As in Cambridge, MA: the lovely town where Geeta and I went to school. (I'm sure there are others on the board who went there as well; I just don't know who.)

Everyone list your favorite places in Cambridge (besides the Middle East, natch). I'm going to start things off with a few cheers for The Field and its cozy dark interior.

Inman Square, sweet Inman Square. The S&S Deli, the Cafe China, Jae's, the East Coast Grill, the Midwest Grill... Ah, Inman Square.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lived in Brighton for 6 years, didn't go to Harvard or MIT or anything. But I always enjoyed Harvard Square, TT's.

Chris, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Inman Square is excellent; The Druid is another excellent pub/bar, plus down the street is Dali, one of the best restaurants in town.

I'm somewhat embarrassed by this, but I've never actually been to TT's. Been by there a lot what with going to The Middle East and Man Ray/Campus, but never made it to TT's. I've also got to give props to MILLION YEAR PICNIC and NEW ENGLAND COMICS for providing me with much comic book love.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

can't forget Bartleys Burgers!

Chris, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no TT's Dan! How dare you....I used to work at a porno phone company in Cambridge. Was a billing rep, not an operator.

Chris, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was 14 the pinnacle of my existence was Cafe Avventura in the Garage, strategically located between the plebian herds of downstairs Baby Watson windowshopper types and the "harcore" (as I saw it) of Allston Beat and Newbury Comics. One could sit at the table closest to the balcony that overlooked the up-escalator and just check out girls for hours.

In 1988 the "Cafe A" special was two slices of cheese pizza and a can of Pepsi for two dollars even.

Dali is wonderful; they were also very nice about giving me change for the laundromat across the street. But the best part about living in Cambridge was the Chinese Food Truck by the Law School.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Papa Goose if I recall was the name of that truck, used to eat there on lunch break.

Chris, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't if it that's the truck I mean -- this one was affiliated with the Allston Village Buffet, the driver a lovely man named Jack, they made extrodinarily bitchin' meatballs which they called "Lions' Heads".

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You must take me on a tour of these locations when Terrastock rolls around (oh yeah, I'll be staying at the Hyatt Regency -- yay group rates!).

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you ever make the mistake of going to the Falafel Truck Of Doom that was always hoping to ensnare unwary folks sick of waiting in the Chinese Food Truck? Ugh, I'm getting queasy just remembering that unfortunate day...

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned! The Hyatt is where we had our rehearsal dinner! It's a nice place about a ten-minute walk away from The Middle East and MARY CHUNG (vaguely divey place but mm mmm good food).

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheapo Records

Paul, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't remember the falafel truck of doom. by i do remember the disgusting food court in the marriot.

Chris, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had four meals from the shwarma truck, three good and one...questionable. That meal was my last, and interestingly, was the only time I got a felafel from them.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um ... the Middle East?

I was once accosted by a homeless man somewhere past the People's Republic (going towards the ME). He said I was cute. And I love walking past that club where Little Joe Cook plays; the stories I've heard make me smile. And The Plough & Stars is THE DEFINITION of "cozy".

Daver, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Moodys Falafel palace!! Right down the street from the Middle East Twisted Village records in Harvard Square

brg30, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Punjabi Dhaba!

Kris, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, the Terrastock folks chose the hotel for precisely that reason about the walking distance. Mary Chung, you say? Recommend me some dishes in particular.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jake and Earl's Barbecue. That weird ice cream shop that makes the Clam Chowder and Cranberry ice cream. Montrose Spa, for sentimental reasons. Out of Town News. Charrette. And for my own, personal madeleine-like nostalgia-inducing experience, the strawberry frappe at Cafe Pamplona. There were other places (the Tasty, the Mug 'n' Muffin), but they are probably Starbucks and Kinko's now.

felicity, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Punjabi Dhaba rulez for cheap and good Indian food (with attitude). And Twisted Village for all yr noise/psych/jazz/electronic needs - the ppl who run it are wicked nice too. oh! and Million Year Picnic is great too for yr underground comix needs, but money always flies out of my pocket when I go. And the Porter Square center on Mass Ave with all the good Asian food stands. And the Garment District/Dollar-a-Pound and Oona's for clothes 'n stuff. 1369, Pamplona for coffee. Rodney's and the basement of Harvard Bookstore for cheap and good used books. Man, I'm moving out of here for good in two weeks and I'm almost getting all misty-eyed...

geeta, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary Chung, you say? Recommend me some dishes in particular.

I took Alasdair and co. there when they played at the ME last year. YOu MUST have either Dun Dun noodles ore Suan La Chow Show - it's not spelled exactly like that, but it's pronounced that way. It's damn good.

I also liked Red Bones in Davis Square, because of the corn bread. There is also a good place near the Back Bay to get southern food and the best corn muffins ever. It does a buffet thing on sunday with a live gospel choir.

Also, I worked at Toscanini's for 3+ years. If you can visit them (on Main st. near central square subway) try one of the following flavors: Cappicino, Grape Nut, Ginger Snap Molasses, Orange Creamsicle, Ginger, Jasmin. Do not try the Guiness ice cream unless you are crazzzzy. Say HI to Gus.

I have this wish to move back to Boston from London, but feel that the main reason I liked it so much was that I had good friends. So I'll probably end up in NY.

marianna, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RickyT, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, did y'all know that ANNA'S TAQUERIA opened up in Porter Square????? MMMMM yummy carnitas burritos flavored with crack!

Dan Perry, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it's been there for awhile, Dan! And there's one in my neighborhood too (Davis Square).

The bar in the Redbones basement rulez!

geeta, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Davis Square = Somerville = not Cambridge, though.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
