Compulsary Schooling until 18!!!

I just read on a website that schooling is compulsary in America up until the age of 18!!! How do you stand it??

In Australia it's compulsory up to the age of 15 but more than 70% of people stay on because they want to, or because they haven't got a job, but not because they have to. There is already a big enough problem here with students who aren't really happy to still be at school but can't get a job, it must be so much worse if the 30% that really want to leave are made to stay.

So, is it horrifying to live with the realisation that you are a prisoner of school until you are 18? Are students really, really disruptive and angry and unhappy and stuff? Does it make you feel powerless and claustrophobic? Does it make you just want to run away and die?

If I'd had a bit more compulsory schooling I might not have spelt compulsory wrong twice.

I remember being a bit bored near the end, but by that time I was already looking forward to college. I took care of the rest of the boredom by reading books in class.

I think the age to which school is compulsory varies by state. Plenty of people don't finish high school with going to prison or whathaveya. 15 or 16 is pretty common.

In any case, schooling is free until grade 12 or age 18-- whichever comes later-- and many school districts provide free instruction in adult education for the "General Equivalence Degree," equal to a basic high school diploma.

School isn't compulsory until the age of 18 - but you have to be educated until that age. So you can stay at home and be taught by your parents by example. It never made me feel claustrophobic.Nor smarter. hah

It doesn't matter, where I live if you drop out before you're 18 the job opportunities are AWFUL. Fast food or the grocery store (for minimum wage and no raises ever, unless you become manager but you have to be 18 for that). Enough adults lost their jobs in the last year that places don't need to hire kids who haven't graduated high school. Frankly I'd rather go to school than be thrown out of the house and work at McDonald's all day.

Yes, I do feel powerful and claustrophobic but I did at 12, 13, 14....
