The Navy Yard is mostly offices. One of the first tweets I saw about it was some gun nut jibber jabber about it being a gun free zone or something.

OK so I get that this guy had an access pass to the yard but how was he able to bring a gun in? Isn't there airport-style screening at these places?

Some government sites also have on-site parking, so if the driver just shows his ID to the guard, the guard is not going to look in the car trunk to see what was brought in

The mother of Josh Morgan, a wide receiver for the Washington Team-That-Will-Not-Be-Named, was working at the Navy Yard when this all happened. This wouldn't be particularly noteworthy except for that Morgan's mother was also in the Pentagon during the 9/11 attacks and Morgan himself was a junior at Virgina Tech during its campus shooting.

http://swampland.time.com/2013/09/16/exclusive-navy-yard-dropped-its-guard-pentagon-inspector-general-says/#ixzz2f6cD5chr
The audit shows a history of those with criminal records managing to bypass the Navy’s security. Fifty-two “convicted felons received routine unauthorized installation access, placing military personnel, attendants, civilians in installations at an increased security risk,” according to the audit.
The Pentagon inspector general began the audit in September 2012, and in August 2013 posted an update to its website reporting that it was expected to be released within the next 30 days.

seeing as how bimonthly mass shootings are here to stay i'm trying to find all the upsides to them
guns bring people together, as you can see from this livestream of what is going on around the school right now http://kdvr.com/on-air/live-streaming/
also gun sales are major $$$ into the economy... and because the population is smaller after each shooting i guess... our per capita gdp goes up..
:(

watching the helicopter feed of what i presume must now be the procedure for these routine shootings is horrifying.
get shot at in school --> forced to evacuate in a single file line with their hands held up --> all students wrangled into the school's track herded together and patted down by a swat team --> ppl text and tweet --> that's it we're done here, next shooting

DR CommishDecember 13, 2013 at 1:23 pmTo Karen… AND Armed Security. Liberals HATE Guns… but the only way to STOP a Bad Guy with a Gun…. Is a Good Guy with a Gun.The police can simply not be everywhere we might need them. With a “National Response Time” Average of 22 Minutes… And with the (seemingly increasing) number of evildoers that choose to do harm, We need to place “First Responders” at the sights of most concern.

Original NYT story on the theater shooting was headlined "Florida Man Is Shot to Death for Texting During Movie Preview" and included the sentences:
The killing underscored the increased debate about when to use smartphones in public. In October, the singer Madonna was spotted texting during the Lincoln Center premiere of “12 Years a Slave.” That led Tim League, chief executive of Alamo Drafthouse, a Texas-based chain of boutique cinemas, to post on Twitter that she was banned from watching movies at his theaters.

Holy shit. That sounds stressful. So you always have it in the back of your head that someone might go crazy in the public places you go to?
Reminds me of how I read somewhere that "guys" always size each other up and figure out who are "potential threats" in bars &c. I have never ever done anything like this (and yes, I'm male), and I find it really hard to believe that's a common thing. The idea just makes me laugh and think of the "ocular patdown" in Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
