach.

Richard Jones, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eh I'm not sure Mark, I guess you'd have to ask some Irish language historian or something.

Ronan, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
My long-standing prejudice against Pauls has been vindicated by science!

Why Matts are hotter than Pauls

Sigh.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Really, I think it's all about the Toms as far as standard boy names go.
